It seems to be on the news all the time. Has this always been a problem and now it gets more media attention? Or do you think the problem itself has gotten more common?

Yeah - but only if it was a male teacher and a female student. Other way around? Not so much. In the 1980s several cases came to light (after decades of male teachers getting hung out to dry) and the women got a slap on the wrist, even if they got pregnant from their male students. (who were hailed as heroes; especially if the teacher was attractive) A small fine, maybe a jail sentence of a couple months served during summer vacation, and usually transferred to another school system. It probably did then .
Florida law allows alot more.Yeah - but only if it was a male teacher and a female student. Other way around? Not so much. A male teacher could spend up to 10 years behind bars, and have all his teaching credentials revoked for life. It was Statutory Rape even if it was the girl who seduced him.
Irc Florida never changed itJasonc, a lot of laws have changed in the last 10-20 years. Now the penalties for women teachers are similar to that of male teachers; (should have been all along) and yes, the age of consent has gone back down in many states.

Like the homelessness.they booted then out of townI dunno
I’m against victimization but I’m kind of worried that jail and prison are becoming the official solutions to all sorts of behaviors many of which I think society once somehow dealt with other ways…
