Selling churches

Our congregation enjoys a joint fellowship with another country church congregation about 5 miles away. It has been that way for the entire 150+ year history of the two churches. The story as I understand it is the membership of the first church, Salem Lutheran, was getting too large and with the travel distance and the number of pasture gates that had to be crossed, it was decided to form a new church to split the congregation into two and make it easier to accommodate the numbers and travel distance. This was before automobiles so travel distance was a bigger concern than it is today.

Some time later, as the rural population dropped and congregations got smaller we got together with a third small church to help reduce costs for all so we became a 3-point parish with one shared pastor. The third church was about 10 miles away and the pastor provided Sunday service each week for them and we continued to alternate our worship services.

Recently, that third church membership dropped to the point where they were no longer able to remain solvent so they have decided to close the doors. 😞

Meanwhile, our two churches' memberships have dropped as well with each church having a current membership of about 50 people, but so far we are still in decent shape.
