Saved by Grace Through Faith, Not by Works Part 1

I. Saved from what?

A. Saved from death.
1. The result of Adam’s sin is death for all mankind.
a. Sin separated Adam from God in Whom alone is Life.
b. Adam, by sin, became a creature who dies.
Romans 6:23a For the wages of sin is death

c. Adam passed that nature (being a creature who dies) on to all his descendants.
Romans 5:12 Therefore as sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned

2. The result of Jesus’ incarnation, death and resurrection is immortality of all mankind.
Romans 6:23b the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

a. By the incarnation of the Logos (the Word of God, the Son) God joined His divine
nature with the nature of created man; He united man with God.
b. In the crucifixion, Jesus died an unnatural death, not because of sin, as a human being.
c. By His resurrection, Jesus destroyed the power of death to hold mankind in the grave
where we would “return to dust.”
d. All of mankind will be resurrected
1Thes 4:16-17 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel's call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord.

e. Mankind will be resurrected immortal and incorruptible,
1Cor 15:52-54 Lo! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable nature must put on the imperishable, and this mortal nature must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: "Death is swallowed up in victory."

f. Believers will be eternally and intimately united with God, in Christ as the “body of
Christ” and the “bride of Christ.”
Eph 5:28-32 Even so husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no man ever hates his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." This mystery is a profound one, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church;

g. Our bodies will be changed to be like Jesus’ resurrected body
Phil 3:20-21 But our commonwealth is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power which enables him even to subject all things to himself.

h. Man’s greatest fear and greatest adversary is death, but Jesus has saved all of
mankind from death.
2 Ti 1:10b …our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

B. Saved from Hell?
No, saved from physical death.

1. Jesus has saved all of mankind will be saved from permanent, physical death by His
resurrection.

2. Some people will spend eternity with God in His kingdom and some will spend eternity
separated from God in hell, but, after the resurrection, nobody will ever again be subject
to physical death.

3. But there is a “second death” described in Revelation as a “lake that burns with fire and
sulfur. (Rev 21:8)

Mat 25:31-36, 40 (With God) When the Son of man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate them one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, and he will place the sheep at his right hand, but the goats at the left. Then the King will say to those at his right hand, “Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; or I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.”

Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.

Mat 25:41-43, 45 (to hell) Then he will say to those at his left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; for I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.

'Truly, I say to you, as you did it not to one of the least of these, you did it not to me.

John 5:28-29 (NKJV) … the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come forth—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

Ro 6:2-10 (NKJV) (God) will render to each one according to his deeds; eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek; but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

II. What is “Eternal Life”?

A. God alone has life by nature and it is eternal because God is eternal. (1Ti 6:16)

1. God gave life to Adam when He breathed life into him. (Gen 2:7)

2. God gave Adam the opportunity to have eternal life by placing the “Tree of Life” in the
garden where Adam could eat its fruit and live as long as he ate it.

3. When Adam sinned, he was cast out of the garden and no longer had access to the Tree of Life so, eternal life was no longer available to him.

4. All of Adam’s descendants have the life which Adam has transmitted to his descendants. It is a temporary physical life ending in death because our sin separates us from eternal life.

5. Physical, eternal life may be had only by being united to God and God accomplished that by uniting Himself (God the Logos) with man (John 1:14) and , by his death and resurrection, destroying the power of death, thereby giving mankind immortality after our resurrection. (1Cor 15:53-54; 2Ti 1:10)

6. Eternal life, then, is immortality combined with being in intimate union with God forever.

7. The “second death” is immortality combined with being separated from God forever. (Rev 20:14; 21:9)

B. Eternal life, then, is the combination of having been saved from physical death (as has all
mankind) and, in addition, being intimately and eternally united to God in Christ as the body of
Christ and the Bride of Christ.
2 Ti 1:10b … our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

Ro 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ro 8:1-2 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set me free from the law of sin and death.

