Peace4all, Calling All Peacemakers

Peace4all, check this mp3 out and let me know what you think would ya? BTW, you’ll probably want to fast forward the announcements and get right into the discussion.

I hope that everyone will at least check this track out, but the several times that I’ve listened to it, I couldn’t get peace4all out of my head.

One of the points that the speaker makes is this. (I can’t remember if it was millions or billions) but it would only take like 12 whatever dollars per year to solve world hunger etc. Americans spent 9 whatever dollars on Black Friday…

Aside from the link, I believe that America has been blessed by God, so that we can bless those around us. That being said, the speaker says that for the first time in world history, America has the means to make history and I say, “If we only had our priorities straightâ€Â.

The file is only like 6 meg. Click on the link that says

Calling all Peacemakers II: The questions of a kingdom
Rob Bell
http://www.mhbcmi.org/listen/

I haven’t heard Part 3 yet (Dec 17) but I plan to tonight on my drive home. (it’s easy to burn the mps right from media player)

oo dling now (will be really slow cuz I have abotu 30 torrents running)

btw, I have been t one.org a few times and was on a mailing list :)

26 BILLION bottles of water.

Cool. I've never heard of http://one.com Checking it out now :D

Like I said, just fast forward through the announcements. I think you'll really like it

It's funny, I've got a friend that attends there and he said that last week there was a bit of a fuss (negative feedback) on what was said. For the life of me, I don't really understand what the fuss was about or who could have gotten offended by what was said. I dunno, maybe you or sombody else can tell me as I'm obviously in the dark on how anyone could be offended.. Go figure huh?

Well, gotta run (first real lunch all week) and I'm gonna try and do some shopping too ;-)

Ohh, I feel like an idiot today  (can I please go home) :-D

Rob Bell knew Todd Beamer and his wife from college (known from 911 with his words, "Let's Roll!!" and he speaks about them both in the clip. I thoght that was pretty cool

one.org it's ok :-P lol.

I listened to a part of it so far, I am pretty busy though ATM and people keep calling so I keep having to pause it! lol.

the only reason anyone ever would get mad at it, is the commentary about how other people might not perceive "democracy" as anything but American Greed. and when you look at it rationally, that seems to be what is going on.

some people are just too thick :-P

I guess that makes sence (the greed part). I just assumed that all Christians knew that we were greedy people by nature 8-) so why should it offend a christian to hear that america is a greedy nation in the eyes of the rest of the wold? Maybe your right.. We're all a bit thick huh?

Don't forget pride. And I'm not talking about a form of patriotism either. I'm talking about ego.

Yeah, I can see pride since he does bring up the flag at the end. But the way he lays the whole thing out, it's hard to see anyone misunderstanding his words.
I dunno. I've listened to it like three times already and I just can't see how anyone could have anything against it. Did you listen to it yet?

ohh ya, I am thick in a few areas. Definitely in dealing with relationships. I keep not trusting my gut, and it keeps hurting me more. I don't believe myself when I think that someone is going to cheat on me, or lie to me.. I put too much trust in other people :-/

ehhh....
Don't be afraid to get hurt once in awhile Peace4All. I figure it's worth a little pain once in awhile for the great things I find in the people that surround me. It's all a balance.

Let me know what you thought of the soundtrack. If you liked that one, maybe you'd like the first one (though I think Quath would get more milage out of it :-D )

Take care and Merry Christmas.

Jeff

Well, I see 78 hits on this thread so far but only a couple replies.

Did anyone listen to this? If so, what are your thoughts?

Thanks,
Jeff

I can't listen to it fromwork, so that is why I haven't commented on it so far. I did see an article that shows that Americans donate less to charity (per GDP) than most other countries. The article even showed that for $300, you could save a life. It even gave the phone number or address to send the money.

Son in a sense, if you buy a new TV for $300, you are saying that you watching that TV is worth a human life. (That presents a tough moral problem.) However, is it worth giving all your money away to save lives so you are barely out of poverty?

