In the Old Covenant the Sabbath was a certain day of the week sunset Friday til sunset Saturday. Some Christian now believe it is sunset Saturday til sunset Sunday, many honor the 7th day of the week, many more the 1st day. I think both are right. But even though both can be right, I think by looking at the Sabbath as a day we all miss the True Sabbath as a Person.
In Matthew 11:28-30 the Sabbath as a Person twice tells His followers of His Rest. The Sabbath as a whole is Best describe not as a day, but as the Person of Jesus Christ not only did He redeem us but He gives the Truest Rest. Paul in Colossians 2:16-17 describes many holy things, including the Sabbath calling these shadows of things to come but the body (church) is of Christ. IMHO this means Christ is my Sabbath or Rest. Jesus said it’s finished in John 19:30. We are all sanctify and perfected by Christ, Hebrews 10:10,12; while being granted His Rest/Sabbath Hebrews 4:9-10. Ceasing from our works; so the Spirit can produce His works in us, Ephesians 2:10.
Perhaps Jesus is the Sabbath we all truly need.

The Sabbath. Another controversial topic among Christians.
What saith the scripture?
Did the the Apostles and the Christian Church commanded to keep the Sabbath?
The book of Acts is a wonderful book for learning, as it is filled with examples. As brother David Middleton pointed out in:
Acts 2:46
“And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,”
***The church displayed love and fellowship daily, not once a week.
Acts 5:42
“And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.”
***Peter and other Apostles ministered daily, and not every Sabbath.
Acts 6:1
“And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.”
***Again, the service to God is done daily.
Acts 16:5
“And so were the churches established in the faith, and increased in number daily.”
***For the church to increase daily, they also had to preach the word of God daily.
Acts 17:11
“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”
Acts 17:17
“Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.”
***Consider this verse, Paul disputed with the Jews (Sabbath Keepers) in the synagogue, If the Sabbath was binding, shouldn't both
Acts 19:9
“But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.”
***Paul did not consider one day above others, his ministry was to proclaim the Gospel to everyone, and that he did daily.
2 Corinthians 11:28
“Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.”
***Paul labored day and night, caring after the churches.
Now, someone might say that Paul kept the Sabbath because he went into the synagogues on the Sabbath.
Acts 17:1-3
“Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: 2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, 3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.”
***First, Paul was traveling, and when he came to Thessalonica he went into a synagogue of the Jews. Paul's manner was: to reason with the Jews out of the scriptures concerning Christ just as he had done in other places. It would only be reasonable for Paul to find an opportunity to preach Christ on the Sabbath since the Jews had their service on that day. If you notice verse 3, Paul was not there to keep any Sabbath, but rather to reason with them out of the scriptures
Colossians 2:16-17
16 “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: 17 Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.”
***Paul is telling us that we should not let anybody judge us for not observing the ordinances of the Law, such as the eating of unclean animals (meat), the feast of tabernacles, trumpets (holy days), or the monthly (new moon) or any old covenant (sabbath), which were but types and shadows of what was to come, even Christ.
Some one might then say, but Jesus Kept the Sabbath; Yes he did. and here is why:
Galatians 4:4
“But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,”
***Jesus kept the Law. Kept the commandments. kept the feast days. he upheld the Law.
Matthew 5:17
“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”
***Contrary to the belief that Jesus would do away with the Law, he did not, he came to fulfill (fill up,) everything that was written of him by the Prophets, the Psalms.
Remember, the new covenant/testament came into effect when Jesus died. Jesus kept the Sabbath while in the old covenant/testament.
Hebrews 9:16-17
16 “For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.”
17 “For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.”
When Jesus died, he said "it is finished" and the temple vial rent from top to bottom, meaning, the New Covenant brothers, came into effect.
John 19:30
“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
Matthew 27:51
“And behold, the veil of the Temple was rent in twain, from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;”
Brothers, this Belief that we are to labor six days and rest for one (Sabbath) is not supported in the New Covenant. I hope this information has been a blessing to you.

It could be that Paul didn't mention the Sabbath observance because it was taken for granted that is should be ovserved.
The Sabbath was made for man...for man's benefit.
Man didn't have to go hungry because it was the Sabbath...if that was so, the man was made for the Sabbath.
God instituted the Sabbath as a sign for the Israelites because they needed rest after having been slaves for hundreds of years. The Sabbath was made for THEM...so that they could rest.
I agree that we're under grace.
So what other commandment could we break?