Eph 5:31-32 "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." This mystery is a profound one, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church;

III. How does one “get” into eternal life?
A. It is a gift from God. (Romans 6:23b)
B. It is given by Grace. (Eph 2:5, 8; Act 15:11)
C. It is given to those who believe in Jesus. (John 3:16)
D. It is given to those who do the good works for which they were created.
(Eph 2:10, John 5:28-29; Ro 6:2-10; Mat 25:31-46)
E. It cannot be earned by doing good works but, it will not be given to anyone who does not do
good works. (John 5:28-29; Ro 6:2-10; Mat 25:31-46)

1. An analogy: No one “earns” life by breathing, but, if you do not breathe, you will not have life.
2. Being a Christian necessarily includes the fact that Jesus is your Lord, your King, and
your master. It is a Christian’s duty to obey his Lord. Those who obey are rewarded and
those who do not obey are cast into “the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash
their teeth.” (Mat 24:45-51; 25:14-30)

3. One cannot earn eternal life by doing good works. But neither will anyone be given
eternal life who does not do the good works that he was created in Christ to do and
which God prepared beforehand that he should walk in them, but does evil instead.
(Eph 2:10; Jas 4:17; 1Cor 6:9-10)

a. Sin separated Adam from God in Whom alone is Life.
I notice you provided no Scripture for 1a.

Contrary to your claim, Adam and Eve walked and talked with God after they sinned. What do you mean by "sin separated Adam from God"?

The difference post fall was they were ashamed of their sin. And God cursed them for the rest of their days of life. And limited their access to the tree so they died. Yet, God clothed them.

Genesis 3:8-12, 21 (LEB) Then they heard the sound of Yahweh God walking in the garden at the windy time of day. And the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden. And Yahweh God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he replied, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid because I am naked, so I hid myself.” Then he asked, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I forbade you to eat?” And the man replied, “The woman whom you gave to be with me—she gave to me from the tree and I ate.”
...
And Yahweh God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skin, and he clothed them

2. The result of Jesus’ incarnation, death and resurrection is immortality of all mankind.
Romans 6:23b the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This passage doesn't support your claim in 2. All mankind doesn't confess Jesus is Lord (unfortunately).

The claim is true via other passages. But 1 Thess 4:16-17 is speaking of those who "shall always be with the Lord", obviously as that's what it says. Do you think the lost will "always be with the Lord"?

Again, you apply a passage that speaks of the bodies of those who are Christ's as if all mankind belong to Christ/ Messiah. Unfortunately, the lost are...well lost to Christ.

Not to mention that 1 Cor 15:52-54 out-right contradicts your claim in 2. You said "The result of Jesus’ incarnation, death and resurrection is immortality of all mankind." Yet 1 Cor 15 proves mankind's bodies are not immortal even though Jesus' incarnation, death and ressurection has occurred.

1 Corinthians 15:23 But each in his own group: Christ the first fruits, then those who are Christ’s at his coming,

1 Cor 15 is about the ressurection of "those who are Christ's", not the lost's ressurection at the Judgment of the lost.

f. Believers will be eternally and intimately united with God, in Christ as the “body of
Christ” and the “bride of Christ.”
Eph 5:28-32 Even so husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no man ever hates his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." This mystery is a profound one, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church;

Umm, believers are already (not will be) united with God as the Text says; "we are members of His Body...

Yes our bodies will be changed. Yet, our commonwealth is (right now) in Heaven.

Saved by Grace Through Faith, Not by Works ...

This sounds as if it can be applied to all non believers. Non believers might say I am going to heaven but they might not believe on Christ. Many world religions have this idea...And that is why 'grace' is there...

I think its quite simple really;

We are dead in sins, and have no desire for the True God - Romans 3:10-18

God calls us and gives us faith - Ephesians 2:8-9

Through the faith given us, we then believe in Christ for our justification - Romans 4:4-8

And because we are justified, we receive His righteousness, shown in our fruit, because of obedience - Romans 6:13-18

Start to finish, God's work in us, no work of our own. We simply submit(believe and obey). That's it.

Its so easy a cave child can do it. :)

So is our submitting a work?

I suppose it does take action - I wouldn't call it a work though. Normally work is used to define something you are doing to earn something.

I would call it a response. Submission is where faith meets obedience.

So is our submitting a work?
It (submisson) caused me to sweat the first time. It got a little easier as I practiced it, but still it was difficult. It is only hard for me now to do now on those really difficult tasks. I sometimes even ask for help. That is, if I'm being smart about it. Sounds a lot like work. But the word "work" has it's connotations, especially if it's viewed as occuring independent from our Helper.

Trials and tribulations maybe???

Of course.
My question was in response to your comment: "Start to finish, God's work in us, no work of our own. We simply submit(believe and obey). That's it." (#8)

iakov the fool

Right. You said;
That sounds very much like God is the infinite puppeteer and mankind is a mindless thing without will.
IS that what you believe or have I got it wrong?

That's why I asked if you felt submission takes an act of the will. We submit to God's work in our life. Simple.
