Speaking of Hamburgers....

I think a rightly made hamburger is actually healthy.

1) Ground beef from the butcher (meat is bad only if animals were fed weird stuff)
2) Whole grain roll (you can make this yourself since breads from the store are processed)
3) A salad on top, i.e. tomatoes, lettuce, onions and pickles (cucumbers)
4) mayo --- mayo is basically eggs, oil and vinegar. These ingredients are all good for you. Again, there are recipes to make mayo on the Internet from basic ingredients if you want to avoid the processed kind.

If you are "watching the carbs" type of person, you can replace the roll with big sheets of lettuce, but in reality, if you make your own bread, you can skip out on the corn syrup additives like store-bought rolls have and since it's from grain I don't believe it's bad for you.

Now, who will challenge that these ingredients are unhealthy? So, this summer grill 'em burgers and enjoy!

did you list the fact you have to own the cow that you have butchered? or know someone that does?

while i agree that is more healthy, its not feasible for city folk,ie lewis in philly. me i could do that. but for me to buy a cow and butcher him will cost me about 3 usd a pound in the end.

saving money isnt the idea here as you wont.there is another option if you have a local butchery near by or know someone that goes by one.

Jason, I'll raise the cow, if you pay the costs of butchering and shipping the meat to you...our beef is nice and lean, they are feed nothing but grass and alfalfa/grass mix. We don't put any hormones or anything in our beef.

One disclaimer, as do most of the ranchers/farmers around here, we do use a herbicide in the early Spring to keep the skeleton weed at bay...but it's certified to not have any harmful effects on the cattle or their meat. The upside is, because we aren't "organic" we don't have sky-high prices.

I'm with you, Tim...good quality beef, trimmed of fat and broiled or grilled, is quite healthy!

oh i have tasted butchered beef fresh from the farm before.:yes the same with free range eggs and also pork.

yes pork.

I have to laugh about "free range" eggs....if people only knew what chickens eat when they can eat whatever they want....

:verysick

OK Handy, you can raise the cow, but I have a confession---- I'm a closet cow-tipper, so if it's laying over you know why.
