Growth PAST HISTORY

How we understand “Grace” will determine how affected we allow ourselves to be concerning our “old man.” One may believe that the grace of salvation may be temporary, while another’s belief is that it is permanent. Of these two belief’s concerning Grace, whichever is chosen that is not of the truth will significantly affect the conformity of one’s spiritual growth, but not one’s retention of salvation; and there is no greater matter of significance in Scriptural doctrine relating to spiritual growth than that which concerns eternal security.

This brings 1Corintians 12:7-10 to my mind as we should never rely on the old man, but let grace have it's perfect patience within the new man.

2Co 12:7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
2Co 12:8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
2Co 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
2Co 12:10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

Yes, until we see the crux of Romans 7 ("no good in me"--Adamic nature--old man) it is usually an attempt at the old man restoration project!

Php 3:12-16 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. (13) Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, (14) I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (15) Let those of us who are mature think this way, and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal that also to you. (16) Only let us hold true to what we have attained.
