Nickelodeon gone wild??

I heard about this on the radio news yesterday, and was shocked. Then, when I found out that it aired at 8:00 PM I figured it was simply geared towards adults, like Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" block. But apparently this new cartoon, with extreme adult content, is being promoted as a family program, and there are a lot of parents upset about it. Read the article below, and if you feel like it, the one in the second link, and share your thoughts.

NickelodeonThe Parents Television Council (PTC) is sounding a warning about a cartoon on the children's network, Nickelodeon.

Glenn Martin DDS follows the adventures of a traveling dentist and his family. The new show airs during primetime, and its content has Melissa Henson, PTC's director of public education, crying foul.

Melissa Henson PTC"[In] the first few episodes that aired, there were references to pornography," she explains. "There's a running joke about the family pet, which is a dog. More recently, an episode featured the main character, Glenn Martin, performing in a male strip club trying to earn money to work off gambling debt."

Henson believes the show marks a new direction for the network.

"It's the first time that they've developed an original programming to air in that time, but it's also...being promoted...as a family program -- something that parents can sit down and watch with their kids," she adds. "But when you take a closer look at the content, it is not something I think that most parents would feel at all comfortable allowing their children to watch."

The PTC spokeswoman encourages concerned parents to contact Nickelodeon about the program.

And then there's this article about the same cartoon character, who is 13 years old, having a sexual relationship with his girlfriend's mom.

I’ve seen the show and can definitely say it isn’t kid friendly in any sense of the word. But that's just...wow. It actually reminds me more of a Family Guy type show, rather than a children’s cartoon.
But sad to say, Nickelodeon has been decreasing in child friendly (or any decent) shows for that matter. Just look at Degrassi on Teen Nick to see that. :bigfrown

a thirteen yr old having a relationship with his girlfriends mom, isnt that promoting statutory rape? :mad
that's entertaiment?

Yes. And it seems a lot of illegal and immoral things today are becoming entertaining. Stuff like this is seen as hilarious in my school. I honestly don't know how parents let their children watch things like this, regardless of whether or not the kid is five or fifteen. It's just wrong. :bigfrown

Exactly. I had a math teacher who could barely be considered Christian and was horrified by what kids were learning from these shows and how they were applying it to reality. It’s terrible. I honestly fear for my generation and the ones which follow.

yes, we are indeed heading toward the return of christ. It was also said of gen x. now we say it of the millenial and gen y.

Yeah it is a very vulger show, in my opinion.

Its really not even funny either, the jokes are not funny. Its overall a very lame show. I really hope they stop airing it/

soon it will so bad that we have to stop watching tv and movies because no show will have a sense of common decency.

It's already that bad. Take an inventory of prime-time network TV and then try to find the shows that promote common decency and moral behavior. They are almost non-existent. One of the biggest problems is that parents routinely settle their kids in front of the TV, using that as a babysitter, without having any idea what the kids are watching.

If the TV viewers would take a stand, refusing to pay cable bills for unfit programming, and then refusing to purchase the products of the sponsors, and sending them letters to let them know why, things could change. We have sat back for years basically said nothing, and the TV programming has turned into smut.

We recently had our cable turned off. We got very tired of the trashy TV shows, not to mention the high cost. We now have more Bible study time, and we talk more, too!

God Bless.

:yes :thumb My husband and I don't have cable. At first it was because we couldn't afford it as a non-essential, but I don't think we'll ever subscribe to cable or dish again because it's not worth it for the money you pay to be bombarded with things that either insult Christ or promote immorality. There are a few good channels left that show good shows a lot of the time, like educational things. But honestly, if I really want to see those I'd rather rent or buy the DVD than give a company my money who could care less if I'm satisfied with their programming.

When I read the articles above I thought they sounded like Family Guy as well :gah But Family Guy has always been marketed to an older audience, if I'm not mistaken. This is something new to me, that they would specifically target a family audience with sickening trash like that. It's not just sexual content (which would be bad enough), it's perverted child abuse sexual content! Honestly, if we send teachers to prison for having sex with their 13 year old students, how on earth can they think it would be fine and dandy to have their cartoon character involved in a sexual tryst with his girlfriend's mother?? And they present it in a way that shows that he wants it and enjoys it! I would not want my son watching that... How dare they! :grumpy

My family and I also went without cable for many moths (due to lack of affordability), and I hated not having television. But now that we have it, I hardly watch it anyway. Television just isn't as entertaining to me as it used to be. Plus, as you said, most channels aren't very Christian. Even some of the Christian networks aren't worth watching half of the time. I've found that only a few of the people telepreaching even know enough about what they are talking about to be worth watching.

You are so right. When we had our cable turned off, we discovered that the main function of the TV for us was to have some noise in the house. Now we're enjoying music more, and we're even conversing more. There are some things I miss, like HGTV and the Discovery channels, but it's no big deal.

Take care and God Bless.

We havn't had cable or Satellite tv for years and we don't miss it. When we want to watch something we go to itunes or to the networks site. Kinda funny since I was an installer for DirecTv after we decided to not have tv. It's interesting that when you don't have it and then you go someplace that does you are shocked by all the explicit content, especially the commercials.

Wow. Sounds like garbage. Thanks for the warning. I have been curbing my son's viewing of that channel to OnDemand episodes of shows like Spongebob, especially after they started frequently airing the "it's not okay to say that's so gay" PSAs. My seven year old kept asking me what "gay" was. :bigfrown
