In his video distributed on DVDs, Joseph Prince says that in our prayers, we need not be bothered whether we are adding the name Jesus. He says Paul never added 'In Jesus name' in during his miracles, so in our spontaneous prayer, we should not be worried whether we are saying a perfect prayer by adding the name Jesus. He even makes fun of it saying that the name of Jesus has become a rabbits foot or a lucky charm in our prayer. He overcomes this by saying that Jesus the high priest anyway takes our prayer to God. This is deceptively dangerous and demonic teaching. Jesus himself says that anything you ask in my name will be granted. 'Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. John 14:13-14'
Jesus is asking us to consciously intercede in his name. But we get demonic teaching like this to avoid the name of Jesus. When we intercede in the name of Jesus, we are claiming our salvation and our right as re-born children of God.

Joseph Prince says that we are trying to do a perfect prayer by adding the name of Jesus, and by doing that we do not need the High Priest Jesus to take our prayer to God. He says by saying a perfect prayer by including the name of Jesus we do not leave room for grace to work. He says that if do a perfect prayer (by adding the name of Jesus) we are DISQUALIFIED from the horn of grace. He says that perfect prayer (adding Jesus) leaves no room for grace. What can be more blasphemous than that. He said that Paul tells the lame man to get up and Joseph Prince jokes that he wanted to tell Paul that you forgot to add the name of Jesus so make him lie down again.

Joseph Prince says that Peter told a dead girl, 'Tabitha Arise' and she rose. Joseph Prince again jokes that he wanted to tell Peter that you forgot to say Jesus, put her back to death and try again! But he does not mention Acts 3:6 where Peter clearly said, “I have no silver or gold, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, stand up and walk!” Why did Joseph Prince not wish to tell Peter his theory of disqualification, that by adding the name of Jesus he has disqualified himself from grace. He says he is teaching his core group that there is no room for grace when you mention Jesus, so he says your prayer do not have to be perfect (mentioning Jesus) you just have to be aware that you're righteous and speak from your heart (meaning forget Jesus) A preacher who encourages you to avoid the name of Jesus is an advocate of the devil! Joseph Prince is a devil's advocate.

1 John 2:1-2;
Colossians 3:17;
Hebrews 7:25;

These verses tell us to call on Jesus for all things.

Joseph Prince is part of Word of Faith movement.
Many of his teachings come from Kenneth Hagen.
I have been following him for many years now.

It is a common teaching to bypass Jesus, that we have access to heaven without him.
We are like "little gods".
As the Word of Faith movement grows, these teachings become more open and more common.
They are very strong in Holy Spirit, prayer, healing, prophecy, and being apostles.
They are probably the fastest growing group in receiving money from believers, because, after all, we all want to be healed and believe we can be "mini gods", right?

I found your post to be surprising to me. I too have listened J. Prince now for about 4 yrs. I have never heard him ever make fun of the Lord or his servants in any way, so this is disturbing. I don't want to download this site's software, so I have ordered the teaching you are speaking of.

"He is even makes fun of it saying that the name of Jesus has become a rabbits foot or a lucky charm in our prayer."

I do know what he is talking about when he says this. The people who are mainly guilty of this is the WoF people and he may be having problems with that in his church. His statements are from a sermon at his church. I have heard him make fun of himself for believing things that were not scriptural, so he may even have been guilty of it himself. This may be what he was referring to when he said he wanted to tell Paul he didn't use Jesus name when he prayed. He may have seen the humor in the way some people (maybe even himself) think of the name and it should be clear from the scriptures about that because Paul and Peter didn't do that.

What I have seen is people thinking that they can just pray for anything they want and if the use the name of Jesus, it will happen. Rather like rubbing a rabbits foot or saying a magic word. Our Lord's name should never be used in such a manner. Our prayers being answered is by the grace of God and our faith in Jesus. We don't put our faith in a name but in the Son of God who has that name.
It rather reminds me of the scripture in Revelation where certain people say, (para) "but Lord we did (these things) in your name." and Jesus says to them "I never knew you".
Is there power in the name of Jesus? Yes. But it not the name itself, it's the person of Jesus Christ.

Now I am anxious to hear for myself what he said....

Blessings to you.

I think he has a good point but then he takes it to the extreme of saying we shouldn't say or pray in Jesus' name. That's where he goes too far. Praying "in Jesus' name" is a frame of mind not a magic incantation. It doesn't matter if you say it or not, it's if you believe that is what you are doing. We can not talk directly to God because we are sinful and unworthy individuals. It's through the salvation of Jesus that we become as brothers with Him and that's why we can now speak to God through him or, in other words, "in His name". So saying the words means nothing, it's the frame of mind.

Saying the name that is above every other name means nothing? At the name of Jesus every knee shall bow. If Jesus hadn't said Father forgive them for they know not what they do, couldn't he have just as easily have said Father destroy them? A frame of mind, sorry but that doesn't sit well with me not after what Jesus has been through. He loves us with an undying love please show some respect.

Ok, so then you believe saying the words is nothing more than a magical incantation since you don't like having a proper frame of mind and that's not important to you. The incantation is more important than what's in your heart. Sorry to hear that, but you just seem to be looking for trouble. Please you show some respect to my savior.

I don't know the full context of what that guy is teaching, but one word of caution here is that the phrase "in the name of Jesus" was never meant to be a rehearsed formula, which we sometimes are guilty of hastily adding at the end of a prayer (which itself may have been hasty).

