Snopes exposed for disseminating false information. Isn’t Snopes.com known for supposedly fact-checking items in the news to expose false information?

That's not a fact-checking article. Snopes cites evidence when they fact-check an article.

That aside, I note the major issue in that article is the lumping of all creationists together. Yes, there are some forms of creationism that are conspiracy theories. Those will show themselves by arguing for a worldwide conspiracy of scientists to hide the truth or to suppress creationists. Or they will claim that evolutionary theory is the invention of Satan. Those are conspiracy cults.

Obviously, not all creationists are like that. One creationist cult that we can identify is the Unification Church sometimes called "the Moonies" after their founder, Rev. Moon who fancied himself as an improvement on Jesus Christ.

Haeckel’s name appears on the Answers in Genesis website 92 times. He is also the subject of a lengthy chapter in Jonathan Wells’ Icons of Evolution; Science or Myth?. This book, which even has its own high school study guide, was what first convinced me, back in 2013, that creationism was a conspiracy theory.

It is a splendid example of creationist tactics, using long-rectified shortcomings (such as those in early studies on Darwinian evolution in peppered moths, in response to changing colours following reduced pollution) to imply that the entire science is fraudulent. Wells has a real PhD in biology, a PhD acquired with the specific goal of “destroying Darwinism” – meaning evolution science – from the inside.

Wells is a senior fellow at the Discovery Institute, a conservative thinktank which promotes creationism under the banner of “Intelligent Design”, and is also linked to other conspiracy theories, such as claims that the consensus on climate change is bogus, and that last November’s US presidential election was stolen.

Unfortunately, AIG sometimes indulges in such foolishness...

According to Answers in Genesis, evolution science is a work of Satan, while former US Congressman Paul Broun has described it as “a lie straight from the pit of hell”.

The smoking gun for the Discovery Institute's conspiracy to "destroy evolution" as Rev. Moon ordered is found here:

The Wedge strategy can be divided into three distinct but interdependent phases, which are roughly but not strictly chronological. We believe that, with adequate support, we can accomplish many of the objectives of Phases I and II in the next five years (1999-2003), and begin Phase III (See "Goals/ Five Year Objectives/Activities").
Phase I: Research, Writing and Publication
Phase II: Publicity and Opinion-making
Phase III: Cultural Confrontation and Renewal
Governing Goals

  • To defeat scientific materialism and its destructive moral, cultural and political legacies.
  • To replace materialistic explanations with the theistic understanding that nature and human beings are created by God.

The Wedge Document was meant only for the insiders of the conspiracy, but was accidentally sent out to a print shop with other material for copying. Someone in the shop kept a copy of the document and sent it out to others. And the conspiracy was exposed. The public stance of the group was that they were entirely scientific in their approach and had no religious axes to grind. The document makes it clear that they were hiding their real agenda.
