Jerome says just two greater and lesser
And? Does that mean Jerome is right? Why did you ignore my argument? Here it is again:
There are at least three named James. Jesus's family didn't believe in him and so were not among his disciples.
Mar 3:16 He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter);
Mar 3:17
James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder);
Mar 3:18 Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and
James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot,
Mar 3:19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
Mar 3:20 Then he went home, and the crowd gathered again, so that they could not even eat.
Mar 3:21
And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.” (ESV)
Again:
Mat 10:2 The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother;
James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;
Mat 10:3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector;
James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
Mat 10:4 Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. (ESV)
Mat 12:46 While he was still speaking to the people, behold,
his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. (ESV)
So, we can clearly see that his family did not believe in him as they did not follow him. Therefore, none of the disciples, including James the son of Alphaeus, were a brother (
in any sense) to Jesus.
This is confirmed shortly after:
Mat 13:53 And when Jesus had finished these parables, he went away from there,
Mat 13:54 and coming to his hometown he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, “Where did this man get this wisdom and these mighty works?
Mat 13:55 Is not this the
carpenter's son? Is not
his mother called Mary? And are not his
brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?
Mat 13:56 And are not
all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?” (ESV)
The context is that of family, immediate family, including his father, mother, brothers, and sisters who are known in his hometown. James, the brother of Jesus, is not one of the twelve.
