Anyone have any pets?

I got a black standard poodle named Daphne, but we just call her Daf. She is going to be 11 on October 3rd (only reason I know her birthday is because we share one). She is a very affectionate dog.

My sister has some rodents of some sort. Big old hamster looking things that squeal like pigs. They are pretty annoying. However, I must admit, they can get to you. They recognize voices and will squeak when my mom comes home, because she feeds them hay. They like me because I give them my left over veggies and fruits. They are pretty funny sometimes, like when you stick them outside. My dog likes to play with them, not to hurt, just for play. They will crawl all over her and she ignores them, but she does like the pounce on them after she does a fail at stalking them.

Every now and then a pets thread will appear and I always list my critters. It seems each time the list changes as pets come and go. Our little Guinea pig Midnight and my cat Miranda are no longer with us.

The current critter count of the Ola Red-tail Ranch is:
3 dogs: Spot and George (cattle dogs) Antony (basic lovable mutt dog)
5 cats: Salem, Boo-Boo, Snowball, Mr. Mittens and Jasmine
1 Boa Constrictor named Issa
1 rat named Remy who was supposed to be the above's lunch
A hay-burning horse named Bandit

and, although this is supposed to be a business, we still treat our stock as pets so the cattle are
Randy (our bull)
Justin (the baby bull who will be Big Daddy someday)
Molly (the Grande Dame of the Red-tail Ranch)
Sarah
Daisy
Daffodil
Snapdragon
Lilac
Morning Glory
Beautiful

Yep, yep, more pets than any sane person should have. :yes

I love God's animals, I have owned dogs, cats, turtles, and a gator, which we had to give to the zoo, when it was getting to big. When I was a kid you could buy them in the pet stores in Philadelphia, without a problem, as long as you were 18 and up, you didn't even have to sign papers. Heck when I was growing up, Philly still had live chicken stores, that we went to, and pig slaughter houses all over the place, hold it I am going off subject here. But my dream pet is a dolphine, wanted one as a kid, and I still want one. And sometime I still daydream about having one.

dolphin do attack and hurt humans.

they shouldnt be tamed. i hate when we make them do tricks now, let them live in a tank and feed them if in captivity but if possible rehab and realise.

the dolphins are playful by nature and they also will in schools hunt an attack sharks to protect the young.

they also have followed small vessels playfully, thus the name in latin means brother of the sea.

lewis you must have liked flipper, that was a purpoise not a dolphin btw, the easy way to tell is how they swim.

i have a dog named cheyenne whom i have to hold when its scared by loud noises, it loves me when i give it treats and loves the neck and belly rubs, when ncis is one or bones . i swear that dog loves to watch as it has flopped on the couch, flipped upside down and watched the tv.

Jason if I had one, I would not keep it in captivity long, I would let it get to know me, then let it go, and she or he will always comeback to my private dock to see me. Just like Flipper did. :yes

I would not mind a dolphin if I had to go swimming in shark infested waters... They have been known to defend humans from sharks. And people say there is no God...

And Jason, my dog likes to change the channel. She does it whenever people are not giving her enough attention. And she likes to watch Hannity, because she is a smart dog!

they dont survive out in the wild once they forget to hunt. that purpoise was trained to do that. it was raised in miami seaaquarium and died there. i saw him as a kid. real friendly like to get you wet.

Jason there is a way to do it, it has to be like getting one that already knows how to hunt or something, but let it be free at the same time. Sort of like the Navy did the dolphines would go and come back.

they tracked those and that program was quite cruel, the dolphin died in the process often, they used them to find mines.

Of course they died. They were looking for bombs that go off when you get near them...

Lewis would just teach it to find sunken treasure...

No Jason I don't want my dolphine to die, I get real angry when I hear of dolphins and elephants being mistreated, I mean I boil over. Hmmm finding treasure huh :chin

:lol That's funny.

I love NCIS and Bones.

