When I taught 6th grade girls sunday school I remarked that I didn't hear repentance talked about much in this church. They were told to accept Jesus into their hearts but were never asked if they had changed their minds about sin prior to baptism. To my astonishment, even the PK said "we have never done anything wrong. What sin?" I went down the 10 commandments with especial attention to false witness, coveting and stealing. It became very quiet.
Repenting is just agreeing with God about sin. The person who denies that they are doing anything wrong by embezzeling, or by having sex with their children, has not repented. The person who is ashamed of these things and cries out God be merciful to me, a sinner, has repented. Ceasing to do these things should follow repentance, but not necessarily. The thief on the cross only changed his mind as to whom Jesus was and cried out to Him. But when we acknowledge Who He is, the Holy Spirit also shines light on what we are and what we have done. This is not someone yelling at us to repent and be saved again every time we walk in the church doors.
If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
