A New Jersey college student, who police believe was secretly -- and illegally -- filmed in a dorm sexual encounter, indicated on Facebook that he planned to jump off a prominent New York City bridge before he took his own life, the Star-Ledger reported online.

A family lawyer confirmed Wednesday that 18-year-old Tyler Clementi killed himself by jumping from the George Washington Bridge. The attorney, Paul Mainardi, said Clementi was "a fine young man and a distinguished musician."

Clementi, a freshman at Rutgers University, changed his Facebook status to "Jumping off the gw bridge sorry" on Sept. 22, the Star-Ledger reported, though his full profile isn't public so that couldn't be independently confirmed.

A spokeswoman for the New York City Police Harbor Unit confirmed to FoxNews.com that a male body was pulled from the waters off Manhattan's northern tip on Wednesday. Police are waiting for the medical examiner to make a positive identification.

A law enforcement official says Clementi's license and Rutgers University ID were found in a wallet left on the George Washington Bridge on Sept. 22 after two witnesses saw him jump at around 8:50 p.m.

Clementi was allegedly taped by two classmates during a "sexual encounter" inside his college dorm room. Rutgers students Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei were charged last week with illegally taping another student having sex and posting the images on the Internet.

The Middlesex County, N.J., prosecutor's office charged the pair with invasion of privacy for allegedly placing a camera inside the student's dorm room.

Rutgers University President Richard L. McCormick said in a statement Wednesday that the school was "profoundly saddened" by news of Clementi's suicide.

"While I did not have the privilege of knowing this young man, I have learned that in addition to his academic abilities, he was a gifted musician," McCormick said. "Our university community feels the pain of his loss, and I know there is anger and outrage about these events."

McCormick said that the Rutgers University Police Department is investigating the alleged taping incident and said two university students -- whom he did not name -- were charged with invasion of privacy.

"If the charges are true, these actions gravely violate the university’s standards of decency and humanity," McCormick said, though he added that "the students -- like all who are accused of a crime -- must be presumed innocent until proven guilty."

Ravi, of Plainsboro, N.J., was released on $25,000 bail Tuesday. Wei, of Princeton, N.J., was released on her own recognizance Monday.

Middlesex County prosecutor Bruce Kaplan told the Star-Ledger that the two used the camera to view and transmit a live image of the student on Sept. 19. Ravi is charged with two additional counts of invasion of privacy for allegedly trying to transmit another encounter involving the same student on Sept. 21, according to the newspaper.

The New York Daily News reports that the alleged tape -- streamed live over the Internet -- showed Clementi engaged in a sexual encounter with another man.

Ravi's now defunct Twitter feed reportedly contained messages about his use of iChat, a messaging service that allows for the live-streaming of video.

He reportedly posted on his Twitter account on Sept. 19: "Roommate asked for the room till midnight."

"I went into molly's room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay," Ravi wrote, according to the Star-Ledger.

"Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 to 12. Yes it's happening again," he reportedly tweeted again on Sept. 22.

An investigation reportedly began after someone alerted the campus police that the camera had been placed in the student's dorm room without permission. The tip then led to the arrest of Wei and Ravi.

Clementi, a gifted violinist who received a scholarship from the Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra, was described by his fellow musicians as "kind" and "sensitive."

"Tyler was an absolute wonderful person," Donna Dixon, the orchestra's personnel manager, said in an interview with FoxNews.com.

"We couldn’t have had a better person," she said. "He was the model player."

As of Thursday morning, nearly 15,000 people had joined a Facebook group created in honor of Clementi -- with members expressing outrage over the alleged secret taping believed to have led to his suicide.

"The sad, tragic, horrible acts that occurred in the final days of this poor boy's life are inhumane," one member posted on the site.

"That a young man ... (with) such musical gifts should be driven senselessly to suicide is ...unconscionable," wrote another.

Steven Goldstein, chairman of Garden State Equality, said in a statement that his group considers Clementi's death a hate crime.

"We are heartbroken over the tragic loss of a young man who, by all accounts, was brilliant, talented and kind," Goldstein said. "And we are sickened that anyone in our society, such as the students allegedly responsible for making the surreptitious video, might consider destroying others' lives as a sport."

sad situation indeed. the person who taped this should punished a little harder then a 4th degree misdemeanor.

While I am not a fan of what he was doing, it should not have been broadcast live or not live on the internet. Now as far as the people who posted the stuff on the internet, I don't know if they should be charged with his death or not. but guess what folks, they have been charged.

Jason those 2 are in big trouble, and because of all the national media attention, and the recent rash of gay suicides across America, they are pulling out all the stops on these 2.

I have mixed feelings about this. I feel for the kid, but he shouldn't have killed himself. he should have sued the heck out of those who taped him though.

I can understand why he did it though. Its possible he didn't want his family to know, and since it hit the internet it was only a matter of time before someone he knew saw it some where.

For those who don't know what its like, imagine having a secret that would make people hate you, really hate you. Then it gets out without you wanting it to and now everyone knows. Your family knows, your friends know, your teachers know, your work knows. Take a guess how depressing and lonely that is.

Sad situation on multiple levels....

I don't think anyone can be completely hated...God loves us all. I pray for his family....word got out anyways

He could've privately hashed it out with his parents....now the whole world knows

Tyler Clementi Turned To A Gay Message Forum For Help Before His Suicide

By KASHMIR HILL

Post on JustUsBoys.com

It’s a tragic technological story heard round the world — a college freshman’s Webcam spying leading to a suicidal jump from the George Washington Bridge. Dharun Ravi, a freshman at Rutgers University, used his Macbook to stream video of his gay roommate having “a sexual encounter†in their room on September 19. The roommate, Tyler Clementi, did not know that he was being watched or taped. Sadly, he apparently did not notice the green light on Ravi’s laptop camera turn on when Ravi activated it from another computer in friend Molly Wei’s room across the hall.

