Here on the forum we've had many discussions as to whether or not Christians should smoke, drink, smoke pot, and do other things that harm the body, the temple of the Spirit.

Now we can add Tanning to the list.

A new analysis of about 20 studies concludes the risk of skin cancer jumps by 75% when people start using tanning beds before age 30. Experts also found that all types of ultraviolet radiation caused worrying mutations in mice, proof the radiation is carcinogenic. Previously, only one type of ultraviolet radiation was thought to be lethal.

The new classification means tanning beds and other sources of ultraviolet radiation are definite causes of cancer, alongside tobacco, the hepatitis B virus and chimney sweeping, among others.

LONDON (AP)  Melanoma, the deadliest kind of skin cancer, is now the most common cancer in young British women, the country's leading cancer organization said Wednesday. Skin cancer has overtaken cervical cancer as the top cancer striking women in their 20s, according to the latest data from Cancer Research United Kingdom.

The trend is particularly worrying since younger people are not generally those most susceptible to melanoma. Rates of skin cancer are typically highest in people over age 75.

Not saying that Christians should or shouldn't tan. That's between you and the Lord. Just saying to be aware of the risks to His temple.

Steve's uncle died of melanoma. It's a nasty, nasty way to go. :(

This risk has been known for decades, and people still tan, take a look at the actor George Hamilton, that dude keeps a tan, you don't ever see him with out one.

being alive runs the risk of dying, darned if you do darned if you don't. think about this a marathon runner after completion of the run has 4% chance of cardiac arrest albeit it mild. Boxing, mma, and other contact sports have occasional concusions which cause drain bamage, see i'm ok :crazy

seriously what in life doesnt have risks, weigh them and pray and decide for yourself, as soon breathing will be risky and other things

Personally, I've never seen the point in tanning beds. If you can go outside for free why wast your money? And really, if I don't get a tan it doesn't matter, my husband still thinks I'm pretty and that's all that matters, not what anyone else thinks. It is dangerous however, but calling it a sin might be a stretch. :chin

true i dont because i burn easily and fall into that category of high risk for melanoma, my wife tanned as a kid and had those fatty deposits removed(skin damage) by a dermotologist and was told they came to be because of her getting sunburn years ago.

True, being alive is a major contributing factor to death so why worry about it. Things can be taken too far. I am very dark. Partly because I have some Cherokee blood as well as having worked outside for many years. I seriously don't worry about cancer and stuff. God handles all my appointments. Even death.

I'm naturally tanned ;)

Thanks for the good message Handy.

:lol My husband was commenting on his tan just the other day and my son snorted and said, "You call that a tan?" Then he held out his arm and said, "Now that's a tan!"

However, our family doctor was informing my son and I just last month that even though he is black, he is just as prone to skin cancers and needs tanning lotion just as much as I do. I was surprised by that, because all the black relatives have told me not to worry about it. But, the doctor was very insistent that he always wear sunblock when outside.
