slow computer start up

John,s computer starts very slow...

maybe 30-40 minutes before he can, quickly run around eBay "that is about all he does"

Windows xp


How do i remove stuff from the start up? How do i even know what is in start up?

adobe photo shop
unused office stuff
etc


I know about defrag
and disk clean up but only the very basics
 
To see what is running at startup, go to start,and in the search box, type "msconfig" then when that window opens up, click on the startup tab, and have a look see, at what is running at startup and in the back ground.
 
all kinds of stuff that read like Greek!

Lewis could i benefit with a registry cleaner? Not even sure what that is ??
 
I don't think a registry cleaner will disable unnecessary startup programs. For those, it is usually best to manually or womanually :) disable them yourself. I don't recall with XP but in Vista from Control Panel I click on Administrative Tools and choose System Configuration. This requires administrative privileges. Once System Configuration opens I click on the Startup tab and from there you can enable or disable programs you don't think you need. Just be careful because if you disable the wrong thing you may lose some functionality.
 
Reba if your registry is dirty it can cause problems, tell me what operating system you are using. More than likely it is the stuff that you have running at your startup. If you are to scared to disable things, take it to a shop and get your rig tuned up, I wish that I was near you, because I would do it for free. but just to tune it up should not cost ,more than 50 bucks. Because the way you talk, I would not trust you doing it.

That is correct,just the tower, and tell them to blow the dust out of it and clean the fans. And that way your rig will live a long time. Dirty fans can also slow down your rig because it causes a lot of heat which is a CPU killer.And tell them not to make any other changes unless they call you first, and then you can tell one of us who knows computers what they said.

Reba, the msconfig that Lewis mentioned is a good idea, to dsable some startup programs, I woudln't tell you what to disable over the internet. See if someone who lives near you, or a family member can check that out, becasue that should help a lot.
 
Here is my plan

i will try a free registry cleaner..... if it dont work then i pack the tower up and take it to town...

I looked at misconfig like Lewis said :eeeekkk:eeeekkk i have no idea what those things are...

I could spot a few. I figure if the software is free and it works? good if not then it is a long day in town... Town is about an hour away......

His computer has systems restore so i wont get killed....:lol
 
How much RAM is there and are there many, or any, files directly on the desktop? Everything on the desktop should be links. Putting actual files on the desktop loads them into memory at startup. My mom does this on her ancient computer that has 256 MB of RAM and complains that it is slow. Umm, yeah, there is a reason...

It is only one possibility.
 
Clearing out your cookies and temporary files is also a good idea. You'll probably need to enable hidden folders to see them.

I just turn my keyboard over and give it a good shake and a couple of taps. What's left of the cookies usually comes out.

If only! Actually, I did do this just last week at work after I tried to get a crumb off the side of a key and it fell in. I concluded that I eat too much at my desk. A lot of stuff came out.

Yeah, I know. I'm no help! :lol A person is down and out and I just mess with them. :D

Seriously, the advice given so far seems reasonable. Usually there is too much starting up because everyone and their brother thinks that their program you installed should automatically start up at boot. That always made me mad. Then you have to find their options to check off "don't start up when computer boots".

And Microsoft is resource hoggish to begin with which normally slows things down. Ever notice that computers are getting bigger and faster and yet they aren't? Bill gates likes to take every sports car and run it at it's highest RPM no matter how much more they increase it so-to-speak. This was one of Vista's main flaws, and then I hear they trimmed it down somewhat on Windows 7. The other OS's don't do that as much, but then they have less bells and whistles. So that's the price to pay with Microsoft's extra bells and whistles---- occasional slow-downs, incompatibilities and of course the viruses. If one can live with that (I can't), then go for it.
