The Forbidden Incense!!! Dun dun dunnnnn

Exodus 30
34 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take fragrant spices—gum resin, onycha and galbanum—and pure frankincense, all in equal amounts, 35 and make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer. It is to be salted and pure and sacred. 36 Grind some of it to powder and place it in front of the ark of the covenant law in the tent of meeting, where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you. 37 Do not make any incense with this formula for yourselves; consider it holy to the LORD. 38 Whoever makes incense like it to enjoy its fragrance must be cut off from their people.â€

This is the incense that the priests burn(for passover I believe). I see that God clearly says not to make it for any other reason, I am curious as to why.

I remember first reading this a while back and thinking... wow, this is the smell that pleases God. I am sure this would smell great! So I need this this and this....Aw man, God won't let me make some....

So why do you folks think this is?

1Sa 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

Correct, but why can't I use it to make my bathroom more pleasant? Is it like pork? It isn't healthful to me? I feel like I would be the naughty boy behind the tent trying to catch a wiff.

Whew lucky i am under grace because i love incense and never check the recipe when I buy it.

I too am thankful for GRACE... Big time..

Does His Grace change that He is also a jealous God. He gets angry etc.

Hey Chris your not under Grace by LUCK :)

I would not set out to blend that recipe. Nor would i drop over dead if i used it... Seems a bit disrespectful to wish to have incense unto the Lord for your bathroom (My old lady side..).

Odd how we ( I ) think what we would do or not do.... I have zero qualms about eating pork, love sausage gravy and biscuits. yet i would not blend that incense.

Like on the other thread, i would not have a crucifix. I have had both the a cross and the fish... end of ramble

The Incense burns not only for Passover, but continuously upon the Golden Altar of Incense. This Altar sits in front of the Ark of the Covenant and literally makes a “smokescreen†around the God of Israel as He sits upon the Mercy Seat (His throne as He dwells with the people.) You can see this in Rev 8:2-5 when John shows us the Heavenly Temple (that will come down to Jerusalem at Messiah’s 2nd Coming) and the prayers of the saints prior to the 1st Trumpet Judgment. (BTW: the Book of Revelation is LOADED with references to theAltar (not just the Golden Incense Altar) and the Sacrificial system. Something to think about if you believe that sacrifices were “done away with.â€))

It is because its fragrance and smoke represents our PRAYERS to Him, which of course, are HOLY. The definition for "holy" = set apart.

Yes, I'm sure it does smell great.... and yes! It DOES please the Lord! And who doesn't want to please the Lord? Again, the Incense is HOLY and not to be made common. It is the same with us when we accept the Messiah as our Savior: His blood washed us clean and made us holy (set apart = different = uncommon) unto Him. Once purified, we are not to make ourselves common or unclean to Him. When Paul tells us that the Temple is "in" us, that's a huge hint telling us that whatever makes the Temple unclean, makes US unclean, too! Plus it brings us back to the PATTERN of the Temple.... how we worship God in flesh AND spirit.

I feel like I would be the naughty boy behind the tent trying to catch a wiff.

And if you were to do that, you would most likely get zapped just like Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu! (Lev 10) So DON"T!!! :pray

Actually thinking about it I dont have an ark of the covenant to burn it near either so ii am not sure how i could get in trouble.

besides there is probably some secret herbs ans spices involved.

I dont like frankincense so there's less temptation. I prefer musk or opium.

Fedusenko,

I think what youre looking for just takes a little reading between the lines.

The material itself,or unhealthiness of it,is not the issue.God wanted this to be used solely at the ark (for unstated reasons of His own). The implied importance of it was that due to usage restriction at one place,it was solely identified with the ark and God.

Nothing in the incense was magical..God basically said hey, make me this to certain specifications, and only use it over here by Me.It was special because it was only used by the ark.

Obviously He had to make sure noone disobeyed His request,so the added punishment of exile was thrown in if anyone couldnt follow instructions. The isrealites, just like us,were known for messing up and God had to be very clear, almost ridiculously so.

Why He chose this particular scent and wanted it burned only at the ark can only be a matter of speculation.I suspect if anything perhaps God wanted to increase His relationship with the priests by appealing to them through their senses. Its almost like remembering a certain place in your life..maybe going to grandmas and always having the smell of good food cooking in the air.You always remember something like that, and the good memory makes it so much better to come back to.Perhaps He just wanted to create some sort of positive connection with coming to meet with Him at the ark.

Or maybe He just likes incense.Who knows?

With that said,I think that just as some others stated I would leave it alone out of respect. If God wanted it at the ark alone then thats how I think Ill leave it.

I don't think that this would be a very common recipe given the components. So I wouldn't worry about accidentally purchasing it.

What does grace have to do with this?

Ha ha, snake! Where did magic come from? I don't think the Supreme Master of the Universe needs incense to create a positive connection.

And thank you nmwings. Insightful. I am sure you already recognize this, but the incense would be at his feet.

You say this only because you do not understand, and people criticize things they don’t understand. If you are willing to learn…..

