supplements?!?!?!

ok. i take -lots- of supplements. not because I'm 'cool' or whatever, but because I got into Orthomolecular (high doses of common vitamins, minerals, plus additional antioxidants, pharmaceuticals as prescribed by a physician) over 10 years ago. Now?

long, long, long story...I'm -surprisingly- healthy, which I think is more an act of extreme grace from on high than any magical mystery vitamin cure. having said that...

-now that I've been made healthy- , I do think supplements help...well, help -me- , at least. I now think its not so much that the supplements treat or cure anything, its more like...

they 'top off' my daily non-drowsy antihistamine and my prescribed psych medication. with the psych stuff, i seem to have stabilized on way, way, way less medication (in terms of total dosage, number of prescribed drugs) than I think would be the case if I had not chosen to keep on with the Orthomolecular.

plus side: fewer prescription drugs, better quality sleep, less severe anxiety (I'm still a rather nervous creature...), less intense allergies, and...somehow, even my blood pressure registers within the normal range, and I was once so anxiety-ridden and such that my (probably already higher than ideal) blood pressure would ramp up, when measured by professionals (real term, used by a nurse once: 'white glove phobia').

downside: i dunno. some people think im nuts. parents are anti-(most) supplements, and keep warning me that something dreadful is bound to happen...eventually. lol. :-( im glad they care, of course. :)

right now, I"m trying to get my daily vitamin C intake up to 20 grams. -some- of the Orthomolecular 'experts' view vitamin C as the primary, gotta have it, must mega-dose it vitamin. some clinics do massive vitamin C infusions, which...think is fascinating, when it's other people. I'd really rather -not- have 75 grams of vitamin C solution put directly into my veins.

I also take loads of b-complex, vitamin E (fun fact: vitamin E has been studied in cases of people with facial tics from long term exposure to antipsychotics. data is mixed, but it seems to be better at preventing things from getting worse, possibly preventing the disorder in general, than at treating the tics once they're established...), and now I've added rhodiola and ashwagandha, to help me simmer down and not get so surly and such...limited data on both in severe mental illness, with conventional treatments. so far, so good.

so...ramble, ramble...anyone taking supplements, for whatever indications? helpful? pointless? not really sure?

if interested in Orthomolecular, check this out: www.doctoryourself.com

it is free, etc., and...I dunno, I am doing their protocol (with prescribed stuff) for mental probs. not a modern day miracle, but my mood+anxiety is much, much better. I do think they should be wary about "drug free treatment" for severe cases, though.

ok. thanks. :)

I don't dive deep into orthomolecular therapy, but I do agree in general that nutrition plays a huge role in our health. If you want a good all-encompassing nutrient booster, I'd recommend an organic plant-based prenatal supplement. Prenatal supplements don't come with any "girl" stuff in them. They are simply the richest type of supplement. And it's easier than buying five or six different bottles.

Our son eats a poor diet. Ann prepares a balanced meal, but he chooses to focus on protein/carbs and minimizes veggies. Whenever he does this for a prolonged period of time, he gets off balance mentally and we have to constantly remind him the importance of greens.
On my side, the Keto diet has lowered my blood pressure and stripped away almost 50 lbs of fat. I want to strip away another 50. I take vitamins C,D,K,B-complex, Cod-liver oil, Zinc, ashawaganda, Milk Thistle, a prostate supplement, pro-biotics, baby aspirin,,,,and some thers off and on like magnesium. We drink mineral water. Would like to start choline and vit E. Take potassium from time to time. I fast 18 hrs a day most days. I probably missed some of the other supplements/vitamins I take. I mix and match. The only ones I take religiously is my bp meds. All others are frequently to occasionally.

If the supplements are helping you and you have 100% functionality each day with them then they must be doing something. I'm no doctor, but if it helps - it must be helping.

I take loads of supplements. I hate how expensive the good quality stuff is, but if it helps, I stick with it. Some of them I take every other day or once a week or every few days because sometimes the dosage on the bottle isn't what works best so listening to your body is important.

I end up taking:

-Magnesium Oil: I make this myself with magnesium flakes. I do 1/4C water and 1/4C of flakes so I can fit it in my small spray bottle. Bigger quantities can be done like 1/2C and 1/2C or something. As long as the ratio is even. I spray it on my abdomen, rub it in, let dry for sec and it helps my joints not feel so achy. It's been miracle stuff for me.

-CBD Oil: This in itself is my top supplement. As far as medication goes, I barely even need it because the CBD oil seems to help me 95% of the time.

-B-Complex w/Folate: This is great once a week or every few days. Helps keep me from feeling so fatigued. Plus, I'm deficient in a few B-vitamins so I gotta keep up with it from time to time.

-Lugol's Iodine 5% solution: Two drops in a glass of water because I'm so iodine deficient it's not funny. I've come quite a long way on this and have been feeling loads better after being on it for a month, but I'm still not 100% recovered from that yet.

-Digestive Enzymes: Because I'm deficient in a lot of good enzymes. I've been feeling a lot better since taking these. I only take a small amount once a day.

-Probiotics: These have been helping me get a lot of energy back because I also lack a lot of the good bugs in my gut that I'm supposed to have.

-Bone Strength Supplement: Calcium/Magnesium/Phosphoros/Boron supplement when I don't have my Magnesium Oil available. I take this once or twice a week.

-Vitamin D3:
Because I'm deficient and I need it. It helps boost my energy a lot more.

-Vitamin C:
Once in a while when I feel a bit run down and need the boost, I'll take Vitamin C - usually an organic one if I can like acerola cherry or camu camu berry powder.

-Fermented Cod Liver Oil/Butter Oil Blend:
Helps me think better and helps my teeth so I take it.

