How was it John did not recognise Jesus - their mothers were cousins and lived not far apart and they must have met at least once a year in Jerusalem - twinc

Why would you assume that John actually saw Jesus once a year in Jerusalem? Where is it stated that Jesus' parents took him there every year?

it behoved all Jews to try and do so and being en route they would probably have dropped in to see them, especially if they were absent - twinc

Ok, I am trying to understand what you are saying. Do you mean to say that Mary, Joseph, and Jesus would stop by the house of Zacheriah, Martha, and John, even though it is empty because they had already left for Jerusalem?

why complicate things - they would probably rendezvou on the way there or call in on the way back if they were not there - twinc

How was it John did not recognise Jesus
I've no doubt in my own mind that John and Jesus were childhood pals and knew each other very well in adulthood. I mean; come on now: they never saw each other or visited each other's homes even once in 30 years?!

The gist of the story is: in all those 30 years; John had not a clue that his cousin was the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world; nor that he was the Son of God with the power to baptize people with the Holy Spirit. How that must have all come as a shock to John that one of his own junior cousins outranked him all along and he had never guessed it!

This could also have to do with the fact that Jesus spent 40 days fasting in the desert. I wonder if that did anything to His appearence.

Jesus' temptation in the wilderness occurred after John said he did not know that his cousin Jesus was the Messiah.

Scripture does does not say that John did not know Jesus as his cousin. All it says is that John did not know Him, and there is a suggestion that John did not know his cousin Jesus was the Messiah. In John 1:31, we learn that John knew he was to baptize with water and that the Messiah would be made known to Israel through him. Then verse 33 (John 1:33) says that John knew that the descending of the Holy Spirit was the sign by which He would know the Messiah.

John did not know that his cousin Jesus was the promised Messiah until it was time for Jesus to begin His ministry. Even as John sat in prison, he still wasn't sure Jesus was the Messiah, but had to ask for confirmation. It's not a big deal, but points to the fact that Jesus did not fit the template of what the people expected their savior to be, rather He was what God knew He must be. Jesus own brother did not accept Jesus as his Messiah until after the resurrection.
