Exodus 34:6-7
The Lord said to Moses.
6Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in loving kindness and truth;
7who keeps loving kindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”

Apparently there's a difference.
I'd say the order is: sin, transgression, iniquity.

SIN

The true meaning is "missing the mark". John 3:4
Falling short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
The Greek word for “sin” is hamartia, an archery term for “missing the mark.”
And which mark do we miss? The reason for our entire life....our relationship with God.
God put us here to choose HIM, when we don't, we don't just make mistakes and sin...we also turn our back on the very God that made us for the purpose of loving Him.
In Christian theology
Main article: Hamartiology
Hamartia is also used in Christian theology because of its use in the Septuagint and New Testament. The Hebrew (chatá) and its Greek equivalent (àµaρtίa/hamartia) both mean "missing the mark" or "off the mark".[9][10][11]

There are four basic usages for hamartia:
  1. Hamartia is sometimes used to mean acts of sin "by omission or commission in thought and feeling or in speech and actions" as in Romans 5:12, "all have sinned".[12]
  2. Hamartia is sometimes applied to the fall of man from original righteousness that resulted in humanity's innate propensity for sin, that is original sin.[13] For example, as in Romans 3:9, everyone is "under the power of sin".[14]
  3. A third application concerns the "weakness of the flesh" and the free will to resist sinful acts. "The original inclination to sin in mankind comes from the weakness of the flesh."[15]
  4. Hamartia is sometimes "personified".[16] For example, Romans 6:20 speaks of being enslaved to hamartia (sin).

source: Hamartia - Wikipedia

Examples of sin:
Evil thoughts, adultery, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, pride, heresies, envy.
Mark 7:21-22
Galatians 5:19-21

There are sins of commission, omission, thought.
Man has always sinned. Each one of us is responsible for our own sin.

TRANSGRESSION

Before Moses was given the Law (the 10 commandments) there was no law.
If there is no law, how could there be sin?

Sin has always existed. Men have always broken the laws of God.
Romans 5:12-15
12Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
13for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
15But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.

The transgression spoken of in verse 15 is the commandment Adam broke...the commandment God gave him to not eat of the tree of knowledge.

So transgression is to break a law...to cross the line.

But Romans 5 tells us that there were no laws until God gave them to Moses.
In this way, the persons that lived in this time period were not imputed sins to their account, but they still sinned. As Romans 1:18-32 tells us, man always knew when they were breaking a law,,,be it of their tribe, their government, and even their God if they believed because of their conscience --- man has always had a God-given conscience.
Romans 1:21, 28, 32. Verse 13 above.

Although these persons did not sin as Adam did by transgressing the law, verse 14, they still sinned and they still died because of the effects of Adam's sin.

After Moses was given the commandments, men transgressed when they sinned because now there was a law. If we run a red light when there is a law, we transgress that law and are held responsible for it. If there is no law, we still make the mistake since passing a red light is dangerous. The difference with this example is that God has much higher standards than we do and if we sinned even before the law, there were still consequences to be paid...Distance from God in this life will also cause distance from God in the next life.

INIQUITY

If sin and transgression are continued and become a life style, they become iniquity...this causes spiritual death.
Isaiah 59:2
But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.

Jeremiah 14:10
10Thus says the LORD to this people, “Even so they have loved to wander; they have not kept their feet in check. Therefore the LORD does not accept them; now He will remember their iniquity and call their sins to account.”

The O.T. also speaks about the iniquities of the fathers being passed on to the sons up to the third and fourth generation.
Exodus 34:7
7who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”

Iniquities are passed on,,,not imputed to the children and grandchildren.
How?
1. The children hate God.
Exodus 20:5
5“You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,

2. High blood pressure, alcoholism, jealousy, etc. are passed down from generation to generation.

3. James speaks to this:
James 1:15
15Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.

Sin
Transgression
Iniquity

First I want to say great post wondering :thumbsup

There is only one part that I do not agree with in how it is interpretative by others that say there were no laws until God gave them to Moses as they say this is what Romans 5:13 means. Not to many know about the Noahic Commandments God gave to Noah after the flood and the again to Moses. I just learnt about this this year in my studies. Other than this, again great post.

www.jewfaq.org

Noahic (Noah) Commandments are seven commandments first given to Adam by God before the flood and brought to remembrance by God to Noah after the flood, which are binding on both Jew and Gentile. The seven make up the first parts of the ten that God gave to Moses on Mt Sinai in Exodus 20. Below is a comparison list of the seven and the full ten which are all a part of the 613 laws given to Moses as some were for the Hebrews pertaining to the rituals of the Temple, sacrifices, festivals, Torah, Kohanim and Levites, the King and the Nazarite and then there are the existing moral laws (commandments) for all, Jew and Gentile to follow. Christ did not come to destroy all the laws, but to fulfill the parts of the Temple and sacrifices, Matthew 5:17-20.

Noahic Laws:
Not to worship idols.
Not to curse God.
To establish courts of justice.
Not to commit murder.
Not to commit adultery or sexual immorality.
Not to steal.
Not to eat flesh torn from a living animal.

Mt. Sinai Laws:
You shall have no other gods before Me.
You shall not make idols.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not murder.
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet.

