Schools close due to Mayan Calendar and CT shootings.

Below is the letter and voice mail we recieved from our school district last night. Unbelievable! I asked my son about this and he was very surprised. He told me that kids actually believe that Friday is the end of the world and are planning on doing whatever they want to do because it doesn't matter.

And they call Christianity crazy stuff... What a sad state this world is in.

Biggest bummer is today was the last wrestling tournament for my son and it was a grudge match.....

P.S. I've put * for the name of the Superindendant and our school district.

Good evening.
I apologize for the timing of this message, but I have important
information to share with you.
Given the recent events in Connecticut, there have been numerous
rumors circulating in our district, and in neighboring districts, about
potential threats of violence against students. Additionally, rumors
connected to the Mayan calendar predicted end of the world on
Friday have also surfaced. These rumors of violence have been
thoroughly investigated and determined to be false. There have
been no credible threats made against any of our students.
However, these rumors have been a serious distraction for students,
teachers, administrators, and parents. Therefore, given the
significant disruption to the teaching and learning process, I have
decided, along with my fellow superintendents of *** County, to
cancel school for both Thursday, December 20th, and Friday,
December 21st. This includes all after school extracurricular
events, programs and athletic contests and practices. Although we
in the county are reluctant to cancel school because the rumors are
unsubstantiated, we feel it is the most appropriate decision given
the gravity of recent events and our present circumstances.
On behalf of the Board of Education, teachers, administrators, and
support personnel, I wish each of you a Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year. We look forward to working with your children when
school resumes on Monday, January 7th. Have a wonderful and
enjoyable break!!

It's really got the kids freaked out. Some of them really believe the end of the world is Friday. My son tried to tell them it's not the end of the world, but they don't believe in Christ. Most kids don't even know about Jesus.

Now there is true wisdom! Never thought of that!

I'm friends on facebook with a lot of our pre teens at church. You should hear all the chattter. to your point, they are good soldiers for the sake of Christ.

It's hilarious really. Though this filth and lies is the end result we end up with in an atheist society. "I believe in Science,- New Atheists" :hysterical

What is not hilarious though is the end is nigh green crowd. Making kids they are destroying the earth for playing with lego's, forcing them to think that their parents are evil if they don't recycle 100%, scaring them into thinking that they have no future because the ecosystem will collapse in 10-40 years (depending on which ludicrious study they are fed). Makind children think its more important to be green than a good person.

But the worst part is making people believe human beings are innherently evil and unnecessary carbon eaters, incredibly diminishing human value into a useless material construct.

This is very disheartening. I work mostly with late-teenaged people, and unfortunately several of them were believers in the 12/21/12 conspiracy. I'm very happy to be able to say they no longer believe that, and that I had a little something to do with it. I can't take all the credit, though, as I told them to go and research it for themselves, and they quickly came to the same conclusion.

It makes me downright furious that people can fall for something like this, but then again I also remember vividly the panic that Y2K caused. I would just like to share, for those of you who have and do try to approach those who believe the conspiracy from a Christian perspective, the approach I have used and (so far) had success with - for lack of a better phrase.

Some of the people I work with are Christians, some are not. I learned very quickly that the old addage "Those convinced against their will are of the same opinion still" is painfully accurate. Those who are not Christians cared nothing at all for anything even resembling a faith-based argument. Very well. Fight fire with fire and use their "logic-based" belief system against them, so to speak. A few simple facts, followed by their own research into those facts, has opened the eyes of all but three of my coworkers.

1.) The Mayan calendar, even the long count, is cyclical. It is a cycle. Period. Nothing more, nothing less. One cycle ends that means another begins, no different than us flipping our paper calendar from December to January. It is the end of the current cycle, true enough, but that means another begins.

2.) The biggest "proof" I've personally heard for the validity of the 12/21/12 Doomsday date is the "fact" that the sun and earth will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way. The truth of the matter is that it's simply an optical illusion. It will only appear that there's an alignment if you're standing on Earth. Were you able to place yourself anywhere else in the galaxy, you would see that there is no such alignment, and that the cosmos would be as they are just like every other day.

Noted physicist Michio Kaku has stated as much in a televized interview. Apologies for not being able to post a link, but I will edit this post as soon as I find it (it's been a few months since I watched the video).

