Greetings to my fellow believers and those who quest for greater meaning in the universe that surrounds us.
I am currently retired and writing a historical novel (more later). My vocation to this point in my life has involved various aspects of secular law. One of my favorite avocations, however, has been the study of the Word of God. In the last 30ish years I have moderated weekly Christian study groups at the churches where I have been a member (I have lived on the west as well as east coast). I enjoy studying with others, discovering greater insights in the Biblical story by understanding the cultural context in which it occurs. For instance, many rich insights into Christ's teaching that would have been well understood by his audience are better appreciated today with the historical background. All of which led me to my current writing project.
My novel starts in the intertestiment period with the events leading up to the Jewish civil war of 67 BC. It involves the events, personalities, and philosophies of characters from Rome, Egypt, Armenia, Greek Syria, the Arabian peninsula, and of course Judaea itself. It was the era of Julius Caesar and Sparticus, Cleopatra's father, and the burgeoning spice/incense/silk trade (a multibillion dollar a year business in our terms) that was controlled by the Nabataean Arabs. I am trying to make it as historically accurate as possible and yet inject the immediacy of a novel.
I am happy to spend some time talking about the book but I primarily joined to learn about and discuss other subjects. For instance, Cyberjosh has something on Sodom & Gomorrah I want to ask about.
I look forward to discussions, encouragement, and insights.
