The History of Halloween

Halloween should be handled with great care. There are many dark pagan twists to it and many practices that do still happen today that are very much forbidden by scripture.

Personally, I will hand out treats with tracts with them. I rarely dress up, but if I do, I make sure it is not something that resembles evil/the occult and nothing scary. So no wizards, vampires, witches, or demons for me.

Fair enough, to each their own. :) (What you said about the pagan practices is true though and that's why I don't celebrate that part of Halloween.)

Halloween is a contraction of (All) Hallow's Evening, i.e. is the evening before the Christian feast of All Hallows' Day, which was to remember the dead.

However, it is said that many of the customs that have come to be associated with Halloween originated from pagan customs.

Jack-o-lanterns are supposed to represent the dead, or spirits, or things that arise from hell like demons. It is believed to have originated in Ireland.

Trick-or-treating was based on leaving food and drink out for the visiting spirits, and later handed out to visitors making their rounds in the neighborhood honoring the dead.

Not sure about the witchcraft stuff, other than a holiday commemorating the dead could surely attract occultish customs.
All Saint's Day (November 1st) is one of the most boring services the Catholic Church offered in times past.
All the "scary" stuff was originally intended to scare people into Church. (There wasn't a lot of literacy in those days and people were scared of witches...Salem Witch Trials?)

Mysticism was highly prevalent. The English Bible didn't really appear until the printing press and King Henry VIII.

So John, how many trick-or-treaters do you get? If you dish out as much real candy as you do for virtual, you probably have people from different countries showing up at your house. :lol

Also I just wanted to point out on here that my question wasn't answered. What exactly is real witchcraft and why does the Bible speak against it? :confused

Witch of Endor was consulted by King Saul to call up the spirit of Samuel. I think this is in 1 Samuel ch 28

Samuel seems annoyed, asking Saul "why are you bothering me" or some such...

Yeah, I've heard about that but that doesn't tell me all that much of what it is and why the Bible forbids it though,.. and I might get a little backlash on this but I don't think that fantasy wizards and witches that go to a fictional school in Britain counts because number one they're mostly good witches and wizards, and number two,.. fantasy and fictional are the key words here.

I did answer your question back in post #4. Witchcraft is dealing with evil occultism dealing with the conjuring of evil spirits that gives glory to Satan through the practice of magical skills and abilities.

Oh, my apologies, I guess I just didn't really understand your response, but who in their right mind would want to glorify the devil and conjure evil spirits in the first place? :screwloose2

There are probably more Satan worshipers than there are those who worship God. Look up Anton Szandor LaVey who was the founder of the Church of Satan in 1966 in San Francisco. He was the High Priest until his death in 1997 and taught from The Satanic Bible. The church moved to Hell's Kitchen, Manhattan, NY and Peter H. Gilmore was appointed High Priest after Anton's death.

Just because one does not want to believe or understand such things as devil worshiping, it has always existed.

Yeah, but why? Jesus offers eternal life and Satan offers eternal death, torture, and punishment. It doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to me why somebody would worship the devil,.. or sacrifice innocent little animals. :sad

Why do people bow down to Satan is because of the temptations he puts before them. He is the ruler of darkness of this world who deceives the nations as even Satan can appear as an angel of light. What he promises are lies and deceit as those who lack Spiritual knowledge will gladly take what he has to offer them.

Matthew 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and showeth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

I actually saw him sing at a county fair many years ago. He is the Father of John Ritter who played on Three's Company.

Really? I never would have pieced that together actually. I know John Ritter from Clifford The Big Red Dog (and yes I still watch it from time to time :lol) Problem Child, and Bride of Chucky. :wink (Due to it being inappropriate for the forum I can't post the last thing that I know him from.)

Oh btw, I've had that Animal Fair song stuck in my head since yesterday and the version of the song that I know goes like this; "Oh I went to the animal fair, the birds and the beasts were there, the big baboon by the light of the moon was combing his auburn hair. The monkey he got drunk, and sat on the elephant's trunk. The elephant sneezed and fell on his knees and that was the end of the monk! The monk, the monk, the monk!" :lol I guess that it's politically incorrect to say drunk anymore though because this is the latest version of the song. :rolleyes
