18...I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval. (1 Cor. 11: NIV1984)

How do divisions in the church show who has God's approval?

In those days various ideas and practices would come up and since the Canon was incomplete they would eventually be tested agaisnt the available Scriptures and in some cases brought to the attention of the Apostles themselves.
What was reality for Pete and Paul was repeated on down the line.

I wonder if the testing is not more a matter of character than it is of doctrine.

IOW, we know on whom God's pleasure rests by how they conduct themselves in a disagreement, not by simply what they say they know.

Those who stray from the teachings of Jesus, found in the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John do not have the Lord’s approval.

Jesus Christ will always be my Lord, and my ONLY Lord.

Good for you Eli, then you should be especially concerned that folks consider the whole counsel of Scripture.

Great!

Judging by the posts being made, am I to understand this as a veiled suggestion that Paul's teachings are somehow not consistent with Jesus'?

I hope there is some way of answering that without violating the TOS.

ok, so if these commands from paul arent christlike?

so you can be that holy that you wont sin.

good luck being under the torah law.paul spoke of that we have a high priest and that we arent going to be holy, on that we should strive for that more christlike estate.

christ died because no man could ever be that perfect priest and do the priestly estate of ministry for isreal. and isreal was to be the means to which the entire earth was to be reconciled.

No.

I am a follower of a man named Jesus Christ. His life and teachings are documented in the four Gospels—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

mathew 23.

1Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples,

2Saying The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: 3All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.

hmm lets see, today is the seventh day of chanukah. i do hope you went to the temple or have a menorah to light.

or follow the shabat which is coming up.

and if not why not. jesus just commanded you to obey the jews.

Yes, Jesus commanded us to repent of our sin.

Yes, we have all sinned, but the Lord has commanded us to stop sinning.

These scribes and Pharisees have not commanded you and me to do anything. They died many centuries ago. They haven't spoken to either of us.

well no one is perfect neither indeed can be.

that is the point.we cant be that holy, we will die with some sin and by grace we will make it.

write down a list of daily sins and see how unholy you are and then look to cross.

gods ways doesnt mean we do anything, we repent and yes we have commands but that doesnt mean legalism which you espouse.

quit lying to god and tell him that you love him enough , you and i and no one will ever be able to love him back.

we will fail him, we will sin.

thats a fact. we cant be perfect. we must when we do realise that we sin repent.

its grace not works that gets you in.

No, Jesus told us we must be perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect (Matt 5:48).