I currently have two dogs. Sandy, a female golden retriever and Max, a foxhound-mix. I love them to death. Sandy is in the hospital at the moment though, so I'm not too happy on that account. :sad

We've had Sandy since she was a puppy and even though she is ninety-six pounds, she still thinks she is one sometimes and tries to sit on our laps, lay on us, etc. She just a blig blob of mushness. Though she's very stubborn about certain things, such as being walked. If we have her on a leash, she will take the leash in her mouth and try to walk herself or try to steal the leash from us. And while I don't have nearly as much to say about her as my next dog (which may be a good thing), she's still an awesome dog.

Max is a shelter dog and in all honesty we should not have him, but I love him anyway. Being a foxhound, he's more meant for a farm and hunting. We live in the suburbs of NYC, so that doesn't work out very well. Though now i'm not so sure he'd like a farm. We do live by a small wetland area and a man who keeps a small farm lives near/in the woods. Max decided to run away at one point and that is where he went. The owner of the house has several horses and my dog decided to run around barking out them. The one horse eventually got annoyed and kicked my dog in the head, though luckily not too hard. He had gotten out a few more times after that, though never went back there again. :lol
He's also destroyed my drapes, curtains, and wood floors and has taken over my bed, which is no longer mine but his and I must ask permission to go on it now. Yet, out of my entire family, he has a strange liking and favoritism toward me and he's cute about it, so I gotta love him.

A pet has a place in the home but I see way too much emphasis on pets in our society. I don't have pets because I already have enough earthly distractions that take time away from the Lord.

Far too often, when I hear Christians talk about pets it's to such a level of detail all I can think about are the passages that talk about idolatry. Unfortunately, many Christians are just like the world in this respect and their idols have 4 legs and a tail. My view on pets, of course, is very unpopular in the context of a society obsessed with animals and their "rights" which has deeply permeated the culture of the church body as well.

If you think I'm being overly critical ask yourself this question. In the past year how much time and money have you spent on pets compared to what you have spent on the Lord. If you are honest, you may not like the answer you see.

I may be mistaken here, but it seems to me that you, implicitly at least, have a "dualistic" world view where you see a distinction between "earthly things" and "things for the Lord". I think that this is a false distinction. And perhaps your view on pets is influenced by such a dualism. God is in the business of bringing His kingdom to bear on this present "earthly domain". And that includes everything, including our four footed friends.

I suggest that Christians have largely misunderstood the intended relationship between man and the physical world, including animals.

We are to be care-taking stewards, not exploiters (I am now not criticizing you, but am speaking more generally). God is not in the business of rescuing human beings from a world He is then going to destroy. Instead, God is in the business of fixing this "earthy domain".

So, I suggest that care for the well-being and happiness of a pet can be a "kingdom act", a way of participating in God' s healing of His entire world. Of course, I think that this can be taken too far., But I do not think that we should think of animals as "just animals" as if they, and the rest of creation only exist for our "use".

I know that there are people here who think of pets as simply "chattel" and that, for example, if one bites you, you automatically have the right to have the animal "put down". I would not agree with this. Pets are part of God's beautiful creation and I suspect there will be judgement for those who treat them as mere "objects" or possessions.

drew thats another topic. as we have in the past used animals for medical reasearch, ie the space programs of us and russia, and the rhesus monkey and rats.

I have 5 cats, but I do not spend more money on them than the Lord---- nowhere near. But I know what you are saying. I let mine all outside and only in the garage at night or when it's cold. I feed them and give them medical attention if they are very sick (or just routine shots) but they never are sick because they live the way God intended them to live ---- outdoors eating a good mouse, rabbit or bird now and then. One of them must have been sick and she left and never came back (so this time last year I had 6) but it did not bother me much because that's what they do.

However, I do have a special place in my heart for our one cat, our "old man" cat who is 19 years old. He now lives in the house with us and outside only under supervision since he's now feeble and deaf. However, he tries to get away to the woods now and then. We realize one day we may have our back turned a minute too long and he'll get there and maybe never come back because that's what cats do.

I love cats, but they are not "one of the family". They are still cats, and many people attach too much meaning to animals. Mine served their purpose---- my car and house wires were never chewed up by rodents! :D
