From goal.com, Rooney and Wilshere say:

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney labels Real Madrid's Pepe 'an idiot' for Clasico stamp on Barcelona's Lionel Messi

The England striker, who is no stranger to acts ofpetulance himself, admonished the Portugal international for failing to control his temper

Wayne Rooney labelled Real Madrid defender Pepe "an idiot" for appearing to stamp on Barcelona's Lionel Messi during Wednesday night's Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Pepe appeared to deliberately tread on his opponent midway through the second half of the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-final clash in the Spanish capital.

Manchester United striker Rooney, no strange to acts of on-field petulance himself, was amongst the first to admonish the Portugal international for failing to control his temper.

The England forward wrote on Twitter : "Pepe. What an idiot. Sometimes people wind u up."

When Messi then set Eric Abidal up for the winning goal moments later, Rooney added:"Haha. That goal serves pepe right."

Rooney's international colleague Jack Wilshere was also less than impressed, adding: "Poor from Pepe!"

Pepe's stamp

Gerard Piqué didn't want to get dragged into the fuss about Pepe treading on Messi's hand, and merely stated that "everybody saw it and has spoken about it." He feels that there are other people who are responsible for judging these actions and "if they think that what happened went beyond what is permissible on the field of play, they have to do something. We at the club don't think we should go about demanding that a player from another club should be punished".

He was pleased to observe that although Messi was the victim of Pepe's action, he did not retaliate against the Portuguese international."Leo is a very good person. We have got used to the way he reacts and saw how Leo stayed calm, which what he should do ... We should be thankful that he didn't react". Piqué still insisted that the Madrid players behaved impeccably, especially his colleagues from the Spanish national team...

To Pepe, or anyone else guilty of doing such a dastardly thing:

22 May the table set before them become a snare;
may it become retribution and a trap.
23 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,
and their backs be bent forever.
24 Pour out your wrath on them;
let your fierce anger overtake them.
25 May their place be deserted;
let there be no one to dwell in their tents.
...do not let them share in your salvation.
28 May they be blotted out of the book of life
and not be listed with the righteous." (Psalm 69:22-25,28 NIV1984)

...or, sit out two games and be fined $50,000.00.

Barcelona's Carles Vilarrubi questions sincerity of Pepe¡¯s apology

The 57-year-old believes the Portugal defender does not regret his behaviour on Wednesday and feels that Real Madrid are responsible for the incident

Barcelona vice-president Carles Vilarrubi believes that Real Madrid's Pepe has no regrets about stamping on Lionel Messi in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-final at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

The Portugal international issued a statement on Thursday to dismiss the notion that he intended to hurt the Argentine when he stood on his hand during his side's 2-1 loss to Barca.

"Pepe tried to make a rectification that does not exist," Villarrubi told RAC1 . "He did not say that he made a mistake, only that he did not wish to do it.

"No-one believes that."

Vilarrubi added that Madrid are to blame for the situation as he believes that los Blancos are too lenient when handling aggressive incidents.

"The problem is that these people feel protected," he explained. "After the finger in the eye [of Tito Vilanova], there was a justification from Madrid.

"This generates a breeding ground for Pepe to lose it and do what he did."

Former Real Madrid midfielder Michel: It is too late for Pepe to change

The ex-Getafe coach thinks that the defender will continue being a troublesome player and pointed out that his stamp on Lionel Messi was not an isolated incident

Former Real Madrid midfielder Michel does not believe that Pepe will be able to improve his behaviour on the field.

The Portugal defender has come under fire for stamping on Lionel Messi during his side's 2-1 loss to Barcelona in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

It was the latest incident involving Pepe since hejoined Madrid in 2007, the most serious of which dates back to 2009, when he kicked Getafe's Javier Casquero twice during a league match, an action that earned him a 10-match ban.
Pepe has since apologised to Messi , insisting he never intended to hurt the Argentine, but Michel, who played at Madrid between 1982 and 1996, is worried that these incidents will continue to happen.

"I think it is too late for Pepe now," Michel told Radio Marca . "This is a complicated situation, it will bring prejudice.[image]
"He says he is sorry. A player can make a mistakeand he does not know why it happened. I have seen Pepe regret what he did to Casquero and three years have passed since then.