Part of the ten laws broken down to various commands within one law:
Other gods and idols are as one not to worship, but broke down into two commands
Remember the Sabbath was added to the ten commandments by God as a remembrance of all God did in six days (Gods timing) and rested on the seventh, Genesis 2:1-3; Matthew 12:1-13
To establish courts of justice was only given to Noah for the new generations to come after the flood
Honor your father and mother was not given to Noah, but was added to the ten commandments by God as the generations grew
Not to covet was added to the ten commandments by God, but broke down into seven commands as your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.

I do know about the Noahic Laws and was once in contact with a woman who actually practiced this religion...

It's a branch of Judaism that began with Noah after the flood.

Also Judaism is to the law as Catholicism is to the Way.

The law of Moses was from God.

Judaism is what the law was turned into by corrupt Jews, that mixed the word of God with the traditions of men.

Man has always added to the law to justify themselves within their own transgressions to God's law.

The NT definition of sin is transgressing the Law:

1 John 3:

4Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
When 1 John 3 was written, the law already existed. So, yes, the law was transgressed.

The law became active in the book of Exodus...the 10 Commandments.
There were also many other laws at that time, about 1,500 before Jesus was born, but they were civil and ceremonial laws and were abolished by the time 1 John was written. The moral law will always remain because God is a moral being, He IS morality.

We should remember also that as for_his_glory has already stated, there was a law even before the formal law was given to man --- it is known today as the natural law of God. We also have the Noahic Law as per her post no. 2, which is very interesting and to which some persons hold.

There are laws (commandments) of God that were especially written just for the Hebrews pertaining to the rituals of the Temple, sacrifices, festivals, Torah, Kohanim and Levites, the King and the Nazarite. Then there are the existing moral laws (commandments) for all of us to still follow as in prayers and blessings, love and brotherhood. The poor and unfortunate, treatment of the Gentiles, Marriage, divorce and family. Forbidden sexual relations, business practices, employees and servants. Vows, oaths, swearing, Court and Judicial procedures. Injuries and damages, property and property rights, criminal laws. Prophecy, idolatry and all its practices as the moral laws (commandments) keep us in line with the will of God. We need to present ourselves a vessel of honor that God delights in as we allow the light of Christ shine in us and through us. This is a testimony of Gods grace and mercy as it is not ourselves that do any good thing, but Gods Spirit working in us and through us as we surrender our will to that of Gods will to be done.

Morality in God is His greatest commandment of love as we treat others as we want others to treat us. God is love and wants us to love and treat others as He loves and treats us.

Matthew 22:35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Exodus 34:6-7
The Lord said to Moses.
6Then the LORD passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in loving kindness and truth;

A lying tongue denotes one that lies as a way of life.

I agree with much of the above.

I would only ask: What does it mean to be unrighteous? Or, what does it mean to be righteous?

What does it mean to be unrighteous? Or, what does it mean to be righteous
righteousness only comes through Christ he is our righteousness to be righteous is same as justified unrighteous would be the opposite

What is righteousness and what does it mean to be righteous?

Righteousness is the perfect holiness of Christ. It is an essential attribute to the character of God; quite literally meaning “One who is right”. Think of it as the polar opposite of sin. To commit sin is to go against God’s design for our lives, therefore righteousness is the only living standard that is acceptable for us to stand before the Father. The wages of sin is death, but in the path of righteousness is life, and in its pathway there is no death. (Proverbs 12:28)

I used to think righteous living had more to do with behavioral modification than heart transformation. Outward appearance of holiness was what mattered to me, rather than Spirit-filled change. I thought that if I tried to stop cussing as much and stop watching rated R movies, then that meant I was living righteously.
{ i think we can all say that we all have been guilty of this at one time or another }

While those are good and righteous works, the more I read the Bible, the more I learned that I had it backwards. Righteousness actually produces those works, not the other way around.

A lying tongue denotes one that lies as a way of life. will lead to other sins .my whole point is when we categorize sin. were saying that there are some sins that aint that bad

King James Dictionary

Unrighteousness

UNRIGHTEOUSNESS, n. unri'chusness. Injustice a violation of the divine law, or of the plain principles of justice and equity wickedness. Unrighteousness may consist of a single unjust act, but more generally, when applied to persons, it denotes an habitual course of wickedness. Romans 1:6 . 2 Corinthians 6 .

{ i think we can all say that we all have been guilty of this at one time or another }

Righteousness is the same as Justified.
Because righteousness simply means to be RIGHT WITH GOD.
If we're justified, we are right with God - so that explanation is a good one.

And you're right about behavioral modification too.
Our behavior can only change if our heart changes.
In Ezekiel 36:26 God says I WILL GIVE YOU A NEW HEART AND PUT A NEW SPIRIT IN YOU AND I WILL REMOVE THE HEART OF STONE.

It's this new heart that makes us not WANT TO SIN.
But, for those reading along, there is no sinless perfection in this life.
However, our new heart will make us sin less and less and make us more aware of sin.

As to sins being "that bad"...I've posted some verses showing that there are degrees of sin.
However, I think you mean that to God all sin is sin...this I would agree with.

we simply can not say one sin is different all sin must be confessed to God .he already knows the confessing part is for us. a ct of humbleness opposite of pride
OK. I understand what you're saying.
Let's just say that I'd rather you lied to me than if you killed me.
I think even our unknown sins should be confessed to God.