God intended to make His dwelling place in the heart of every one of the sons of Israel. But they proved their hearts were not ready to receive the Spirit of God. So God had them build a Tabernacle to serve as a pattern or picture to teach us that it is from the heart that we obey the Lord and that it is our heart where His dwelling place would be. If you’re going to transform a group of slaves into free men it has to happen from the inside- out. In order to make this world peaceful where we can all get along with each other, you have to change the PEOPLE! A set of laws aren’t going to change people. Every person has to change on the INSIDE, so God begins our spiritual instruction with the Tabernacle.

The Golden Altar of Incense represents YOU! This Altar is where the priest comes in to perform the highest level of worship. This is how the service wasperformed:

In the morning the priests come in to prepare for the daily worship of God: cleaning the Altar of Burned Offering, preparing the Menorah, checking the Bread, etc. And when they were ready to put up the morning lamb, the priest (designated by lot) would go in to put incense on the Golden Altar. The moment that incense hits those coals… POOF! A cloud would form. And at that very moment the lamb went up on the Altar of Burned Offering and the cloud of sweet fragrance would go up before the Lord. Scripture tells us that this fragrance is “pleasing†or “sweet†unto Him. But that sweet-smelling smoke is REALLY illustrating the prayers of the saints- OUR prayers! That’s YOU and ME! That is a picture of you and me rendering our highest form of worship to the Lord right there at the Mercy Seat…. in His Presence! And it is done in conjunction with the lamb: that lamb that has qualified us to come before the Mercy Seat of God so that we can render our highest form of worship. The result of the work of the Messiah is that He opened that veil, and WE NOW HAVE FULL ACCESS TO THE MERCY SEAT AND NOTHING SEPARATES US ANYMORE.

Hebrews 9 is telling New Covenant believers that our High Priest Yeshua (Jesus) the Messiah is much better than the High Priest after the order of the Levites because they had to go in and do a special service once every year (Yom Kippur aka Day of Atonement.) But OUR High Priest (Messiah) who is after the order of Melchisedek is able to render the service for us in a very special way: He took HIS blood and put it onto the Altar in HEAVEN!
The Levitical priests were set up to teach us what our Great High Priest would do, so that we can see the PATTERN and understand what the Messiah had done for us in Heaven.

What does grace have to do with this?
Let’s make sure we’re using BIBLICAL definitions here….grace is receiving something you did not deserve, while mercy is NOT receiving something you DID deserve. Do we DESERVE to have full access to the Mercy Seat now? No way! So grace has EVERYTHING to do with Golden Altar of Incense.

I realize all this sounds foreign and strange, but it is because no one in the Church bothered to teach us the most BASIC of instructions that the Lord gave us on how we are to worship Him. They ignore Scripture and make up their own way of worshipping Him. The main problem?? If you get a wrong idea about what Moses said, you’ll get a fouled-up understanding of the Messiah! But if you get exactly what Moses said, then you’ll understand EXACTLY what the Messiah said! The Messiah Himself told us “If you don’t believe the words of Moses, you wonâ™t believe Me!â€

I'm going to make this simple statement and leave the details out. The Lord wanted everything regarding the tabernacle, the tabernacle furniture, the priests garb, and even the incense to blueprint-like specifications. This is because as Paul said of the feast days, and by extension the things of the tabernacle were signs of things to come --- they foreshadowed and prophesied the future work of Christ and God's redemptive plan as they acted this all out. Think of it like a legal trademark. If people were to use it for a common purpose, then that would take the sanctification of it away and confuse what the Lord was trying to portray.

very well said nmwings.

I'm glad there are others that take the time to study the OT. :thumbsup

Fed,
God didn't tell Adam why he couldn't eat from the tree in the middle of the garden either... It's not about questioning God. We are well within our right to question God. However, we should never place ourselves AS or Above God where we reason away his commandments. This is what Eve did, and Adam followed suit.

Thanks Tim. Very culture relevant response.

Stove, yeah I know. I am just a curious little kid trapped in a grown up body. You say no and I say .... but WHYYYYYYYYYY!!!??? Sometimes more exclamation than question marks, unfortunately.

The incense is figurative of the Holy Spirit. All counterfeits attached to our worship and service to God will result in judgment.

UncleC I's point was, some things definitely apply to the Old Testament, and somethings to the New. Or, stated differently, dispensationalism.
What he does not understand is that....

The New Testament is in the Old Testament concealed, and

The Old Testament is the New Testament revealed.

Without knowing what Moses and the Prophets say concerning both His 1st and 2nd coming, we get a very distorted view of Who He is, what He has done and what He will do. Thus, we have many brethren making ignorant statements like this...
I like the C I Scofield quote: 'Can someone fetch that guy a New Testament?'

Well, ty for the 'compliment' but you will find that many Christians in North America do follow a dispensational view of the Scriptures. The elementary question: Who is the writer talking to? Old Testement Jews or New Testament Christians? is actually of crucial importance to the interpretation of Scripture.

Blessings.
