Are there any nurses out there? What did you think of the training to be a nurse and how do you like it?

nurses in Florida are being layed off by some hospitals. You dont have much of a life as a nurse, long hours.

Nurses are being layed off?!?! What in the world! What about the nursing shortage? What about all the 3rd world nurses being brought in by America because there aren`t enough American nurses? I saw a documentary that California is desparately needing nurses. I know in the South, hospitals will pay you to go to nursing school if you will work for them and then you can basically set your own days and choose the department you want to work in, and you can do that with a 2 year degree. I know a lot of people who have done this and get paid very well. Of course, the negative side is it can be a stressful job and you are exposed to germs all the time, but it seems to me like nurses build up an immunity to the germs like teachers often build up an immunity to the germs of snotty nosed kids. If I had the stomach for poking veins I might consider going into nursing myself but I just don`t have a stomach for that. I could deal with surgery or give shots but drawing blood would make me pass out. I think a nurse must have a stomach strong as steel but a gentle, kind heart (although I`ve met nurses that are not gentle or kind at all but I still think they should be.)
One other thing I think one has to consider with nursing is with the Obama health care plan medical staff may be forced to give medical care that goes against their religion or morals. I think one can still be a nurse but they would have to a avoid working in a department where they would be put in that situation.
As for the hours, I have a friend who works long hours but just 2 weeks out of a month. She works one week on and one week off but she is paid very well. I think it is better to work long hours with good pay than long hours with bad pay!!! Or having to work 2 jobs to make ends meet. But ultimately I think you have to pick a job that you will enjoy. If you don`t like taking care of sick and often grumpy people, then you should stay out of nursing because I think patients need someone that cares and is sympathetic with them.

people are putting offthose non lifethreating treatments as long as possible, Florida is a retiree state and those on social security are being hit hard by the economy.

So are you saying the demand of nursing care is going down in geriatric states because people don`t have the money to pay for medical care? But what about other states? And why do you think America is bringing in 3rd world nurses who can barely speak English? I live in Japan and Japan has started bringing in 3 world nurses too who don`t speak a single word of Japanese. It is VERY strange to me. I mean these nurses must be retrained to work on 1st world nursing standards and they must be trained in the language and culture. It seems like it would be much easier for Japan to pay Japanese citizens and America to pay American citizens to be nurses rather than the government bypassing citizens to get others who don`t speak the language well to do the job. Isn`t that odd to you? How do you explain it? Are you a nurse?

no. i'm no nurse i friends in the medical field and i ask them about how the economy has hurt them and they told me that, a good nurse can still find another job if they look hard enough, some of the shortage maybe due to the reduction of the taxes from property(amendment one). that aslo has effected the school system and other goverment jobs'

jason

But presently the medical field is under private not government care so property taxes wouldn`t affect nurses like it would teachers and government employees.

no if the hospital is a public funded(public hospital) google this hospital in my home county of indian river county,fl indian river county memorial hospital it's a disctrict that is partially funded by taxes and non profit and the board is elected by the voters of my county.
these are the hospital that are doing the layoffs and how do you think those without the money (insurance) get treated?
jason

You`re right. Tax payers are footing that bill! Anyway, this is very interesting because all I hear are about shortages not the layoffs. I heard colleges did the same thing to teachers, they talked about teaching shortages but when the teachers graduated, there were not enough jobs to acommodate the graduates. But this information about nursing shortages isn`t coming from colleges needing students. This is coming from the media. I wonder why? Perhaps there are shortages but not enough money to pay the nurses so they make up for it by hiring cheaper labor from 3rd world countries?

Anyway, Kimberly, since neither Jason nor myself are nurses, maybe you should search the web for a Christian nurses forum or a general nurses forum to read and ask questions from nurses about what to expect in school and on the job. To ask how open the job market really is, etc. I think a nursing forum should answer all your questions and more.
