Bible Study Reverence and Awe

The Lord has spoken to me today through the Scriptures that I should reverence and stand in awe of God.

How do I do this?

Jesus said, "If you love Me, keep my commands". Also, that we should love the Lord with all our heart, mind, strength, and soul. Angel, I think our lives demonstrate reverence and awe. To put Jesus first in our daily goings on, to get out of bed in the morning with Jesus on our mind and He is the last Person we think about before sleep comes on, is a very hard thing to do. The more we practice the presence of God in our thoughts throughout the day, demonstrates our awe of Him. Reverence is when we don't use His name in a loose way, like an exclamation "oh my God" at something that looks nice. It is how we use His Name. We are to protect His Name in our hearts....that's what I think.

Thank you Angel for this thread, it is a very important subject! I'm thinking that how we conduct ourselves in posting back and forth will show whether we have reverence for the Lord or not.

The Lord spoke to me this afternoon. Because the Chapters I read are so random, this is more than coincidence!
The Lord is telling me to awe and reverently fear Him. Here are the verses I came across:

Dueteronomy 5:29
"Oh, that they had such a [mind and] hear in them always [reverently] to fear Me and keep all my commandments, that it might go well with them and with their children forever!"

Job 13:11
"Shall not His majesty make you afraid, and should not your awe for Him restrain you."

Psalm 111:9-10
"He has sent redemption to His people; He has commanded His covenant to be forever; holy is His name, inspiring awe, reverence, and godly fear. The reverent fear and worship of the Lord is he beginning of Wisdom and skill [the preceding and the first essential, the prerequisite and the alphabet]; a good understanding, wisdom, and meaning have all those who do [the will of the Lord]. Their praise of Him endures forever."

Mark 4: 37-40
"And a furious storm of wind [of hurricane proportions] arose, and the waves kept beating into the boat, so that it was already becoming filled. But He [Himself] was in the stern [of the boat], asleep on the [leather] cushion; and they awoke Him and said to Him, Master, do you not care that we are perishing? And He arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, Hush now! Be still [muzzled]! And the wind ceased (sank to rest as if exhausted by its beating) and there was [immediately] a great calm (a perfect peacefulness).
He said to them, Why are you so timid and fearful? How is it that you have no faith (no [s]firmly relying trust)?
And they were filled with great awe and [t]feared exceedingly and said one to another, Who then is this, that even wind and sea obey Him?"

I am in awe of the way the Lord has spoken to me!!!
I'm going to start a thread to learn ways I can reverence and stand in awe of God.
I will be thinking about this all day...

This first passage is about fortitude and perseverance; for it's easy to be awed momentarily -- but it can become more difficult to remember one's place after becoming familiar with the Lord.

Job 13:11
"Shall not His majesty make you afraid, and should not your awe for Him restrain you."

This second passage is about speaking carelessly of the Lord; of wanting to win an argument more than being careful to say only the truth, and in Love. Reverence for the Lord, here, is to close one's mouth and not lay the difficulty or guilt based on superficial judgment even if it is "easy" to do so.
(Matthew 12:36)

Psalm 111:9-10
"He has sent redemption to His people; He has commanded His covenant to be forever; holy is His name, inspiring awe, reverence, and godly fear. The reverent fear and worship of the Lord is he beginning of Wisdom and skill [the preceding and the first essential, the prerequisite and the alphabet]; a good understanding, wisdom, and meaning have all those who do [the will of the Lord]. Their praise of Him endures forever."

This third passage is a bit obscure. The psalm is one of a group known as alphabet poems, which don't translate well into English. The idea it quotes, though, is that "Awe/Fear" of the Lord is the beginning of the path which leads to wisdom. The Idea is more fully explored in Isaiah as a seven step/fold path of growth from the most basic gift (awe) to the most mature (wisdom):

Isaiah 11:2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might [strength/perseverence/fortitude], the spirit of knowledge and of the fear[Awe] of the LORD;

The one who has it in perfection, is of course -- Jesus; who "grew in wisdom before God and men." and had to be about his father's business.
Luke 2:40,52

Mark 4: 37-40
"And a furious storm of wind [of hurricane proportions] arose, and the waves kept beating into the boat, so that it was already becoming filled. A curious passage....
Awe ought to lead to knowledge, and knowledge ought to lead to perseverance.....
But, what do you think the Apostles "know" after this event?

It's a good day of the Lord's to do so.

Thank you for the insight!

I bought a book quite awhile ago called "The Joy of Fearing God" by Jerry Bridges.
I think it's appropriate to read now! :)

What a great question/thread! Reverence and awe should be an ongoing thing. Awe is awareness. We would stand in awe if we were to witness a wonderful miracle, like a healing or something, but how about when you step outside in the morning and it is a beautiful day, and you take in the majestic view and remember that this is Gods creation? I stand in awe of our Lords creation. What a wonderful planet and creation that He has done. I saw the snow and frost all over the tree branches. The streets were clear but the trees were covered and it was a wonderful sight. I was not there when He hung the stars in the sky. I was not there when He planted the trees and told them to grow. I...stand in awe of Gods creation and creative abilities! We messed it up, but it is still a wonderful place and very beautiful. Awe. His fingerprints are everywhere.

To reverence God moment by moment seems to come easier. I have a hard time praying with my hat on. When I invite the Lord to ride with me to work, I have the urge to clear the passenger seat so that He has a clear place to sit. I absolutely believe that He rides with me and walks with me, especially when I invite Him to. I know He is there. It would be respectful to clear the seat for someone who rides with you. To remove your hat in front of certain people. Thing like that. There is certainly more to it than that, with the LORD. but you get the idea. To show reverence and respect to. If we are walking with the Lord, and He with us, then, why not? Being a spiritual being, the Lord does not need a clear seat to sit upon, but it is respect. The constant awareness and belief that He is with us. This is true. So...walk like it. I can see, if standing in front of the Lord, a visitation or wotnot, to bow upon the conclusion of the conversation and back off a few steps before turning to walk away. Not to turn ones back to the Lord. Reverence and respect to the Lord GOD.

I agree.
I kind of lost my temper on the finches thread.
I hope they will forgive me.

Did you get cranky ? tsk tsk :D I'm sure no one holds unforgiveness for it.

I'm in awe when I think of how Yahweh came to Earth and died for me so that I can live forever with Him. He never lets me down.

I'm in awe when I look at an Autumn sky and just have to say "Oh Lord look what you've made here ".

Reverence means that of respect as we respect God in his word and stand in awe of all His righteousness in the beauty that surrounds us. Upon waking we give God praise and glory for another day as we surrender our will to that of His will for the day ahead of us. Christ should always be our center of focus in all we do and say throughout the day. I still stand in awe of Gods grace that has forgiven a sinner such as I and that can love me so unconditionally.

Psalms 29:2 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
Psalms 96:9 O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.

Me too. He died for me while I was still a sinner and a wretch. Put it all on the line for me...how do you thank someone for that? You can't. But I know that my life is not my own. I feel good about that too! Some may not, but, he's soo good to us and will continue to be and I know it.

Praise the Lord! :)

I found an answer of how you can apply reverence and awe towards God:

Deuteronomy 6:1-5
specifically:

2 That you may [reverently] fear the Lord your God...and keep all His statutes and His commandments...
5 And you shall love the Lord your God...with your entire being

Jesus said, "If you love Me, keep my commands". Also, that we should love the Lord with all our heart, mind, strength, and soul. Angel, I think our lives demonstrate reverence and awe. Amen to that Chopper.I totally agree.
