One resource said, " flabbergast , perhaps from some dialect (in 1823 it was noted as a Sussex word), likely an arbitrary formation from flabby or flapper and aghast " ; but the image which came to mind beforehand was that of a flabby wet dog shaking the water out of his/her coat right in one's face as they tried to relax by the lake ... but what do I know ?
