Pentacostals

What's your view on the pentacostal religion?

I have a friend who was raised pentacostal and her mom is always telling me that I'm going to hell. What's up with THAT?! She believes that one must be "filled with the holy ghost" and speak in tongues. Well, I've been touched by the holy ghost and it didn't make me run around the church screaming.

Once at their church, a lady supposidly recieved the holy ghost and she was running around the church and ended up slamming her head against the pew and craking it. Had to be taken to the hospital.

I'm sorry, but that sounds like a demon...not God. Why in the world would God make you crack your head open?!

When I was about 12, I went to church with her. About the 5th time I went, I ended up getting baptised. I remember flinging around so much that I couldn't stop. I was told that I spoke in tongues. Now, don't you think I would have known if I had been filled with the holy spirit then? I still to this day wonder what happened to me that day. My parents forbid be to ever go back to that church. The people from that church would call me and tell me to LIE to my parents so I could go to church there. I never did go back. (THANK YOU MOM AND DAD!)

Why are so many people drawn to this religion? So many things about it seem evil and not right.

Every Christian sect has some people in it that believe that only their particular brand of Christianity is the "true" Christians and all others are false prophets and ravening wolves. This is just a more rampant form of fundieism than normal. If you look at it closely you will see that there are many levels of the same attitude.

1. I, and only I, have the truth, all others are false.

2. Only my denomination has the truth, all others are false.

3. Only Protestants (or Catholics etc) have the truth, all others are false.

4. Only Christians ( or Muslims, Jews, etc) have the truth, all others are false.

As you can see most Christians fit somewhere on the scale of fundieism. It's obvious that your freinds mother fits on number 2. Most of the Christians I have met fit on number 3. Most Abramics will at least fit on number 4.

I guess the question is.... where do you fit?

I believe a lot of different things. There are things in my OWN religion (Baptist) that I've been told, but I dissagree because I interpret it completly different than my preacher does.

But I'm just wondering where pentacostals get their beliefs and why they think one must speak in tongues and jump around acting all crazy.

They say they get it from the Bible.

Christians argue with each other incessantly about what the Bible says, just take a look in any Christian discussion forum. Usually the arguement takes the form of both sides shouting "the truth is in the scripture, you are not following scripture, Satan is blinding you to what scripture says, If you had any faith at all you'd know I'm right." or words to that effect.

I have to agree with you there.

ONCE AGAIN I REITERATE THAT EVEN IF THERE IS AN OBJECTIVE TRUTH IT IS UNKNOWABLE IN THE HUMAN MIND DUE TO THE MINDS EFFECT ON STRUCTURING IT HUMANLY IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND IT.

I was baptised in an apostolic pentocostal church, and spoke in tounges, all that good ole stuff, but eventually left not becuase of that tounges or the really active worship but the fact that they had certain salvation conditions I did not agree were biblical and would acuse other christians of not being saved as you said because they did not speak in tounges or were batised a certain way.

I learned that salvatin is ALL from God a gift that we neither deserve or earn, in short we have no room to brag about salvation at all, be humble and greatfull.

Wel tounges do happen, we read it in the book of acts and the apostle paul addressed the issue few times himself, simple read the letters he wrote to the churches, and you will get your answers.

The by the way applies to everything, we are men after all and we do mess things up, so to know the truth of God go to his word, and be carefull not to take your thinking with you, but let your thinking come from the word.

And a word of warning be very carefull about taking advice from anyone who is not a beleiver, they are speaking out of a worldly wisdom, that the word tells us is from below, and since they being non beleivers do not know JEsus they are not going to lead you to truth.

OH yea the christians i knew in that particular church did love JEsus and I believe are saved as are many others, and as long as JEsus is the center, and they are seking God in the word, even with som mess ups they are our brothers and sisters, love them, Love JEsus and Praise the Lord everyday that he would save a sorry bunch like us http://www.christianforums.net/images/s ... on_lol.gif

God is not the author of confusion. Things are to be done in an orderly fashion in church. And if someone speaks in tongues there is suppost to be someone there to interpret what is being said or they are to keep silent
You say that this women was filled with the Holy Spirit and ran around the church and then cracking here head open! That doesn't sound like an orderly assembly.

I Corinthians 14:22. Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.
23. Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?
24. But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is judged by all.
25. And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.
26. How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
27. If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.
28. But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God.
29. Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.
30. But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent.
31. For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged.
32. And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
33. For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.
34. Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says.
35. And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.
36. Or did the word of God come originally from you? Or was it you only that it reached?
37. If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.
38. But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.
39. Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.
40. Let all things be done decently and in order.

