Bible Study The Gospel in the Old Testament

1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (AV)
3For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

At the time all the scriptures in existence were the Old Testament scriptures.

Sometimes the Gospel was obvious...

Jeremiah 31:31–34 (AV)
31Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
32Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
33But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
34And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Sometimes in a less likely place...

Psalm 51:13 (AV)
13Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.

But when the Bereans who were commended by Paul searched the scriptures daily to see if what he taught was true or not (Acts 17:11), it was the Old Testament they searched.

I found through searching for Jesus and the Gospel in the Old Testament a richer / fuller understanding of him and the Gospel and have become less prone to fall for traditions typically focused on limited portions of New Testament scripture. Not to disparage the New Testament in any way. The Old Testament provides the background for the New Testament in so many ways as to colorize black and white imagery.

I invite people here to show Jesus and the Gospel in the Old Testament. When you do a little digging led by the Spirit you will be amazed by just how much both are in the Old Testament.

Deuteronomy 18:15-19 The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken; According to all that thou desiredst of the Lord thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the Lord my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not. And the Lord said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken. I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.

Jeremiah 23:5-8 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely:and this is his name whereby he shall be called, the Lord our Righteousness. Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that they shall no more say, The Lord liveth, which brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; But, The Lord liveth, which brought up and which led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country, and from all countries whither I had driven them; and they shall dwell in their own land.

Elements of the crucifixion, its location, and the resurrection, and the ascension are mingled all through this text.

Genesis 22 (AV)
1And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
2And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
4Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
6And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
7And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
8And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
9And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
10And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
11And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
12And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
13And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
14And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
15And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
16And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
17That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
18And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
19So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

Where was Isaac? Obviously he returned with Abraham. But he is not mentioned which is also prophetic of the time Jesus would go away until the time of his return is come (depending upon the time of the Gentiles completing and the outcry of the Jews to save them from Armageddon).

One can argue many things can be taken in many ways. "God will provide himself a lamb" for example. God will provide a lamb for himself. God will provide himself as a lamb. Why not just God will provide a lamb? Maybe it means more? The deeper meaning?

Isaiah 28:9–13 (AV)
9Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.
10For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:
11For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
12To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
13But the word of the LORD was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

Dr. Chuck Missler teaches that the Bible is an integrated message system arranged in the Old Testament especially in anticipation of hostile jamming (interference).

Deuteronomy 29:29 (AV)
29The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Proverbs 25:2 (AV)
2It is the glory of God to conceal a thing: but the honour of kings is to search out a matter.

I like the entire 53rd Chapter of Isaiah.

Isa 53:1 Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
Isa 53:2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.
Isa 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Isa 53:4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isa 53:7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.
Isa 53:8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people?
Isa 53:9 And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.
Isa 53:10 Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
Isa 53:11 Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.
Isa 53:12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

The 53rd Chapter of Isaiah, many Jews believe teach about the Jewish people being the suffering servant. Those who try to witness Christ to Jewish people encounter this when using this text.

There are many ways to counter their interpretation, like the singular terms referring to the servant and that the benefactors of the suffering servant would have to be the pagans (gentiles) if it were referring to the Jewish people as they suppose.

But the Holy Spirit gave the best answer of all.

The suffering servant is in fact Israel. But there are many Israels. Israel - Jacob the patriarch. Israel the ancient northern kingdom. Israel the modern state. Israel the people / i.e. children of Israel. And one more most (including Christians) do not even consider as Israel...

Israel or Yisra'el is a contraction of three words Yish meaning he Sarar the original root word for prince and El short for Elohiym meaning God. He Prince God / He is the Prince of God. And no rabbi worth his or her salt would deny that the ultimate Prince of God is the Messiah.

Then you use the sentence structure to show how Isaiah 52:13 - Isaiah 53:12 points to the Ultimate Prince of God.

Always loved this one (I heard it from Chuck Missler, don't know if he discovered it or not)...

Lamech was the only bugaboo in the bunch to track down to the original (even Missler did not / could not nail this one down). So I undertook an extensive search and found "L' maqaq" (strong's #) H4743 was the actual root word / name if memory serves.

The Gospel message is contained in the whole of the old testament writings. In fact the story contained within the old testament is a parable of the gospel message.

The Story as we know it begins in the Garden of Eden, the Garden of God. And in this garden there are two trees. The Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge. In the Garden Adam was told he could eat of any tree in the garden, only do not touch the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for in the day you eat thereof you shall surely die.

In the Old testament we find the story of the children of Israel as they were lead up out of the land of Egypt, where they made a covenant of Law where they swore they would obey Moses, and they made their covenant with death in Sinai upon Mt Horeb. But the story within the law and the prophets told of a new covenant with the house of Israel, a covenant from which the Law of God would come forth from Zion.

The Law of Moses is the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. By the law the knowledge of Sin is made known within us, and by sin death. The Old covenant made on Mt Horeb was a covenant with the Tree of Knowledge, and by its fruit the knowledge of the sin and death, though by its knowledge they think themselves to be wise judging between right and wrong. But the new covenant comes from Mt. Zion, and the law of the Lord is Liberty and Grace through Faith, and it is a Covenant in the Tree of Life, and it bears its fruit in its due season, and its fruit is Life and peace. The law as it comes forth from Zion reveals the Glory and Righteousness of Christ within us.

Amen Brother, I'll have to remember that, thank you.

Hey Buddy, good post. I am studying the book of Revelation, again! I'm drawn to this book even though I don't understand some of it. I was reading Chapter 2:1-7 and I'd like your take on 2:7 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God."....How often do you think we will eat of the tree of life....I don't want to derail this thread so where can you answer this?
