i bought a 250g of this raw cocoa. Someone tells me it is unsafe to consume this.

Any nutritionist here?

I was just digging around the interlinks and found this.

Raw chocolate contains the alkaloid called theobromine, and this is how it can affect your body:

  • Theobromine, which is an alkaloid found in cacao does have an impact on the human central nervous system, smaller yet similar to caffeine and also stimulates the heart to a greater degree.(1,2)
  • Theobromine has been cited as potentially causing addiction to chocolate (3)
  • Theobromine can also cause restlessness, sleeplessness, tremors and anxiety. (4)

You should look into it.

I guess it would depend on what you plan on doing with it. If you are wanting to take it in its current state, I would hesitate until I know more. But if you are going to turn it into chocolate, then I don't see any problems other than what we know about chocolate already.

So it sounds like it's effects, if any, would be similar to drinking mild coffee.

Something like that. I did a search on Theobromine. Doesn't sound all that harmful. (unless you're a dog)

Facts about Theobromine
Although theobromine does not cause harmful effects with humans, it is highly toxic to some domestic animals, including dogs and horses. With the animals, theobromine can lead to cardiac arrhythmias and seizures.
Theobromine has a bitter flavour, which gives dark chocolate its typical bitter taste.

Thanks a lot for the replies. I try to limit the quantity of sugar I consume. That is the reason I had to buy this stuff.

Who has ever tasted pure and raw cocoa? It is dreadfully bitter. So when you buy that stuff for your tea (name withheld - I guess you all know them)and taste it...it is next to sugar.

There are other ingredients tho. However I wonder the quantity of sugar that was added to completely 'tame' the bitterness. I was really scared.

There is a particular drink (alcoholic) that contains roughly 19 cubes of sugar. Yet it is fantastically bitter. Imagine the taste without 19 cubes.

So after considering all these I had to go natural with the raw and unadulterated stuff

You may wish to try this:

buy a soft drink and empty the content into a pot. Heat it. Do not decompose it completely. You'd see a huge mass of something black. A greater percentage of this is sugar ('and' sugar related stuff). Its original state changed. This marks the presence of sugar.

You can do the same with raw sugar or its solution (aq). You'd get the same result.

It'd amaze you how much sugar you consume per bottle.

It seems the only safe food is the perfect mom's milk :lol

But why would you choose to use raw cocoa if it tastes so terrible? (Yeah, I've tasted it.) It's just one ingredient in chocolate and isn't a substitute for chocolate any more than flour is a substitute for a donut!

What about Honey as a replacement for sugar? I went looking around and found this.

Honey Vs Sugar: A Comparison

Sugar is just one compound. Honey is several compounds missed together. To me, sugar is sweeter than honey.

Half a glass of honey: i feel sick. But for sugar...a kg. :lol

back when I was 8-14 I can remember cocoa in the big brown can before Nesquick. It was bitter straight out of the can.
My grandmother dipped snuff adn us grand kids wanted to try it, she would not let us, one day she took this cocoa and added sugar wrapped in a small piece of paper so we could carry in around and it was our dip we would use it like she did snuff.
It only messed me up half way im still normal at times.
