The Fig Tree

It reads Jesus answered the tree.
Even if it actually means that in the original Greek, it's easy to understand it as him answering the tree's unfruitfulness, not answering something it said to him: "No fruit, huh? Well, here's my answer to that!"

Ohhh!! I'll buy that :)

Easy he says, lol...my coffee was weak which made my glass extra dark this am.

...and my dog ate my homework lol.

NKJV reads as follows for verses 13 and 14.
And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it. When He came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. In response Jesus said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.”

So to me, it seems like the fruit was out of season.
Wasn't time yet, for fruit.
Ponder on that. Not really talking to WIP , but us all.

Whenever I have read these verses it just seems like Jesus out of character. I wonder why?

Here is the explanation Jesus gave to His disciples the next day.
Now in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. And Peter, remembering, said to Him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away.” So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. Mark 11:20-24 NKJV

Do you suppose that Jesus could be telling us to be careful about what we ask for as we may get it?

Repentance - John's baptism
Eternal life - Jesus baptism
Power to witness - Holy Spirit baptism

The spiritual gifts and fruits of spirit are probably intertwined. Bell pomgranet bell fruit.

Before we have the gifts, some put on the garments that siginify fruit is present. I look at myself to see if I am real (no sometimes I do not like what I see).

Paul went away for a time for revelations?) in the fullness of time he was ready. He was clothed with the death of Jesus, and not his old Jewish religious garment. He put on Christ.

We can put on our denominational garments long before the reality of being ready for fruit. How many are grieved if we have no fruit (we have the leaves but no fruit). Sometimes the wolf is inside.

I enjoy your posts.

Thanks Eddie
I see it also as harvesting, out of season.
The untimely figs.
As in Rev.6:13
In Mark 13:18-20
Let not your flight be in winter., out of season...

Psalms 1:1
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Always more about Jesus.

Jesus was seeing leaves that pointed to fruit, and when he found none the curse came (the curse cause less does not come).
Proverbs 26:2 KJV
As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.

There are untimely things, but the lack of fruit (at the right time) seems to be the Mark passage. Ultimately the inner man brings forth fruit in the correct season (the storms of life do not cause the doubt they once did.
Revelation 3:20

Edward really started an interesting thread.

Hi eddif,
Didn't mean to address you as Eddie, sometimes, the spelling corrections on my tab, does what it wants, lol.
Yes, it is interesting, thanks for your input.
Have a good day.

Exactly. When leaves appear on a fig tree, we know that the fruit is coming soon.

Me too Brother. Perhaps that was why I questioned if Jesus really cursed it or just spoke to it, and Peter misunderstood because it did die... a little odd to curse it, maybe Jesus was making a different point?

Yes, very interesting.
I think it does allude to the fact that it was not really Israel's time when Jesus came the first time. There is a season when they will indeed bear the fruit of the kingdom to Jesus's joy and pleasure.

Not feeling it, but I do agree we do have to consider carefully what we ask for. Lost a TV to lightning one time in answer to prayer, just to turn right around and replace it :lol.

It is interesting that Jesus would go off on a teaching about getting things done by faith when the real issue is why he cursed the fig tree. But that's Jesus......like when he answered Nicodemus in John 3. He just started talking about being born again.

What's it mean that it says He answered it?

That is an artifact of the Late Middle English of the KJV. We don't speak Late Middle English any more and when we read the KJV, it can cause confusion.

Reading a Modern English translation eliminates the problem.

NIV: Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
NASB: He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And His disciples were listening.
RSV: And he said to it, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." And his disciples heard it.

The author of Hebrews uses a similar metaphor to explain what happens to fruitless ground:

Of course, he's referring to believers. (Or believer-posers? :shrug)

Israel was useless to Jesus (for whom it was being tilled). She bore no fruit. So she was cursed.

Not all of Israel. The original church was 100% Kosher!

And it's temporary. God's not done with Israel.

Rom 11:25-29 (NKJV)
For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:

“The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;
For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.”

Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

I must be the exception then as I'm able to read that English.

oh a futurist orthodox . that is a new one.

Mar 11:13 And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.
Mar 11:14 And Jesus answered.. and said unto it, ...No man eat fruit of thee ...hereafter for ever. ....And his disciples heard it.
Interesting

Mark 11:12
And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry:

Another interesting fact: hunger was a major factor driving his expectation. Go reba