Hi FHG....
I have a difficult time with this and here's my position:
Honoring the Sabbath is one of the 10 commandments.
It was said to be FOREVER.
So how do we have the right to change it?
I know the reasoning of both sides...
I'm not a Sabbath worshipper because I was brought up with Sunday worship
and it's difficult to change.
So it seems right somehow.
and it seems wrong somehow.
Pretty unlike me, right?

Yesterday I saw Sabbath fulfilled on Jesus. The Sabbath is about resting in God, putting Him first above work of any kind.
In Christ we enter the Sabbath rest eternally. We fulfil the Sabbath commandment each and every day. Our communion in the Holy Spirit is our reality, God first in everything.

Yes,,,of course I agree with this.
But God did create a day of rest...as an example to us, HE also rested.
It just bothers me that it's one of the commandments.....
and not just a sign of a Covenant....the Mosaic Covenant.
Signs of Covenants could be abolished but can a commandment be abolished?
OTOH,,,,Jesus DID resurrect of the FIRST day of the week.
As if ALL would be made new.
Beginning on that first day....all would change and be as HE wanted.
I've always found it interesting that the resurrection did not take place on a Saturday.

A day of rest is a day of change, a day of family, celebration, of being in relationship, and of doing other things one enjoys. Pastors are given another day off than sunday, so they can recover from all the attention.
Emotional peace and none involvement is hard. The commandment is we should take Gods day of rest, which now is eternal.
Our problem is now electricity, news, gas, travel, hospitals, water treatment, computer networks. They are all on and working round the clock.
Is this dishonour to the Lord, and not putting Him first, or just part of our diverse existence?
I would say the principle of rest is integrated into our lives, but it is how we express it that is our choice. So the sabbath is the shadow, each individual needs to work out how to find and express this rest and peace.
And as humans we need our day of rest, of doing other, which you discover if you try and be full on 7 days a week. You actually start to fall apart.

The Sabbath is not a commandment like the other ones that begin with "Thou shall not". Thou shall not are commands from God of things we are not to do, but the sabbath according to Genesis 2:1-3 is a day that God sanctified and set apart from the other days as a day of rest from all His work as He completed His work. The commandment says to only remember that day, or in other words reflect on all God created in six days and to keep it holy in your heart. The sabbath was not made for God, but God set it apart for a day for all to rest from all their weekly work as He did rest that day.
We read in the scriptures that there is to be no work of any kind done on the sabbath day according to Jewish law, but then we read in Matthew 12:1-13 the controversy over the sabbath and labor and the sabbath and healing as Jesus said it is lawful to do good on the sabbath.
Not to many notice this, but in Genesis 2:2 the seventh day is different from the other days that state evening and the morning were the numbering of each day of God's work. It says on the seventh day God set that day apart and that He rested from all His work on that day. Vs. 2 never mentions evening, but only says seventh day as through Jesus who is our day of rest to all who will by faith believe in Him as when Jesus ends His work fulfilling everything here on earth on the last day when He returns, then we will enter the evening of our final rest with Him and the Father when the New Jerusalem is ushered down where we will be with the Lord of the sabbath forever.

Love your last paragraph FHG....and you're right, not many notice that, I certainly didn't.
We could discuss the occasion where Jesus taught about doing good on the Sabbath....the Sabbath is for man, and not Vice Versa....but there's no need to right now.
What I would like to say is that regarding your idea of the THOU SHALL NOTS of the commandments....
The first 4 commandments are for God...no matter how they're worded they speak of what we owe to God.
The rest of for man and how we should treat each other.
So, remember to keep holy the Sabbath means simply to set that day apart for God.
God set apart the 7th day,,,not the first.
But not the 1st day has become the 7th day of rest....or it would make no sense to rest on the 1st day BEFORE any work of ours has begun and we don't need the rest.
I also understand about the resting in Jesus.
To be honest,,,I'm not going to be worrying about this since all my trust is in God.
Who knows the mistakes we're making! (I mean doctrinal mistakes).
I do, however, understand both sides. And, if it's possible, I agree with BOTH!
(with God all things are possible!! LOL)
