I lived in Buffalo for many years. Every visitor we ever had wanted to experience Niagara Falls.
This is what the American side looked like in 1969 when the water was temporarily diverted so debris could be cleared from the river upstream from the falls.
My mother had a very dear friend. She was from Buffalo,NY.She always talked about the falls and going over to Canada.
I thought I remembered her talking about taking a boat or ferry to Canada. This would have been around the 30's.The border goes right through the Falls...
Oh, well you probably remember 641 Delaware Avenue, then: the Ansley Wilcox Mansion, where TR Roosevelt was inaugurated. It's now a National Historic Site.We lived first in the center of Buffalo, and the last few years in Kenmore. We left the area in 1978.

Blessings.

Yes, I remember. I also remember the Allen Street area art festival. Don't know if they still have that. Also the Buffalo Philharmonic playing in Kleinhan's music hall, and the Albright-Knox art gallery. My wife and I loved the Buffalo area, we even made the trip over to Toronto a few times a year. There were some good cheese vendors at an open air market there in the Portuguese part of town I liked to visit. I still go back to Buffalo once in awhile to wander around, or to take the kids to a football game, when they were younger. I first lived in Buffalo in 1964 when I started at the University.

You also have to pay to cross the Peace Bridge, the Rainbow Bridge and the Lewiston Bridge. There was a ferry that ran between Buffalo and Crystal Beach Amusement Park on the Canadian side. I think that stopped running in the 50s.
Grand Island, NY has two State Parks; nearby Navy Island, which is Canadian, is where William Mackenzie took refuge in 1837 during his failed rebellion.I grew up north of Niagara Falls not far from lake Ontario. Been to the falls many times, although if I am visiting any more, I much prefer the Canadian side. I can also remember as kids our parents taking us to the amusement park that used to be on Grand Island just above the falls.
