I want to know how you all interpret this verse. Especially the "lean not on your own understanding" part.
To me it means that I shouldn't add my own ideas to the Bible. Or subtract from the Bible either.
I definitely see how this can tie into some doctrine being discussed here and I am not trying to say I have it all right by any means.

Proverbs 3:5-6

New International Version (NIV)

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.[a]

Footnotes:

  1. Proverbs 3:6 Or will direct your paths

You are on the right track with this. We should refrain from trying to force our own ideas on the bible, or extract some preconceived idea from it (integesis vs. exegesis). We should seek the Holy Spirit's guidance whenever we are studying the bible.

I think it not only applies to Biblical study but life in general. We tend to want to do things our own way rather than following God. Isn't this what Adam and Eve did when they took that fatal bite? They desired what was forbidden. Typical of us isn't it?

I'm sure you're on the right track.

If you look at chapter 8 of Proverbs, much is said about wisdom personified. Paul to the Corinthians says to believers: 'Of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, Who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption' (1 Corinthians 1.30).

Blessings.
