Repent Repent Repent ...

Repentance isn’t a very popular thing to bring up, but we all have to repent of our sin before we can find lasting happiness.

From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Matt 4:17 RSV

If someone were fulfilling Rom 2:6 -- would there be a need for them to repent?

If I thought for a minute that I could make myself sinless by repenting. Or as you say

repent repent repent

are you then sinless?

Repentance made me sorrowful over my sin, but did not rid me of same.

How about you?

I did spend a little time wrenching the lie cycle out of my mind and heart though.

Sin in mind, repent, falsely think I am now sinless and acceptable

then

repeat the cycle for every single errant thought. Even just an imperfect thought.

Sin in mind, repent, falsely think I am now sinless and acceptable<>Sin in mind, repent, falsely think I am now sinless and acceptable<>Sin in mind, repent, falsely think I am now sinless and acceptable<>Sin in mind, repent, falsely think I am now sinless and acceptable

It really is a vicious and unrewarding way to live ones life in faith. Been there, done that. Gave it up for being a worthless and ineffective LIE that I picked up from various false teachings. Mostly from the freewill and orthodox camps.

Heb 6:1-6
1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3 And this will we do, if God permit.
4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

The problem with repentance is self rightousness. In order to repent one must first admit they are a sinner. The problem with the world is if they can prove there is no God they don't have to repent.

The problem others have with repentance is that repentance is a work and they do not think they have to do any works in order to be saved, they can still be saved while impenitent which is contrary to Rom 2:4-5 Lk 13:3,5 Acts 2:38 etc.

I thread I started some time back:

"The Work of Repentance Versus Faith only"

If someone were fulfilling Rom 2:6 -- would there be a need for them to repent?

That would mean you would have to be a sinless person...I only know of One that walked this earth that did not commit sin.

When I taught 6th grade girls sunday school I remarked that I didn't hear repentance talked about much in this church. They were told to accept Jesus into their hearts but were never asked if they had changed their minds about sin prior to baptism. To my astonishment, even the PK said "we have never done anything wrong. What sin?" I went down the 10 commandments with especial attention to false witness, coveting and stealing. It became very quiet.
Repenting is just agreeing with God about sin. The person who denies that they are doing anything wrong by embezzeling, or by having sex with their children, has not repented. The person who is ashamed of these things and cries out God be merciful to me, a sinner, has repented. Ceasing to do these things should follow repentance, but not necessarily. The thief on the cross only changed his mind as to whom Jesus was and cried out to Him. But when we acknowledge Who He is, the Holy Spirit also shines light on what we are and what we have done. This is not someone yelling at us to repent and be saved again every time we walk in the church doors.
If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
1 John 1:10 NKJV

Maybe the girls in 6th grade were too young to understand. Repentance means to change the thought and so change the opinion or purpose; this is the inward change and naturally leads to a changed outward life, which is usually designated as "a reformation of life." Repentance as used in the New Testament has reference to changing the mind, purpose, from sin to holiness, and no one will do this who does not feel deep sorrow for the sin he has already committed; godly sorrow produces repentance. Sometimes the word translated here as "repentance" is also translated "turn," "be converted."

Repentance is ceasing to commit sins and making changes and one has not repented until he/she has made the appropriate changes.

Rom 2:1

Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.
Rom 2:2

But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.
Rom 2:3

And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?
Rom 2:4

Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? :biglol

I fully agree with you, born again. The part that surprised me is that they claimed to be without sin--ever. This indicates that they had not changed their minds to agree with God about what He calls sin. Yet many of them had been baptised, incuding the pastors' daughter. Perhaps an "easy salvation" was being preached instead of
"repent and be baptized for the remission of sins". Again, 1John 1:10 If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us."NKJV I don't think they were too young. I do think not all of the gospel was being presented at that church. They did not show evidence of being born again before or after baptism.

Luke 13:3
I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.

Repent or perish. Those who preach a judgeless Gospel are leading people to everlasting destruction. This leads me to another verse:

Matthew 23:15
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.

We have Christians who travel around to win people for Christ, but because they aren't teaching repentance, they are actually playing for Satan's team. Satan wishes us to believe that we can be saved without repentance.

Rom 3:22

Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
Rom 3:23

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Rom 3:24

Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Rom 3:25

Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Rom 3:26

To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

You stopped one verse too soon: Romans 2
5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God

I agree its a stubborn man who does not seek Gods mercy, but tries try earn his own righteousness by works!

Rom 3:26

To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Rom 3:27

Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
Rom 3:28

Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Yes! repent, repent, repent!
Of your pride! of your judgment of others! Turn to Gods mercy and trust not on your own works!
