I hear a lot of confusion from folks about the times we're in and the times that are coming, so I thought I'd throw in some stuff here and hopefully not add to the confusion:
Armageddon, which is coming, is not the end of the world, Jesus calls it the end of the age. Jesus closes out this age and enter the millennium. The millennium is the period of time Jesus rules the nations, on this earth, with a rod of iron for a thousand years. At the end of the thousand years, satan is released from the abyss and goes off to deceive the nations once again. The bible does not tell us how long after satan's release it will take to deceive all the nations once again, but once satan accomplishes his mission to continue his war against God and surrounds the beautiful city, God Himself will pour out the brimstone and fire and destroy satan and all who joined forces with him, and THEN this heaven and earth is removed and a new heaven and new earth replaces them. That is the end of the world. After this the great white throne and the reapers who gather the sheep and the goats for judgment before God's throne. This is called the 2nd death. Those who went through the First resurrection will not be among those being judged here.
Armageddon is the battle that ends this age with Jesus returning and fighting with a double edge sword. The battle that ends the world is where God sends brimstone and fire from heaven and basically vaporizes them. Two separate battles.
The OT describes both of these events and many today confuse which battle being described is the one that depicts the correct time. It really doesn't matter however because we need to prepare ourselves to persevere and endure "to the end".
