well, i use windows98 se, with IE uninstalled (yes it can, and must be done :P )

but i would say that my faviouite os for anything would have to be beos. it has the perfect GUI *drool* and it just works... :P

I use Macs for two fields, audio recording and video recording. I have never built a P-4 with XP or otherwise capable of my fairly old G-4. Windows based aplications do have their place though. Auto CAD and CAD Key are tremendous drafting packages that I have not found an equal for in Mac.

Im currently using Desktop/Lx which is a linux distro been using it for about 3 years now as my main os

My other system went down... Was running a PC with Mandrake and Wine. And they say Linux doesn't crash :-? :-D (Must have been the pc hardware huh?)
Looking to replace the system with a Sun box though... (If I can get it cheap enough. Full raid 5 with scsii 2's)

Home... 2000 Pro...Firefox Browser...Zone Alarm Pro firewall

Work...2000 Advanced Server...Firefox...Cisco PIX router/firewall.

Both PC's buttoned down so tight nothing gets in or out without me knowing it.

Both PC's also run 24/7. Rarely do I have to reboot.

Mandrake puts out a pretty decent firewall. Their SNF (Single Network Firewall) is pretty good (and free), but they have since upgraded to their MNF (Multi x x). I liked the SNF better... If you like to play, you should check it out for your home. :D

I like playing, but I also like my comfort zone as well. Zone Alarm is doing a great job for me and in case you did know, they were bought out by Checkpoint, the makers of Firewall 1.

Hmm, No, I didn't know that Checkpoint bought Zone Alarm. Zone Alarm is a great personal firewall, except most people don't know how to use it and they end up allowing malicious traffic flow through it because they can't decipher good traffic from bad. :-?

I take it you had to play with VPN configurations with your PIX? My, wasn't that fun... :-D

If your somewhat comfortable with the PIX, Mandrakes SNF or MNF (I like SNF Better) would be a breeze and is very intuative once you get past the initial setup... You should check it out :D

I'm down to two decent desktops and my laptop and I never have time at home to "Play" anymore. Have you gotten Wine to work? (Online documentation sucks)
I'd love to go purely Red Hat or Mandrake (If Mandrake would support Raid 0) on one of my machines again, but the wife depends on too many of her windoz apps and duel booting is a pain. I've gotten some of them to work, but not all...

Yeah, I'm a single tech alright, but I still can't afford those $400.00+ vid cards. I'm blessed to be working in a shop that receives alot of donated equipment from Intel, Sandia Lab's, DoD, Air Force Research Lab's etc...., as they upgrade.

Have you gotten Wine to work?

I've never been compelled to run it. Debian's [apt-cache search ?????] and [apt-get install ????] has gotten me any GNU app that I require. I see it as Win32 app's being for Windows. FreeBSD & OpenBSD's packages are fairly diverse, with the later being the slimest in regards to choises. If all else fails and I just gotta have a app that isn't in either's package repository there's always source/compile.

Deb's native SCSI support is quite nice off of the netmini.iso. Give it a whirl sometime. I had no problems with it setting up a RAID0, RAID1, RAID7 config on a system of 12 - 18g 80 pin drives using a dual channel DAC960.

All of it has floated into our shop for scraping/recycle.......then found it's way to my house to play with.

I've got a sun SparcStation5's, but I don't have the monitor... Currently I'm waiting to see if I can get some of our off lease HP 9000's 8-)
Can you run Mandrake on the SparcStation5's? Or Red Hat on the HP9000's?
