Searching for the truth

Hey, I am very new at this. For just under a year now, I've had niggling thoughts and questions about believing in God. I WANT to believe, but I do not know what I need to do. My friend gave me a prayer to start with. I used it and nothing's happened. Do I get a sign that he wants me and that he will be there for me?

I am hoping to friend people on here so they can help me with my journey in religion. I know it will not be easy. My family are NOT religious, but I have been baptised/christened and received my Holy Communion. I was interested in God when I was still in primary school but was scared/didnt know what to do

You cannot expect something to happen instantly. Christianity is all about FAITH , ie. believing God even when you don't see, feel or hear anything. God often works "behind the scenes"... He seems to be fond of playing hide and seek, but promises that when we seek, we shall find Him, not physically or literally, but through His written Word of God which is the Bible, and through answers to prayers.

You can start by checking out a Biblically-grounded church ... ask around, pray and see where God leads you. I will pray with you.

I think the first thing is to not think of Christianity as a "religion". A religion has a long list of rules that you have to do. But being a Christian isn't like that. It's not a religion, it's a relationship with Jesus. And like I just said to someone else, sometimes it takes a moment of clarity or a life changing event for you to really feel the presence of God. That's what happened with me, and I have never doubted God's existence since. Well, let's clarify, I never really doubted His existence, I just felt no closeness to Him at all b/c I felt like He didn't love me, and when I prayed it seemed like I was talking to thin air. Maybe you feel that way too. And as for what you said about wanting to believe but not knowing what to do, all you have to do is believe. Look at the world around you and see the evidence. Look at events in your own life and see Gods hand in them, even events that seem horrible. God works in everyone's life a different way, and it can be hard and frustrating. And I've been looking for the same thing as you, friends that can help me with my journey and my relationship with Jesus. That's what Christian friends are SUPPOSED to do. :wave

Confusedgirl90,

The good news is that if you go after faith and a knowledge of God with ernestness, you will succeed. But there is something called preparing the way of the Lord, and it's important that, "first in the natural, then in the spiritual," you do your part by learning some things on the way to faith.

But time may be short, so here are some relevant scriptures you would eventually find, if you searched the scriptures looking for wisdom by which you would come to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
(all NKJV)

1)Romans 2:6-7. He will "Render ...eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality." Make glory, honor, and immortality your ultimate goal. God made you to do glorious things. Go for it!

2)Prov 23:23. "Buy the truth, and do not sell it. Also wisdom and instruction and understanding." Spend time, pay attention, invest your treasure, into these things. Find an older woman to mentor you in "rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Tim 2:15)" Your first baby steps from where you are will be choosing to learn how to discern what is true amoung the ideas that will come your way. There are many stumbling blocks, delusions, and deceptions "out there."

3) Prov 18:21 "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit." You will get from where you are (Going after the truth with all the energy you can muster) to where you are going (Glory!) by bridling your tongue (James 1:26), speaking God's words, not your own, to talk yourself into success.
Daddy, send Your Holy Spirit to make every choice this child of Yours declares become a part of her being!