In modern days we don't use it or think in the same way as the ancient Israelites did in terms of "name" indicating character and authority (which the Hebrew word shem indicates). 'Name' was not just a title but an indicator of a person's character, attributes, and authority. We probably would never hear someone today say in a sports game "in the name of our coach lets make this play". Most would just say "coach says/told us to make this play" or "lets do this for coach".

Now, however, the American Culture does actually have some remnants of this biblical language in it, but not to refer to persons primarily. Such as: "in the name of the law". Really? The law has a name? Which one? What is it called? And why should I care? That's not what this phrase means. It means "by the authority of the law".

When we pray "I bind you evil spirit in the name of Jesus" the spirit will not care what you call him but what authority that he has. If he has authority and he has granted it to you the spirit must flee. The Seven Sons of Sceva learned the hard way that evoking someone's name does not automatically give you their authority. Perhaps that is the point that guy was trying to make.

I often have to force myself to me mindful of this so that when I end a prayer with "in your name Lord" that it's not just "a saying" but a meaningful statement of faith that something is being committed to the reality of the personhood and authority of Jesus Christ!

God Bless,
Josh

If one teaches that we don't need to say the name of Jesus in prayer, then what does that say?
We don't need Jesus?
How does that help someone grow in their faith in Jesus?
How does that edify the church?

Not everyone has knowledge and understanding as others do.
Simple people need the straight truth.
Everything gets done through Jesus.
Saying the name of Jesus builds up your faith in Jesus.

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, you can't say it enough times!

Nice to hear well placed arguments by each one of you. Actually what I meant was to hear the audio which I have attached and explain me what you all understood. Joseph Prince's english is bit tough for me and what I understood is that he was sarcastic about the name of Jesus, rabbit's foot or lucky charm and what my heart received was that even if by chance or accidentally you miss out the name of Jesus still your prayer reaches up to heaven because we have a High Priest Jesus Christ between father and us.

I'm not a fan of Joseph Prince and I haven't heard any of his sermons but being critical or finding fault at an anointed person is my last choice. I thank God that I have only understood good things from the attached audio.

My humble request is if any one can give me a written translation of the attached audio tape so that I can be more clear in what he was saying

God Bless

I think the words "in Jesus' name" are far more than mere words. By using these words we invoke the POWER of Jesus.

Matthew 18:5, Mark 9:37, Luke 9:48
And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

Matthew 18:20
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Mark 9:39
But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

Mark 16:17
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

John 14:13 and 14.
And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

He also says this that when we petition the Father his name...
John 14:26
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

John 15:16
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

John 16:23
And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father inmyname, he will give it you.

Very informative posts Brothers, Sister, I agree with your perception of Mr. Prince and what he teaches. I too have heard some of his teachings. Some of what he teaches is true, but some is not good. When ever I come in contact with him, I listen with caution! People who just receive everything that a preacher says is in for a deception. The Bereans had it right.

Over the years I have had to take a hard look at "in Jesus Name". People ask me, and I have asked me. I have found that His Name is so holy, that I need to be careful how I apply it. Your posts are really good as you perceive the nature of His name, I agree. When I pray, I'm aware of "is it Gods will? 1 John 5:14 says "If we ask anything according to His will He hears us". So attaching Jesus' Name after a prayer does nothing to assure us of answered prayer. BUT, a good study of the Word of God, O.T. and N.T. gives us an idea of the will of God. God does not change. A good study of the Names of Jehovah, such as Jehovah Rapha, will give you God's nature. His nature is to heal. If you know God's nature when you are faced with a situation, you can pray with confidence because you know His nature to do something, thus you know His will. When you pray "in Jesus Name" you are praying what Jesus would pray. In other words, if Jesus was faced with the exact situation that you are facing, He would pray just what you are praying.

More joseph prince bashers, I heard a lot of people don't like him as a preacher because he is so wealthy, that preacher should not drive sports cars, etc, etc. J prince even points this out that he drives a sports car, and acts cocky.

Not Mr Prince bashers, tagan . Merely a discussion about about the merits of listening to him, and whether he teaches truth, partial truth, or no truth.

Deb,

I don't always agree with you, but you are a good Berean, and a faithful woman of God.

God Bless you.

That's right AirDancer, I would never "bash" a person who claims to be a Christian. None of us are perfect, always speaking truth. We are not allowed to judge motives, such as sport cars, but are allowed to judge works, and teachings.

Thank you, JLB. I believe the same things about you. You have a heart for God and His word.

God Bless you.

A thought or two...

Exo_20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Most of us quickly think of swearing.... When one is adopted s/he takes the name of the father.... Taking the name of the Father with out being His is taking taking that name in vain...

Rom_8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Eph 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

When i would speak to my dad i did not need to remind him I was his kid.... At times when speaking of him to someone else it was the right thing to do... doing so says i am taking the liberty to use my dads name....i am his kid and i have that right...

I am a child of the King i have the authority to use His name.

I so agree, Chopper . As Christians, we are told to employ discernment when evaluating teachings/works of others, and this definitely would include those who are or who seek to be elders and leaders.

I have never heard Joseph Prince, but I think from just reading the description I understand what he is saying. Formulas or rituals are not what God wants. God wants us active and involved. To be thinking and committed to what we are doing in his name. So in that sense just ritually saying in Jesus name isn't necessarily important if in your heart you are praying to Jesus in your heart. More pointedly there are many humans named Jesus. So wouldn't the name with the title be more appropriate? or just the title? Such as In Jesus the Christs name I pay or just in Christs name. That is how I learned it.