Oh, this church is NOT orderly...it's like watching a circus act!

People are up dancing around yelling and about 20 people will be "speaking in tongues" at a time. I never once heard anyone interpret it.

So you guys have a problem with people getting excited and dancing around and talking in tongues? :-? They are excited about Jesus!
About God not being the author of confusion, what's confusing about dancing around? If you get dizzy or something? Being excited for the Lord is a very good thing. Some people can't sit through a whole sermon without falling asleep. I knew a person like that, but he loved God so he went to a pentacostal church and since he's been excited about going to church, he thinks it's actually fun, and he said he felt the presence of God a lot more than he ever did at a "stuffy church" (his words) I also knew people who went to a place where you know they touch you and you fall down with the holy spirit in you, and they converted to Christianity as soon as they got up. Don't be so quick to write off things you don't understand (or that aren't for you) as evil.

I have to agree with Anariel here. Some many times we write things off as evil just because it's unfamiliar to us. (not wordly things but church things)

I will admit that I only have one pentacostal church to compare to. I've only ever been to one.

But I can't believe that God would let a person crack their head open in church. And for a whole bunch of people to be speaking in tongues with nobody interpreting it? That just doesn't sound right to me.

And Havoc...shush up.

Well, there's nothing wrong with it being not for you niki :D People are different. About the lady cracking her head open, God didn't let that happen, it just did. He didn't stop the crusades or anything like that either, because we have free will. I would be more inclined to be surprised he let Christians kill a whole lot of people, than he let a lady crack her head, after all I'm sure she survived it right? (I really hope so!)

I understand what you mean about tongues, maybe they're talking to God and actually getting to use words that are satisfying, because it's the spirit language. I want to say it's the Hebrew language (but I'm definitely not sure) that has like three words for love, agape and two others. One of them is romantic love, one is parent/child love, and agape is godly love. How many words for love would be in God's own language you know? Of course this is just a thought, you got me thinking about it

*gasp* Et3rnal you agree with me? *falls over* JK! Don't worry I was talking about church things

the crusades are used too often against christians, I wish some would study this thing.

1. they were first a responce to an attack on a southern kingdom by Muslems who were fully intent on taking many more kingdoms over in the north and whipping out chrisitans.

2. the first wave were regualr people some beleivers some not and got excited by the call of the pope and jumped the gun, they were not prepaired and unfourtionalty acted badlt in deperation, as would many of us if we were starving and dieng.

Not to mention that they were not really christian but rather catholic, and at the time the catholic church was keeping most members in the dark, and not very christian at all. more political.

Hello does "REFORMATION" mean anything?

3. the next wave were not christians at all but pagans the pope told that if they would fight with a red cross they would be saved, this was a lie and not christian, but the cross made it seem as they were, a complete fraud on the pope's part. Theses guys however had greater ambitions and attacked more cities they were susposed to and HELLO killed "christians" while doing it. NOt just muslems but YES christian too.

4. the last wave was a bunch of knights that the king hired to basically clean up the mess and get some controll back, they did just that.

Listen before blaiming the crusades on christians take a closer look, it is just like the so called witch burnings in salem the men doing it were not christian and the wemon who were there victoms were not witches. It was a fraude to hide sexuall crimes and affairs.

A true beleiver in JEsus does not do the things that we are often blamed for, those who do are not beleivers, they are liars who use the name of JEsus to hide behind, and by the way let us know that more christians who really beleived and stood up tp them were killed then in any other group. IE the pope had more christians who stood us to him killed then any of the witches or muslems, why do we forget that????

Anyways this is touchy for me because the abounding ignornace in there things amazes me yet if we applyed the same to other groups we are branded as wrong, IE witches eat children... do they NO, did they YES some did and they said they were witches, are they the wicca theses days say no. HMMMMMMMMMM you see what I am saying, lets take a closer look at these things and be sure that we are talking about christians and fakes before branding things as christian activity.

Anariel, this is for clarification purposes only. Tongues is not Hebrew and neither is agape. Tongues is not an earthly language at all. Without the Holy Spirit to help interpret it, it means little to us. Agape is 'unconditional love' in Greek. The Greeks have four different words for 'love', depending on context. Agape, philia, storge and eros.

See this site for definitions... http://orlapubs.com/AR/R213.html

Allright it's greek, I did say I was definitely not sure, I just knew it was an old language

Hey, it's all Greek to me.

Unless it's Hebrew :-? Or Latin :-? Or Gaelig :-? I know enough German to get my face slapped :)
