The Fig Tree

Jer 8:13 I will surely consume them, saith the LORD: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.

Joe 1:12 The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men.
Joe 1:13 Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.
Joe 1:14 Sanctify ye a fast, call a solemn assembly, gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the LORD your God, and cry unto the LORD,
Joe 1:15 Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.
The twelve new these verses very well......... they knew the passages they didnot have chapter and verse... :)

A little help from hitch?

Matthew 6:31
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
32 For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Matthew 5:6
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Jesus was about his father's business so seeing leaves he expected certain things.

I sure want to try and word this correctly.

Let me try a question.
Is the time from approximately Ezekiel to John the Baptist (400 years) the time of tree failure?
The good guys were off in dispersion during this time. John's repentance offers an end to rebellion after punishment mentioned in Ezekiel.

The kingdom teaching begins with John. I realize Jesus came under the Law. I also realize the mighty works of Jesus.

If we behave we may learn a good bit from this thread. This all is straining my thinker and allowing the Holy Spirit to speak.

Thanks folks

Of course, he's referring to believers. (Or believer-posers? :shrug)

Not all of Israel. The original church was 100% Kosher!

And it's temporary. God's not done with Israel.

Rom 11:25-29 (NKJV)
For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:

“The Deliverer will come out of Zion, And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;
For this is My covenant with them, When I take away their sins.”

Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

II Corinthians 3:14 KJV
But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ.

The hearing may sure not be with the ear as much as it is the understanding.
Ephesians 1:18 KJV
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

Job moved from hearing to seeing. Today we say "Oh now I see" or "I hear you"

Matthew 17:13
Then the disciples understood that he had been speaking to them about John the Baptist.

Another example of real hearing

Consider also the Parable of the Fig Tree found in the gospel of Luke.

He spoke also of this parable;

A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none. Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

— Luke 13:6–9, King James Version

Timing is critical. The curse came at the end of His ministry during the final days before the Last Supper. The tree was cursed on the day after the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem and just before His Cleansing of the Temple.

(By the way, and in response to previous posts, we should know that just saying that something is a metaphor does not mean that it did not happen, only that there is a deeper meaning that may be understood beyond what was seen at the time. Here with have literal -- with metaphor and there is also a parable - a non-literal)

But when we consider the timing it's easy to see that Jesus must have been thinking about the events of the previous day and the Zechariah 9:9 prophecy, “Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” It was the day after and, as has been pointed out before, Jesus was hungry.

Think about His mindset at the time. He saw leaves and went to the tree. My thought was that he may have been considering spiritual meanings behind what was seen. For instance, we know that Trees have special biblical significance. Leaves may be associated with healing.

Ezekiel 47:12
Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing."

Rev 22:2
On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
And there may be more here than Jesus expecting food, more than the tree's false promise of healing which may have prompted the curse.

God is Love. Jesus shows us this in a way that meets our eye on the cross, but in the days before, He shows us of His love in ways that don't meet the eye of the world. Consider the words of the Song of Solomon. What if Jesus had recently read or had fondly recalled the love spoken of and found in the Song of Solomon. What if the words prophetic brought greater expectation to His mind. Listen to what I imagine may have been part of that conversation.

Proverbs 27:18 likens tending a fig tree to looking after one's master. Recall the timing once again. The day after His Triumphal Entry.

Song of Solomon 2:12 The Bride's Adoration
12 The flowers have already appeared in the land; The time has arrived for pruning the vines, And the voice of the turtledove has been heard in our land. 13 The fig tree has ripened its figs, And the vines in blossom have given forth their fragrance. Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, And come along!'"

Now I've gone too far, haven't I? Pretending to "listen in" to a conversation between our Savior and His Beloved. But that's just where this leads me. What do you think? Certainly, there is more to this than what meets the eye.
