I have frequently expressed my distaste and near contempt for the 'scholars' who are purported to 'know' what they are talking about when it comes to scriptural matters.
After all, many are being paid hefty salaries and receiving much dosh from writing books and lecturing/consulting on the religious circuits wherever they may roam.
They should know.
My distaste comes from at least 3 causes:
1 Jesus and His apostles had absolutely no use for the scholars of the day - and there were many of them
They never quote, cite, refer to,any of them, except to condemn them for their misuse of the scriptures, and their ignoring of the very plain commandments of scriptures.
The classic one comes to mind: '...ye make the word of God of none effect by your traditions'.
A more scorching statement without resorting to bad language is impossible to conceive.
2 The 'scholars' of today are the lineal descendants of the higher critical schools of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
These evil men deliberately set about trying to reduce the scriptures' dependability to rubble, by making such claims as: 'Moses couldn't write'; 'Abraham didn't exist'; Adam and Eve are fables; Daniel's prophecies were written after the events; there are about a dozen Isaiah's; and so the list goes on, and on, and on...
They were teachers in the university Theology departments, and passed down their poisonous teachings to several generations of students, many of whom held similar posts later on, and trained many for the ministry: who as a consequence had no salt in themselves or their sermons.
That second generation themselves trained others, but by this time, the archaeologists' discoveries were shutting many higher critical mouths.
Moses could write after all. Abraham's name and others in the book of Genesis were found to be actual people, living in discoverable places - like Ur of the Chaldees. Shards and tablets were found, one recent one with the actual name of one of the kings mentioned by Jeremiah. Luke was a historian of the first rank.
And so the facts have gone on accumulating and wrecking many of these evil theories - but the attitude remains and persists to this day.
3 The sheer stupidity of many of the things being discussed defies description: and today, I would like to bring the one that has most recently come to my attention to the board.
It is to do with the Hebrew word for 'the firmament'.
Believe it or not, arguments have raged, claiming that the word 'raqia' is a Hebrew word meaning a solid dome, like beaten sheet metal. Therefore, God could not have placed the moon and stars and sun in such a firmament.
Since that is the case, then Gen 1 is totally unscientific and cannot be relied upon. Allegedly intelligent university students have abandoned their beliefs and headed for the dangerous oceans of unbelief, skepticism and atheism.
Because of the work of the 'scholars'.
I cannot speak sufficiently fiercely against them. Maybe there are those who retain their belief in the inspiration of scripture. If there are, I am prepared to listen to them - but until they make a statement to that effect, I will pay no attention to them.
But the real point I want to make is about 'the dome'.
It cannot have escaped your notice that if the writer of Genesis 1 was an unscientific jackass, then it follows that the Israelis today are no less monumental jackasses.
Why?
Because they have, today, an IRON DOME overhead. Invisible: but there nonetheless.
It's their name for their aerial rocket defence system which has acted like a sheet of metal, and prevented Palestinian rockets from hitting Israeli cities!
A DOME, yes, a DOME, overhead.
And the scholars are incapable of figuring out the simple fact that the sky above DOES LOOK LIKE A DOME! Go have a look, if you haven't done so recently.
But no. So hell-bent are they on making the writer of Genesis looks stupid, and worse, (or maybe better, from their point of view) UNINSPIRED, that they cannot take this simple step when reading the text.
As I say, I find it nearly impossible to speak well of them as a class.
And I therefore counsel you, the reader, to exercise extreme caution when reading their works.
Do what the Bereans did:
11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
They did not rush out and consult the Jewish rabbis, or buy the most recent books of the pagan writers and philosophers.
They searched the scriptures daily.
You endanger your own salvation if you fail to follow their example.
The scriptures, the scriptures first and foremost, must be your source book, your guide, your ultimate authority.
And God will bless you for honouring His Word, and treating it with the respect of which it is so unspeakably worthy.
