The Irony of Saying "I'm Not a Christian. I'm a Follwer of Christ."

It's some odd new trendy attempt to say that you swim against the stream, but in a Christian way. And here's the Irony:

Yet if any man suffer as a Christian[G5546], let him not be ashamed, but let him glorifie God on this behalfe. 1 Peter 4:16 KJV 1611
Seems the apostles were happy to hold this title!

Χριστιανός: Christianos - G5546

Definition: Christian, Follower of Christ

Cf. Acts 11:26 and Acts 26:28

When I was a kid, one of my favorite cartoons was The Flintstones. The last line of the Flintstones theme song is "We'll have a gay old time." In 1934, Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire starred in a movie called The Gay Divorcee, Which is about a woman who wants a divorce from her husband and puts on an act to get it. People used to speak of gay colors and being in a gay mood. The word "gay" simply means "happy" or "carefree" and there was no shame in using that word. So why are people offended if someone calls them gay?

Excellent point.

What about all the people such as New Agers who say they "follow Christ's teachings". In other words they think Christ went to india and learned hinduism, and then began teaching that enlightenment comes from within. Follower of Christ can hold the same ambiguity.
He didn't???? OK! Who told me that?!?!? Man, Ya can't trust anyone these days.

It's a shame that a perfectly good word has been perverted. The reason homosexuals chose to call themselves gay is because all human beings know deep down inside that homosexuality is an ugly perversion of sexuality, and if you can't face reality, you paper it over with a lie. Sexual perversion is the farthest thing from gaiety.

Coming back to the OP, labels mean little in this day and age. Paul never said "I am a Christian". He simply "Preached Christ, and Him crucified". We are to do the same.

I didn't mean to take the thread off track and talk about homosexuality. My point was that words change. There was a time when behaving like a Christian meant helping other people, being honest and trustworthy, giving to charity and other virtues. Today people associate it with hypocrisy, greed and other less virtuous things. Many believers don't want to be connected with the televangelists and preachers who have given Christianity that image, and so they opt to use another label to describe themselves.