I think one big problem is that we instinctually help those near us more than those far away. Say a neighbor collapsed. The ambulance arrives and says that due to financial contraints, they hospitalize this guy unless they get $300 (and he will die unless he is hospitalized). I think most of us would try to scrounge up $300 to save him. However, if he is in the 3rd world, we don't feel the need.

So I think we should and can do more. I think it will have more of an impact if it were everyone instead of just a few. So I would rather money went to solve world problems than for some of the things we currently spend money on.

Hey Quath.
Can you download it and burn it to CD for your drive to work?

Anyway, I believe Rob Bell mentions a statistic that Americans spends more money on trash bags per year than it would take to solve world hunger.

I am just still in awe how he put this whole thing together. It really puts ones life in perspective. He also does a thing called nooma ( http://nooma.com ) and he put one out called "Rich" on the theme of God Bless America. Wow is all I can say.

You know, it takes a lot for something to really "Wow" me. This really 'Wow'ed' me...

ya, I heard the trashbags part.

If we see it, we are much more likely to help it. We are a very audio visual kind of people. If we don't see it happening, we don't really care.

Thats why we don't care much about global warming or pollution. You don't see the negative consequences until it is too late. If there were those bloated kids walkign aroudn barefoot in the streets of america, they would have shoes and food and malaria pills in seconds!

Yeah, I agree Peace4All.

It's odd. I've always had a soft spot for the children in the 3rd world countries and I've always wanted to sponsor a child. Ironically, and to my own shame, I never did.

Last May I took a new job with an increase in pay with a lot of perks and I was trying to figure out where I could give more (not that I was really giving much if anything outside the church anyway, which is a shame on me too), but then, my 7 year old boy sees this comercial for the Christian Childrens fund and he said that he sure wished he could help those little boys. Man, talk about stabbing me in the chest... And we as Christians wonder why Jesus said that we needed to be more like the children huh?...

So anyway, I made a call and I am now the proud sponsor of Dennis. We just received our first letter from his Mother yesterday and it was fantastic. I hope that my son and her son (who is also 7) will find a friendship as the years pass and it's really neat to expose my child to the reality that other children across the globe call reality.

As a side note, Dennis and his mother and 6 brothers attend a Catholic Church. For those that know me... isn't that just ironic?

Jeff, now you know that God's never ironic. :-D

We did the sponsor a child thing too. They sent us pictures and things the little girl had made for us, I even got a pair of beaded earrings she made me.
We did it for about 8 years or so, until she became a teenager
It was pretty neat.

I don't believe massive giving will ever end world hunger, because the roots of why they are in that condition are still going to be there, be it spiritual or governmental....probably both.

I think as believers, giving is an individual call through the appointment of the Holy Spirit or what has been laid on our heart.

Sorry it's taken me so long to get back. I'm kinda on Christmas Vacation until next Tuesday :-D

Lovely,
yeah yeah lol

destiny,
Does it really matter what we think in terms of solving world hunger or what the root of it may be? I honestly believe that we are blessed by God not simply for our own comfort, but so that we can be a blessing to others. Perhaps the root cause is for us through them :-?

As believers, I get the idea that were all called as believers to give. Some people believe that once were Christians, all of our struggles are over and our faith is made simple and good deeds flow easily from our tender, loving hearts... I disagree... Sometimes we have to push ourselves to do what God would have us to do.

Anyway, I'm glad that you got the opportunity to share your life with a child that was without. I'm sure that you had a wonderful impact on her life. For me to give $25 a month is pretty simple and it does sooo much for another human being. It's like, I don't even miss the $25. How many other people are there out there that wouldn't miss the $25 but just arn't aware of the opportunity? You know what I'm saying?

Of course your perspective is as right as mine since God causes us to see things differently in a lot of areas. As the body of Christ we are all unique parts.
We can all see a different angle on solving a problem, one no less right than the other.
Yeah, it's not always easy to do the things God asks...especially when it invades my comfort zone. I've played Jonah before and ran from something I knew God was asking me to do, only to have to face the same thing again. Thank God He didn't allow me to be swallowed up by anything except regret of not doiing it sooner, because theres always a blessing in obedience.

Amen and thank you for such a well rounded response!
