Why did the devil ever think he could deceive Christ to command HIM to jump from the mountain? Why did he try to tempt HIM in the first place?

You will also realise that the devil also quotes the bible and has been a crafty devil. First, he quoted the right scripture (valid scripture ) - however he deliberately took it out of context in order to deceive Christ:
‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’. The context where it was used is different. I think he quoted somewhere in the OT, precisely Deutronomy. There is a Psalm version too

Why did he think he could succeed?

simple, the same reason multitudes of believers(so-called) today think they can get any of the Promises of Yhwh including eternal life,
but are told on judgment day otherwise and are quite surprised by it !!

John 6:65 King James Version (KJV)
65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.
King James Version (KJV)

John 3:27 To this John replied, "A person can receive only ...
... A man can receive nothing unless it be given him out of heaven. ... "A man cannot obtain anything," replied John, "unless it has been granted to him from Heaven.

It's a good question. Why did he think he could defeat God on his home territory in the first place?

Pride...It's the root of all evil.

There's a great book called "Humility, True Greatness" by C.J Mahaney. It shows how to defeat pride by cultivating humility in your life.

After reading several chapters, you'll see how Humility is the secret of life that everyone's been looking for. It Biblically illustrates how humility bestows God's grace...Humility is the greatest challenge for humans in this life - quite an awesome journey.

I wonder sometimes if he harbors a tiny thought that he can still manage to win this.

The devil spent his time quoting scriptures from the Author's book to the Author. :lol

Christ replied to the devil. Was HE reiterating the verses? Th devil took everything out of context.

Probably. But we have read the book.We know who is going to win. :thumbsup

Well, in the movie "Devil's advocate," AL Pacino (Satan) replied, "Well, consider the source, son..."

Pride is a strange sin, its a relationship sin, I am better than you...Satan thought he knew Scripture as good as Jesus did...
that's why He challenged Him....Jesus was born as you and I and had to be talk all over who He was, and His Father left a book about Him to read as He was growing up, its called the Scriptures...so Jesus mum read Scripture to Him and later on Jesus read and memorized the Scriptures Himself. Satan took pride in himself to think He knew Scripture too.

I too believe it was pride, trying to bring Jesus down to his level. Which if he did, the bible wouldn't be as we know it today.

Was it just all about pride...or je wanted to destroy Christ?

Satan wanted to put himself on the same level as God.It wasn't going to happen.
Yea. How about if we focus on why he felt he could succeed. Didn't he think so...or was it another of his delusions?

Pride makes me a little worried when we use it in this context. Please define pride.
