He was about 6 ft away.he ate and wasn't agressive.I thought about killing him but he wasn't a threat

That's very true.
I once had a particular garter (some people call them 'garden') snake turn aggressive .... and he was living in MY herb bed! The audacity!

Yes, they do swim. I've encountered them before while swimming in lakes. They were more afraid of people, though ... when they each saw people, they turned and swam away fast. Perhaps Illinois water moccasins are more timid than Florida ones?
