I see the point in zoning laws and other regulations. Unfortunately, it seems that a lot of people, without some sort of regulations in place, would do crazy things with their property, given the resources. Why? I dunno. I mean, I always thought of zoning and Community rules as being a middle class, upper middle class thing, but I've read and heard of more affluent people turning into Neighbors From Hell, so...I guess its everybody, lol. Actually...with rich people, it could be worse: they can afford to do a lot more terrible things, and they can afford lawyers. Ugh.
Where I live, the big thing isn't zoning...its getting your old house on some sort of official register. Its a pain. And then keeping it on there...apparently, they have all sorts of rules on what you can and cannot do to your house if you want to qualify for or stay on the List. Bad for the homeowner; probably good for aesthetics and maintaining little pieces of history.
So..yeah...its sad but true that zoning and other regulations probably make it possible for people to coexist. This abuse of zoning regulations is ridiculous. I think the real problem is that people can't solve their problems without resorting to rules, lawyers, police, courts, all that. And people who make and enforce rules clearly don't like to cut other people slack, and not just with zoning.
I read some sociology stuff about "micro-aggression" in modern day society...basically, we're becoming tactless, rude, and litigous. On the plus side, many violent crimes are less frequent that in decades past, lol. Oh well....
