Bible Study The bottomless pit: is the Bible more literal than we thought?

I believe that the bottomless pit is located in the Mediterranean (Great) Sea, and that it is opened by means of a whirlpool through which devils come forth to possess men. Sound crazy? Here's why I think this:

In Daniel 7:2 the four winds of heaven strove (fought) upon the great sea (Mediterranean), and then it says that four beast came up from the sea. What would be the result of four winds striving on the sea? A whirlpool? A whirlpool opening to the bottom of the sea? The four beasts that came out would be four kings that will arise out of the earth (Dan.7:17). These four beasts "from the sea" will possess four kings "out of the earth."

Also, the anti-christ (beast) arises from the bottomless pit (Rev.11:7, 17:8). He also is said to arise from the sea (Rev.13:1). The bottomless pit is a literal place and the bible seems to point to the great sea as the door. Is the bible more literal than we thought?

Interesting, the word translated "bottomless pit" in Revelation 11:7 and 17:8 is ἀβύσσου, (abussou), and comes from ἀ alpha (as a neg. prefix) and βυσσος bussos = buthos, the bottom (of the sea). The thought could be expressed as "the unfathomable depths (of the sea)".

For Kathi* If the world leaders knew what we knew they'd be trembling in their boots.. A story about a King that sent his army to capture the Prophet Elisha

II Kings 6:14 Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.

15 And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do?

16 And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.

17 And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!

Whats that supposed to mean i took that from a quote you made here..

Kathi said: I think it is best that we are blinded by our surroundings. If we knew the things that our world leaders knew at times it might scare us.They don't want a world panic. But God is in control..

If the world leaders could see the protection God gives us as he gave to Elisha they'd be scarred stiff

I remember a story or folklore about when the Disciples were in a boat on the way to the other side and a tempest broke out and almost sunk their boat but Jesus walking on the water came to save them. Folklore has it that demons live in the water. They can whip up tempests at anytime or whirlpools. When the Disciples saw Jesus walking on the water, at first they thought it was a demon ghost coming out of the water to get them. Jesus had to tell them not to fear. That folklore was really believed by the fishermen of that day. So, Kevin, there is probably some truth to your theory.

I agree with that.If people could look head to the tribulation and the Coming of our Lord they would be scared.

Funny you should say that, I have always felt something demonic about tornados.

Right! There has always been something about these catastrophic storms that have me wondering. Is this from God to a wicked Nation? Is this satanic controlled? Or is this just the results of the adamic curse.

Well, many of them are because super-smart-race of "white" people didn't listen to the poor ole' ignant red indian savages.
White man came along and tore up the country, devastated huge portions of the whole continent.
They thought they had no reason to believe
the natives who they stole the land from
when the natives generously and graciously and probably politely
warned them
that if they take down the trees, the big winds will come.
So white man in his infinitesimally small wisdom cut down the forests (like mon-wickedness has done in s.america and etc - burning 10's of millions of rain forests utterly, to grow money, regardless of damage to the earth and the natives and the people of the world)
and wa-la -- tornadoes!

one small town in kansas had enough of it, but they couldn't grow the forest back,
so they built a hill on the windward side of the town. before then, WATCH OUT! -frequent tornadoes hit the town. after the hill was built, peace and tranquility - the tornadoes went around the town. (and never would have started in the first place if enough forests had been left in place.

Hey! I like that Jeff! I hadn't put that together like you did. Wow, you could be exactly right. I have always been saddened by the plight of the American Indians. I hate the reality of white man killing the Indian men, and raping their women, burning down their villages, and driving them off THEIR land. Then to torture them even more, by pushing them into the ghetto reservations. I absolutely despise the abuse of our American Indians. If I could go back in time, I would have fought on their side....I can see though, your reasoning about the trees blocking or actually consuming strong winds that eventually turn into tornadoes because there is nothing there to defuse them.

I remember from history, about the terrible dust storms of the mid west. Do you think that was the result of your perception on the loss of trees?

It wasn't my idea, though I think I thunk it also - no reasoning involved actually, just being told - the indians did tell white man that if they took down the trees, big wind would come. How'd they know? Yeshua could have told them, or they may have had a long enough history and seen it happen, been wise enough to put 2 and 2 together when they saw it.

the dust bowls were totally a disgrace and tragedy and caused by the plowing taught by the us government dept of ag, plowing and other farming methods which devastated this country, the land, the farmers, the economy, and the morale of the little people (common people) who simply love Yhwh the Creator and Yeshua and Life and Truth. (i.e.this country has experienced a "whole system failure", not just pieces of it here and there, for a long long time)

several books were published so it was and is no secret why the 'recent' dust storms happened. just maybe not publicized much because of who was at fault.
