I'll give you an example: One person says that this is what MT. 23:10 means; "And you can be called teacher because there are many teachers besides Christ."
Another person says that this is what Jesus means; "And do not be called teacher for you have one teacher and that is the Christ."
Now since God isn't divided, he will not tell us different or opposite things. Thus, both interpretations can't be right. So which one do you think is right and why? :gah
If we are supposed to take it literally, just as it is written, as you suggest they are both correct. I think you just pointed out a great example of why scripture needs to be discussed and interpretted. You cannot often times take it just on face value. You have to dig a bit. I don't think most folks are digging to make it mean something it doesn't as their primary intent. They are seeking to understand.
If one doesn't understand scripture, he has to look to other scripture to understand it. Since Jesus knows more than any man, there is zero reason not to take him literally. His words also correspond with the myriad of other verses I quoted about not trusting in man.
So since there's zero scripture telling us to put our trust in human beings, especially secular human beings and much scripture telling is not to, then there's zero reason to not take Jesus literally in that passage.
