Need help with outline for paper on SIN

Caroline H

I'm about to start a 12-15 page paper on Sin for my Theology class, but I'm having trouble with subtopics. This is the 4th paper in about 2 and 1/2 weeks...and honestly my brain is fried. It is due Thursday, but I have a final on Thursday as well so I need to get this done ASAP so I can study. Can someone help by throwing topics/ideas out there for me to think about? So far I have:

Origin of Sin

Nature of Sin

Consequences of Sin

I can flesh those out but I think I really need a bit more to cover, any suggestions are MOST WELCOME :nod

*Edited to say 12-15 pages

*Sigh* :thud:

Take the 7 deadly sins and relate them to society and social interaction. This whay you can devote each page to a sin and have you first and last page as you opener and closer. While also adressing the origins and Solution. :)

This is similar to how I did my philosophy paper on the existance of good and evil. ;)

Thanks for your suggestion Lance :) The idea of the seven deadly sins, however, is more philosophical or ethical in nature than theological. I'm looking for something that has theological implications on how we, as sinners, relate to God... :chin

How about taking the broad category of the consequences of sin and dividing it up into several different types of consequences (e.g. physical, mental, spiritual ramifications as well as how sin affects those around us)?

this is almost bad as the defending the fact the bible endorsed slavery thread where i failed miserlaby. i could get involved but not today sorry.

Thanks JoJo, I do intend to do that, as I have to drag it on for several pages. :yes Do you know of any more topics to cover?

How about you talk about the physical manifestations of sin, as hinted at in the Bible.

The serpant, Satan/Lucifer, That fall, Leprosey, Cleanlyness, The king of Babylon, The pleagues of Egypt, etc.

Using them to spring board the manifestation with sin's true purpose. :yes

Sin's true purpose? :confused

That is a good idea though about the symbols for sin in the Bible such as leprosy... It wasn't sin or a result of sin, but it was a symbol of sin and there is a difference :thumb

you may use my testimony or yours to show the destructiveness of it in lives, the subtility of it and how the media encourages it. if you want to use mine i will pm you the short or long version, not that i'm all that, but the lies that i believed set me up for failure, ie humanism, the idea that all religions are equally true. that we are able to use ki. and so on and so forth.

No, I'm clean out of ideas. I wish I could think of something! I feel for you. ;)

Caro,

Augsburg Fortress, the publishing house that the Evangelical Lutheran Church uses, put out a new Lutheran Study Bible this year. In the study notes for 1 Timothy 2:9-15, it is stated that "this is a contradiction of Romans 5:12-14 which says that it was through Adam that sin entered the world". (I'm quoting from memory, but I definitely remember that it flat out stated that there was a "contradiction" between the Bibles. :nono )

Since the supposedly learned folks at Augsburg seem to have difficulty in differentiating between Eve's being deceived and Adam sinning, perhaps when you discuss sin's origins you can clarify the distinction between the two passages and the impact both the deception and the sin has on gender roles within the church.

What you've got sounds pretty good already, Caroline. I hope you can flesh them out to 15 pages.

It might already be covered in the current sections, but what about things that in themselves are not sinful but can be symbols of sin becasue of our motives or the situation? Like for instance anger.

Thanks Jason :) Although I will be discussing the effects and consequences of sin, I'm going to stay away from personal testimonies for this paper, as this is to be more of an academic study than a personal one

Great idea Dora, that would be a great trail to follow. If you've ever done a little word study on the Hebrew word for "desire" used in Genesis 3, you know that it really sheds great light on the effect of sin on gender roles within marriage..and consequentially in the church :yes

And thanks Nick, I intend on covering that also in the Nature of Sin section. :thumb

I appreciate all your suggestions! :pray Feel free to keep 'em coming if you think of more :)
