16And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.

The mark of the beast will cause a great falling away of many of the saints of God as they believed a lie that they would be caught up to Christ before the seven trumpets of God's great wrath being poured out into the world that will cause great tribulations. When the son of perdition takes his literal seat in Jerusalem he will demand allegiance of the people throughout every nation on every continent as he deceives the nations showing he is God by using lying signs and wonders, promising peace, safety and provision to all who will bow down and worship him, 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12.

IMO, I believe this mark is that of the thoughts of the mind and the actions of the hands as many will believe he is God and will reach out and accept him as God, especially after the chaos of the first six trumpets of God's mighty wrath being poured out into the world. People who are not God's own will gladly receive this false god that promise peace, safety and provision.

In John’s vision, persons receiving the figurative “mark,” of “the wild beast” on their forehead or right hand would symbolize one’s giving attention, devotion, and active support to “the wild beast” and its “image,” as one they serve. (Revelation 13:16, 17; 14:9, 10; 20:4) They are expected to worship the wild beast, letting it rule their lives, so as to receive its mark; and thus, would be shown to be opposers of God, for the wild beast (governments) received its authority from the dragon, Satan the Devil.

Those who refuse to accept the mark of the wild beast have had constant problems. Anybody engaged in everyday activities are pressured to do things the way the wild beast does such as celebrating holidays, fighting court battles and endure violent mobbings and other persecutions. In many areas of the earth, anyone who stands for Bible truth is ostracized by governments, and even criticized by family and friends.