"It is surely too late for him to change."

Real Madrid director Emilio Butragueno says that Pepe is a 'good kid'

The 48-year-old admits that the Portuguese could be sanctioned by the club, but asserts that he has been targeted
By Enis Koylu

Real Madrid director of institutional relations Emilio Buntragueno has come out in support of Pepe , in the midst of the controversy surrounding the 28-year-old.

The Portuguese defender was widely criticised for his boisterous performance in Wednesday's Clasico, which featured a stamp on Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

However, Butragueno has stated that Pepe is nota bad person, and has been targeted due to his athletic ability.

"Pepe is a nice guy and very passionate. He has suffered because he's a good athlete," Butragueno said according to Sport .

However, the 48-year-old remained tight-lipped as to whether Pepe would receive censure from the club for his performance.

"We have an internal system," he explained."Much has been said over him, and we are no going to participate with the public discussions. It's something that will be discussed amongst ourselves."

The director, who represented Real Madrid as a player, has also asserted that his side's defence of the Copa del Rey title is far from over, despite a 2-1 deficit after the quarter-final first leg.

"The tie is not over yet. You will se us fight for this shield," he vowed

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho defends Pepe after Clasico stamp on Lionel Messi and hits out at Barcelona's Sergio Busquets

Jose Mourinho - Real Madrid

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has leapt to the defence of Pepe after his side's 2-1 loss to Barcelona in the teams' Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg on Wednesday.

The Brazilian-born enforcer was accused of deliberately stamping on Lionel Messi's hand during the first-leg clash at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The ex-Porto defender has since said that the incident was unintentional, but has been criticised heavily in the press both in Spain and internationally.

Mourinho, however, believes Pepe's claims that the stamp was accidental and has asked the press to stop the witch-hunt.

"If Pepe said publicly that the stamp was intentional and he told me, it would have really bothered me," Mourinho said at a press conference ahead of Sunday's clash at home to Athletic Bilbao.

"But he has said it was not intentional and I believe him. If any of you think he is a liar, say it. Let's not make this a never-ending story," he commented.
The 48-year-old tactician then brought up the accusations against Sergio Busquets last season, when he was accused of racist comments against Marcelo, and feels the media's approach was different in covering that controversy.

"I didn't see you last season doubting a player who made racist remarks and said he didn't. Everyone believed it was true, even Uefa. Now Pepe says it wasn't intentional [and nobody believes him]," he concluded.

Bernd Schuster: Pepe is a different person when he puts on a Real Madrid shirtThe German says that the defender's behaviour in Wednesday's Clasico does not reflect what type of man he is off the field but reckons the Portuguese goes too far sometimes

Bernd Schuster - ex Real Madrid

Former Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster does not understand the reasons behind Pepe's aggressive behaviour on the field of play.

The Portugal international appeared to stamp on Lionel Messi's hand during his side's 2-1 loss to Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey quarter-final at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Schuster, who coached Pepe in 2007-08, stressed that the defender is 'a different person' off the field and noted that the former Porto man's billing as an aggressive player began when he kicked Javier Casquero twice in a league match in 2009, an action which earned him a 10-game ban.

"I do not need to say how good Pepe is, how a great person and professional he is, or that he has to be at Madrid," Schuster told Marca .
"What he did was ugly, but this is all because we can watch everything that happens on the pitch.
"Migueli, [Fernando] Hierro, [Roberto] Ayala, these are players who hit hard, but now we can watch everything.
"Since the day of the incident with Casquero, I do not know what has happened with Pepe. It is something rare, something you cannot explain if you know him.
"When Pepe puts on the shirt, he is a different guy. Jose Mourinho knows how to take advantage of these things, but sometimes he goes too far."
The 52-year-old coach, who is currently out of work, then admitted he was surprised with Mourinho's formation in Wednesday's match.
"There are some things that are hard to understand
," Schuster added. "[Ricardo] Carvalho had not been playing in a long time, [Hamit] Altintop perhaps does not improve the team's level and Pepe played again in midfield.
"But most of all, what happens when you change so many things is that you are taking many risks.
Barca have been playing in the exact same way since I left Madrid, but Madrid try to change things in every Clasico.
"There is one team which plays always the sameevery year and another who tries the impossible to win."