If a supplement doesn't help, I don't bother, but the stuff that helps me, I'll keep taking. I'm not sure what did me in the most for all these deficiencies - getting ill or the medication I was on for so many years. I'll say that I've gotten a lot better sleep being off the medication than on it. My depression is a lot less, too.

I try to eat a diet that also isn't super carb heavy and includes lots of fresh vegetables. I'll have healthier carbs to help keep weight on. My diet follows more closely to paleo than keto. I'll also avoid the stuff I don't react to well and that helps me a lot, too.

There's usually a supplement out there to help with everything these days =P

I'm still letting the reality sink in that I'm so deficient in a lot of things and that we've come a long way from Eden. Our food system is not anything like it used to be.

I hear you, kids can be picky!

I remember my brother growing up. When my parents would order for him they would say, "Absolutely nothing green on the plate." If he saw one veggie, he wouldn't eat the whole thing. I remember a restaurant brought out his food and there was lettuce greens and tomato on the side to put on it - it was probably a burger or something. He wouldn't eat anything else on the plate - he saw it as a ruined dish. He's always been weird about food and trusting food made by other people. Not sure if he's still that way, but that kid did not like veggies at all. I remember my mom made pork and bean bread once and didn't tell him what it was because he wanted it so bad because it was bread. He absolutely loved it and asked what was in it and my mom said, "Pork and beans." and he spit it in the trash. He acted like he was dying when my parents had him take a bite of turkey one year at Thanksgiving before he got any dessert.

My oldest wasn't too entirely picky and she still isn't. Generally, she'll try new foods and doesn't like things that are too sweet. She was raised without a lot of refined sugar sweets (we didn't give her soda, juice, lollipops, or candies). I'll tell you, though, when she got a taste for them when she got it from someone else that's all she wanted...it got harder to have her eat her healthy foods for a while.

My second is like, "Fruit, fruit, fruit," and that's all she wants to eat next to bread...ugh. We don't buy bread, but if she is able to get a hold of it in a restaurant where they bring it to the table before a meal, she wastes no time to grab a roll or breadstick. She likes sweet and getting more savory foods to her is tricky, but I've found some ways:

-Get plain yogurt, mix in raw honey (if they're 2+, some doctors will say 1 year or older is okay for honey), use an immersion blender or regular sized blender to blend in blueberries and then add in a little bit of spinach. The immersion blender breaks it down so nicely, she doesn't notice it in there.

-Green juice (call it something fun like "hulk juice" or "bug juice" or "green slime" - whatever they think is cool), I make it in the omega masticating juicer and it's been great. She doesn't always try it, though, by my oldest will drink some of it.

-Popsicles! The wonder about popsicles and a blender...the possibilities are endless. We have some popsicle molds so we take advantage of it and I'll mix up some yogurt and fresh fruit or I'll blend some fruit and veggies together. I'll throw in spinach or a few beets or avocado with some blueberries or some peaches. Easy to hide veggies in there.

-Pasta sauce: We have a hard time with this one because our oldest has issues with tomatoes and our youngest has a lot of problems with dairy. We have been able to do a pesto that they can all have. The pasta may be heavier carb still if it's a gluten free alternative, but the sauce will be loaded with veggies and herbs. Not to mention, they make some pastas these days that are made out of red lentils or spinach and don't taste too different. Make zoodles (zucchini noodles) or squash noodles or carrot noodles can be a lot of fun and tasty! Plus, kids love that they are red or green =P

-Cauliflower crust pizza - haha yes yes yes <3 pizza is a vegetable! xD generally there are recipes for like fat head dough or a crust that's made of cauliflower and a different alternative flour to wheat. It can be a healthier alternative. A sauce can be made easily with a blender with tomatoes and other veggies hidden in!

-Chili - so many opportunities to hide veggies. As long as it's not too spicy.

-Find a veggie they absolutely love. There are so many to pick from, a lot of kids like at least one. My most picky non-vegetable eater loves broccoli and carrots, as long as they are steamed and super soft she loves it so I take advantage of sticking those on the plate as is. Keep trying to introduce different veggies as is on the plate, too - never know when they will decide to try it and may like it.

-Smoothies - I used to make a blueberry smoothie and hide some kale, chard, or spinach into it with an immersion blender and the kids ended up loving it.

I take a few supplements every day.

I take a multivitamin for men 50+. A couple years ago I happened to mention to a friend that I had been taking this vitamin and he made the comment, "I bet you haven't been sick since you started taking it." After thinking about it, he was pretty close to right. I haven't had much of a cold since and that continued to this day, except for about a month ago when I was dealing with a little post nasal drip for about a week.

I take a calcium + D3 supplement every day. My doctor suggested it for bone health.

I take a magnesium supplement every day. If I remember right, she suggested it would assist with my blood pressure management.

I take a fish oil supplement every day. I started taking this on my own. My brother was having some knee pain issues and said it helped him with that. I started doing to research and learned that fish oil is beneficial for assisting with regulating triglycerides in the blood and my triglycerides were hanging in the 300+ range. After adding it to my daily routine, my next doctor's appointment showed a remarkable improvement in my triglyceride levels, dropping to near normal range. As of my last visit about a month ago, my triglycerides are well in control and within normal range.

i really like Orthomolecular because it seems, intuitively, like it should cover all the nutritional bases, in a big, big way. other than that...

these rhodiola and ashwagandha supplements seem helpful, already. skimming over info about them, they seemed similar, and a lot of companies put them together in 1 pill, so I got both (sale!), and...and...

I am calmer, a bit more energy, better concentration. :)

Yep. Magnesium relaxes the nervous system. I use it for high blood pressure as well.
