So God became man so we could become God?

Have you heard someone say that before?
That God became human so we could become divine.
It's a thought provoking statement.
Is it right though? Do you agree?
I'm not sure I do.

I don't agree with that. It's possible that they based the idea on 2 Pet. 1:4 that says we become partakers of divine nature. But I think this is misunderstood. It doesn't make us divine, but rather "partakers" means that we receive from God's divine nature, and that makes us godly.

The Eastern Orthodox churches teach that idea, and it's called 'deification.' Except the way they seem to describe it is like my conclusion, that we become godly people in character, not gods. But there might be controversies among them, as I am not widely read in their circles.

If you want to know more about it, here's a good wiki link that has quotes from famous Christian writers.
Although I respect most of those writers, I do not agree with everything they wrote, and this is one thing I definitely do not agree with them about.

Thanks. I'm interested in EO.

I agree as when you read the full context below you will see this. There is no one divine other than God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. We still live in a corruptible body and are yet mortal until the day Christ returns and then we will be perfect, 1 Corinthians 15:50-58. It is only those who are Spiritually born again from above and baptized in the Holy Spirit that are Christ own as He will loose none of His own.

2Pe 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
2Pe 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
2Pe 1:5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
2Pe 1:6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
2Pe 1:7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.

2Pe 1:8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2Pe 1:9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
2Pe 1:10 Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

We are not God. We don't become God. We are however 'sons of God'. Our Father is God. We are of Him. His genes run through us.
