Testimonies and Witnesses

John 5:31-32

(Jesus Speaking)
31 “If I testify about myself, my testimony is not true. 32 There is another who testifies in my favor, and I know that his testimony about me is true./ (NIV)

Is Jesus talking about the same thing here as is spoken of in the Torah, in Deuteronomy?

Deuteronomy 19:15

15 One witness is not enough to convict anyone accused of any crime or offense they may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses./(NIV)

I'm doing a bible study and I am pretty sure that these verses are related, but want to be sure and gather more input on the subject. Thank you Brothers and Sisters! Bless you All.

Re: Testimonies ans Witnesses

I'm certainly not questioning our Lord Jesus! He had 12 Witnesses (at least!) Thousands really, when he fed them and healed them. That's not the scope of the study, so don't misunderstand! LOL.

Re: Testimonies ans Witnesses

I think you are on the right track thinking that Jesus was referring to Deuteronomy when He spoke those words.

That's what I thought handy. That's both discouraging and encouraging at the same time. Conundrum time. :chin

They are related but aren't they opposite.

I don't think so. Jesus is saying that he can't validate Himself (as a man) that others which bear witness and testimony brings credibility to His truth. In this way, Jesus validates John, and John validates Jesus. Am I right?

Funny you should bring up this text, Edward, as I was just reading this yesterday. I've always had a different take on who Jesus was referring to with regard to his witness. I have always thought he was referring to God himself as his witness. Maybe I'm way off base?

Perhaps. I've always taken this as he was obviously speaking of John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Him. Behold, the Lamb of God and so forth. I don't recall any scriptures where God the Father bore witness to anyone about Jesus, perhaps through a prophet, but not personally. No one's ever heard His voice! Jesus and John had quite a bit of interaction and so it seems to me...yes, John.

Another witness to the divine Personalities: three Persons in one God.

Hey, good point Farouk, me too. He's revealed Himself to me most positively.
It never ceases to amaze me the amount of love and goodness that God possesses for mankind! We turned our back on Him and disobeyed and He could have just as easily wiped us all out and did something else...but He didn't! and the amount of grace and love that He shows to all...is absolutely staggering! The more I learn, the more I stand in awe of His magnificence and love. Thank you Lord!

Yes, the hymn says:

'...the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.'

Blessings.

Maybe these verses from that same text is what pointed me in that direction?

36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.
37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

Hmm, maybe you're right! Maybe I am the one off base, lol. (wouldn't be the first time, lol). That being said, this brings up a question.

"And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me..."

How does the Father bear witness? He doesn't speak to man. It has to be either with the Works that He performs, or through a prophet. Agreed? If a prophet...we could still be talking about John, but Jesus is (rightly) ascribing it to the Father for the glory to Him and not to men. If through works (miracles and such) then we'd be talking about let those with eyes discern the signs? Or something like that? :chin

I'm unfamiliar with that Hymn. That's what I like about Google. Took me right to it. I like it!
