Sunburned Kids (more contradictions)

First of all, we had this story last month when a NJ mother was accused by the school officials of burning her kid in a tanning bed (but the mother said the girl got the burn in the sun ... let's give her the benefit of the doubt for now). Either way, the school was the whistle-blower for that poor, burned kid.

Now, here's an irate mother who is screaming about the school's sunscreen ban when her daughter got all burned in the sun.

So............. let me get this right. A NJ mother is "simply awful" for letting her girl burn in the sun (after all, she should have used sunscreen on her kid!!!) and the school authorities reported her and got government all involved and meanwhile another school system allows a child to be burned because they ban sunscreen and this is OK???

Let's get this right, now. The issue is not about protecting a child from sunlight (even though I believe sunlight is beneficial). The issue is that the schools in conjunction with government want to tell parents how to raise their kids but if the kid is going to get burned, mutilated, abused or whatever, the school can call that right because "they are the ones in charge". Highly, highly politically charged.

Honestly, I've never seen such an idiotic, contradictory, power hungry, and uppity generation so full of themselves as this one in charge today. It would be totally hilarious if it wasn't so scary that this is what's in power today. Incredible. :nono2 I'm glad my kids are past that point, but I feel sorry for my grandkids' generation. They won't know freedom or how to think for themselves. Everything will be regulated by this clueless know-it-all crowd in politics, medical fields, pharmaceutical, etc.

Sun ilight is beneficial, since your body requres sun light to synthesize vitamin D. However, excessive sun exposure has been strongly correlated with skin cancer. I work in the medical field, and I see it all the time.

I saw those articles as well... and was thinking along the same lines. The school can involve government authorities if parents let their children get sunburned... but they can allow the kids to get sunburned themselves?...

Yep... I'm agreeing with you, Tim.

As far as over the counter suntan lotion having the potential for allergic reactions.... I think most parents will know if their kid is allergic to sunscreen... by the time kids are in school, they're pretty aware of what they're allergic to. If there no mention of the allergy on the kid's records and if the kid says, "No, I'm not allergic, I use sunscreen all the time"... then the benefit of sunscreen far, far outweighs the risks. Sunscreen is a great thing... allows people like me to be outdoors. Without sunscreen, I'd never be able to go outside, I'd be just as burned as those poor little girls were.

And I still can get over that that poor woman in NJ is still dealing with this, when all the adults at the tanning location are in agreement that her daughter was never in the tanning booth with the mom, just at the salon.

You are so right. It's gotten completely out of control.

My daughter broke her arm TWICE last year, both times at school on the playground. :bigfrown
I must say though, where we live we have a great school and I like the people running it. They seem to use common sense more than what I've seen in others.