I'm not sure where else to go with this. As I said it just angers me to a point that I really don't have words to describe. So I'll simply digress and end my rant. I hope someone finds my words helpful, and even though it's not necessarily right, I'd be lying if I said I'm not looking forward to the "I told you so's" I'll be spreading to a choice few Saturday morning.

You don't really think that any atheist would believe that the world was ending just because of an ancient calendar - do you? Be honest with yourself, you see just about anything as a another chance to have a pop at atheists. :yes

Mr. Aardverk, it's time for you to be honest with yourself.
In my short time on this forum, you've done everything to knock christianity.
Is your purpose for being here to put doubt in the minds of believers so that you can feel comfortable with what you believe?
Go ahead, tell me, and be honest.

That's a hell of an accusation allenwynne. Perhaps you should have a crack at backing it up. I have never 'knocked Christianity' I have always said that it is a good thing and that I wished I could become a firm believer again.

You demand answers but never seem to give any yourself. Now you seem to be demanding that I believe exactly as you do otherwise I must be some bad person intent on putting doubts into the minds of believers! Just stop and think for a few minutes allenwynne. If I have doubts, how do I get intelligent comment about my doubts unless I express them clearly, along with my reasons? Any thoughts on that allenwynne?

It can not have escaped your notice in the short period you have been here that Christians of all flavors argue with each other, probably far more than they argue with me. I clearly don't believe everything Christians do otherwise I would still call myself a Christian but I have had a great number of compliments, both public and private so I can't be all bad - can I? Maybe you need to take the log out of your eye.

One thing I will happily admit to is challenging hatred, prejudice, bullying and bigotry wherever I see it. Maybe you have not understood everything you have read or read as deeply as you should.

Now, don't just jump to conclusions and make silly accusations. Think carefully. Why do my doubts upset you? :chin

Unfortunately, not everyone seems capable of thinking for themselves ;)

It does seem that way sometimes yeah. But I've probably learned more about my faith as a result of being challenged than any other method.

Aardverk's evil hidden agenda :lol aside he was right with what he said.
The whole Mayan calendar apocalypse hoax was a mix of media excitement, internet subculture and doomsday scenario fascination many of us have. Most of it all was mere fun. A few lunatics (esoterics, new age people or conspiracists) took it seriously and CLAIMED science would confirm that on 12/21/2012 "something" "might" happen.
But never have I seen any seriously scientific prove for the coming end in 2012. Scientists aren't even in agreement about the date of the end of the Mayan calendar. No real Maya expert ever claimed the end of the last long count cycle equals the end of the world.
That story about the alignment of our sun and the galactic center is hogwash. Even if the galactic center, sun and earth would form a line on a certain day it would have no effects on us at all. And no real scientist would claim it would.
So an atheists believing in science had just as little reason to be afraid of 12/21 than a Christian believing in God.
And for atheists it would be hard to find a naturalistic reason why one nation should have forseen the apocalypse. How should they have known, maybe a time traveler from the future paid a visit and told them? :D
That's what Aardverk was trying to say, I guess.
I'm not saying that to make anyone doubt, since I'm a christian myself.

Aardverk's evil hidden agenda :p aside he was right with what he said................

Spot-on Claudya :thumbsup

Sadly some people see, Christian: 'No', in the left hand margin and jump to silly conclusions :gah

No of course I don't believe all atheists think this way. My father is atheist and is completely rational and logical, same goes for my uncle, grandfathers and many friends. This green hysteria man made climate change will destroy the world and some indian tribe did not complete their calander the world is going to end stuff would be avoided with a faith based society. Though of course there are bad christians who go out in the media and make christianity look bad, but truly they are popular in the media for about a day and then go away. These secular end is nigh have been with us for decades.

And you, you specifically avoided my comment that I was talking about new-atheists. You are just looking for excuse to have a pop at me - don't you? Come'on be honest with yourself ;)

Anyway, back on topic lol! I was prodding my kid on this again and yes, there were kids at his school who actually believed the end of the world was coming! He spent the night at a friends house that night, and as a gag, at midnight they sent out text messages to all their friends that said something to the effect that it was the end of the world lol! Ahh, to be a kid again! Full of life and excitement.

If that is what you meant, you should have said that.

Not at all. I respond to anyone who says something silly. :lol :topictotopic

Aardverk,
Admit it, you thought the world was going to end and everyone was going to turn into Zombies. Yeah, that's right buddy, I'm on to ya. Your just a big scardy cat disguised as some tough guy. You know you were looking out your window at midnight just waiting for it to happen.