Ravi invited other friends to watch the stream on iChat, and planned a second viewing on September 21st when Clementi again indicated he’d like the room to himself for a few hours, tweeting that day, “Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it’s happening again.†It appears from a gay message forum that Clementi was already on to his roommate by that time.

The New Jersey police have charged Ravi (and Wei) with criminal invasion of privacy, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison according to the New York Times, and a possible $30,000 fine according to the New Jersey criminal code. As my colleague Andy Greenberg points out, some of the same technologies that facilitated Ravi’s invasion of Clementi’s privacy will now help prove his guilt in the case — Ravi’s Twitter feed. Ravi deleted it, but police can get it from Twitter, or Google cache, or one of the Twitter tracking sites like Topsy. As I’ve said before, deletion on the Internet is futile.

Clementi also has a digital trail on the Internet, and it appears that he knew his roommate had filmed him after the first September 19th incident.

A month-old tweet from Ravi indicates he discovered his roommate’s sexuality based on comments Clementi made on a gay message forum. Ravi tweeted on August 22, “Found out my roommate is gay,†and linked to a post he said was Clementi’s on JustUsBoys. It’s the same forum that Clementi appears to have turned to after discovering he’d been spied on. As Gawker noted, a user on the forum by the name of “cit2mo†posted a thread “college roommate spying…..†on September 21 at 7:22 a.m.

so the other night i had a guy over. I had talked to my roommate that afternoon and he had said it would be fine w/him. I checked his twitter today. he tweeted that I was using the room (which is obnoxious enough), AND that he went into somebody else’s room and remotely turned on his webcam and saw me making out with a guy. given the angle of the webcam I can be confident that that was all he could have seen.

so my question is what next?

I could just be more careful next time…make sure to turn the cam away…
buttt…
I’m kinda pissed at him (rightfully so I think, no?)
and idk…if I could…it would be nice to get him in trouble
but idk if I have enough to get him in trouble, i mean…he never saw anything pornographic…he never recorded anything…
I feel like the only thing the school might do is find me another roommate, probably with me moving out…and i’d probably just end up with somebody worse than him….I mean aside from being an asshole from time to time, he’s a pretty decent roommate…

the other thing is I that don’t wanna report him and then end up with nothing happening except him getting pissed at me….

Other users advised him to report it to the school and make sure his roommate’s computer was closed during future encounters. Cit2mo replied:

I feel like it was “look at what a fag my roommate is†–other people have commented on his profile with things like “how did you manage to go back in there?†“are you ok?â€

and the fact that the people he was with saw my making out with a guy as the scandal whereas i mean come on…he was SPYING ON ME….do they see nothing wrong with this?

unsettling to say the least….

so I decided to fill out the room change request form….its not guaranteed that you get a change…and i don’t have to switch if I change my mind or work things out over the next week (they won’t start filling requests until next week)…but I figure I might as well as see what they can offer me….

More users advised him of the illegality of this video voyeurism. A famous case of this, of course, is that of Erin Andrews. The man who made peephole videos of her undressing was ultimately sentenced to 30 months in prison. Cit2mo responds:

oh yah, on the school website it says recording people where there is an expectation of privacy (bathroom bedroom etc) without the consent of everyone involved could….COULD…..result in being expelled

the only things is…there are too many ‘could’s ….the fact that he didn’t ACTUALLY record me (to my knowledge) and the fact that the school really prolly won’t do much of anything….

but anyway, i’ll be talking to my RA later today for sure…..

and yah, revenge never ends well for me, as much as I would love to pour pink paint all over his stuff…..that would just let him win…..

Cit2mo did end up going to the RA after Ravi’s tweet on September 21st:

so I wanted to have the guy over again.

I texted roomie around 7 asking for the room later tonight and he said it was fine.

when I got back to the room I instantly noticed he had turned the webcam toward my bed. And he had posted online again….saying….â€anyone want a free show just video chat me tonightâ€â€¦or something similar to that….

soooo after that…..

I ran to the nearest RA and set this thing in motion…..
we’ll see what happens……

I haven’t even seen my roommate since sunday when i was asking for the room the first time…and him doing it again just set me off….so talking to him just didn’t seem like an option….

meanwhile I turned off and unplugged his computer, went crazy looking for other hidden cams….and then had a great time.

Cit2mo’s last posting to the site on the morning of September 22nd indicates that he emailed an RA a paragraph about what had happened. Though he seemed calm and collected in his postings to JustUsBoys, that night, he posted “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry†to his Facebook, and committed suicide.

These digital trails may answer questions that could not be answered otherwise. A big question now is why Clementi’s resident advisor did not get Clementi moved out of that room immediately.

In addition to the criminal charges arising from this, there will be civil lawsuits. Rutgers University may find itself the target of a civil lawsuit. And Clementi’s family and perhaps Clementi’s unnamed romantic partner of September 19 will surely sue Ravi, and perhaps Wei, for invasion of privacy. In a similar case in Kansas, a man was ordered to pay $55,000 after distributing naked photos of his ex-girlfriend via email. The claims were invasion of privacy and infliction of severe emotional distress.

Another case that comes to mind involving Webcam spying and schools is the famous case out of Philadelphia, where a high school handed out laptops and then activated cameras remotely without informing the students using them. In that case, proseutors dropped the criminal charges, finding no criminal intent in the “spying.†Ravi will not likely be so lucky.

So the kid dared people to record him?

I don't know Oates, he did find out that he was being shot before his last encounter with that guy. He even said in the article that he was going crazy looking for another cam, so you might be right.
